I don't know which country boasts the greatest distance east to west, but am tormented by the thought that it would be the widest country in the world east to west, rather than the longest east to west. I feel that in saying this I may be guilty of an unduly Mercatorist world view.

I have never been to South America or spoken to a ladyboy.
Mrs R and I were walking in a street, similar in size to Rose Street, which had been pedestrianised for the weekend. It was very pleasant, but I can't remember in which part of Thailand we were.

There were stalls offering Mojitos and bottles of Singha, Thai street food, and all sorts of arts and crafts. It was very pleasant.

As we walked along we noticed people handing out leaflets, a la Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and we were approached by a stunning beauty. They had clearly spent a considerable amount of time doing their make up, but rather than look cheap and overdone, it was very classy and endearing. Petit and slim, they are still one of the most stunningly beautiful people I've ever met.

We had a brief conversation about their show, where it was and start time, and ascertained it was singing and dancing with some gentle comedy. We took a leaflet and wandered off.

When we eventually stopped at a bar for a drink, I had a closer look at the leaflet, and there, on the front page, was the person who we'd spoken to a few minutes earlier, advertising a glamorous Ladyboy show.

We didn't go to the show, partly because of our own inhibitions, but also because it sort of feels like you're not going to enjoy the entertainment the artists are creating, rather that the artists themselves are the entertainment.

I'm sure that's exactly what the show was about, but it just didn't feel right. Sort of bearded lady in reverse. A "freak show" as they used to be delightfully called.

So I have spoken to a ladyboy, but I've never oggled one, well, not inappropriately, I hope.

I must remember to pack my mirror sunglasses in case I see any in Rio. 😎

I hope we reach some sort of "peak outrage" moment that is like the social media version of the financial crisis of 2007 that sees this need to portray mock outrage at every possible subject crumble before our very eyes.

I've spent time in South America, have friends from there, they are the first ones to take the piss about the stereotypes of SA.
You better apologise for that, mate!

Says on tin- you been there, you think you are anywhere near understanding, comments received, the nonsense on main forum from knuckle draggers is what it is, the personal attacks, the generalisations, on the closed thread, speak for theirselves, the posters are fools coming away with that nonsense, the view of not many people knowing & caring about South America is typical bullying.
I spent 6 months on the Falklands, does that count? I confess to not making the acquaintance of any South Americans during my time there, apparently they left in a hurry before my arrival.

It was weapons grade by the time I left. 6 months on an isolated mountain top left me looking like Grizzly Adams and smelling like his bear Ben. Still wasn't enough to repel Thatcher from paying me a short visit in a helicopter though, think she might actually have liked it.

Another absolute belter of a thread from the Major.

I wonder what the OP's tipple of choice is to inspire these rip snortingly random rants

Thought it was going to be about the Amazon jungle disappearing at a new alarming rate.

Dear lord. Possibly the most amused I've been on here without having a clue what the OP is talking about.

All I could pick out from it was some form ranting about ignorance towards South America (I think?), while ironically referencing Bangkok and ladyboys. To be clear - if you lived and worked in Bangkok for a while (whether as a ladyboy or otherwise) you weren't in South America. Far from it.

Are you major from Fawlty Towers?

I think you'll find that Brazil is about one-hundred kilometers longer north to south.
I found that a couple of times using Google but I’m not convinced those figures included the islands at the southern tip of Chile.

Anyway, Chile has a territorial claim on part of Antarctica so I’m assuming that gives them the victory!!!

Surprisingly Tennents & of that ilk wherever I happen to be in the world at that particular time.

Said all that, knowledge of South America in Europe & particularly Scotland is woeful!

Canada is even longer from north to south than both Chile and Brazil, but when you include Antarctic Territories in the mix the winner is Norway!

I think Mexico may be considered to be North America, albeit at the southern end, but I guess it is relatively moot. Spanish is expected to be the first tongue of the majority of the US population by 2050. The Republicans need to start shifting their policy stances sharpish
