Great interview with Peter Hain this morning, outlining how Mugabe shifted from being a revered hero of Zimbabwean independence to a murderous despot.

95 - that's some age. I don't know much about him, but it seems he was a very complex and contradictory person. I'm not qualified to say much more at this stage. Post-colonial Africa isn't my specialist subject at all.

Good riddance. Ran his country into the ground for personal gain.

I watched Romesh Ranginathana show in Zimbabwe the other night. It was really interesting to hear their thoughts on the old regime. Mugabe started of well, but when things started to go wrong he became an absolute tyrant.

Got to a position that was beyond him but wouldn't let go. Another in a very long list of people who should never have been leading their country.

I used to work with a lady whose parents were murdered by his regime in Zimbabwe.
There were a lot of "wrongs" committed where in the distant past white people found themselves owning large areas of African land, but those wrongs aren't righted by making further appalling wrongs.
She is a lovely lady, and is one of those people who it was fascinating to scratch the surface of and find out what she'd experienced in her life, including being arrested for political protest in Zimbabwe. She is literally the last person on Earth that you could imagine being arrested - until you hear about her background and it starts to make sense.Last edited by Smartie; 06-09-2019 at 10:28 PM.

When things started to go wrong for him he evicted the white farmers by force and handed over the land to people who didn’t have the skills to run the farms. A managed transition might have saved the economic crash, but by that time all he cared about was political survival. Thousands died to keep him in power.

I wonder if we'll be saying the same things about Boris Johnson in a few decades.

Saw an interview with a guy who was ambassador to Zimbabwe in the 90s and he confirmed what a few have said on here. Mugabe started well and then became a car crash as he handed over the land to the so called 'veterans' in order to cement himself in power.
Of course as in so many of these situations you only have to work out how far to go back to find who was responsible for the likes of Mugabe and as usual its European imperialism and too often British imperialism.

When he first came to power he was compared to Mandela, but he went on to drive what had been a virtually self-sufficient country (known back then as the bread basket of Africa) to its knees, destroying its economy and leaving it forced to rely on food imports. Along the way he killed tens of thousands of his own citizens and perceived opponents. Right up there among the world's most brutal dictators.

A quick summary of his life. Fairly sanitised though.
