    4.40 minute miles

That's the pace of the male runners in the London marathon today.

Paula Radcliffe said, "Yeah, they've set off quite slowly today."

My good god. Even when I was slim and fit, I couldn't have run one mile at that speed, never mind 26!

    Phenomenal.

And yes, I was once slim and fit!

It never ceases to amaze me the number of people who think that a five minute mile is an easy thing to do --------- and yes ------- even for 1 mile

Watched a bit of this up the gym today during my workout and couldn't believe the fact they were sprinting the last 4-500 yards to the line, jeez after 26 miles and still the energy to sprint probably faster than you or I could sprint without having ran that distance, ****ing amazing athletes.

n.b. You've also got to remember though that these wee guys are 5'4" ish and 7-8 stones dripping wet, compared to us guys.

It really is amazing that they can not only run at such pace, but sustain it for such a prolonged period of time.

I can run 5km (around 3 miles) in 19 minutes, but that is pushing hard. I couldn't sustain that pace for much longer than 25 minutes and I'm a slim guy with long legs.

    Marathon runners are absolute machines.

I used to road run, and used to be very fit. Often doing 25-30 miles a week - on 3 or 4 runs, and I found 6 minute miles a killer. A 4.40 mile is and over distance is an amazing level of fitness and stamina
