Hasta la Vista - Volcanic Stories

I've just seen off a Spanish student who was lodging with us. She was supposed to leave on Sunday, but wasn't able to fly. Her party are now getting a bus to Portsmouth, a ferry to Caen, then bussing it all the way down to Granada - a three day haul.

Anybody else got stories about guests that haven't been able to get away?

Your mate sounds like the kind of guy who wouldn't get wet if he fell overboard.

Talk about a lucky, lucky, ********!

Parents flights from india were cancelled on friday. Next available date they have been given is the 29th. They have 2 flights, so am not sure how it will work.

All in all it will equal about a month i have had with a free house. The downside is making my own dinners, cleaning, doing the washing etc.

My Spanish friends David and Ricardo arrived here on March 28th, stayed with me for a few days then went to the Underwater Centre in Fort William to get their diving certificates which they completed on April 9th.

Ricardo flew home on Sunday 11th, while David stayed on to spend some time with me here in Edinburgh. He was due to fly back to Alicante last Saturday the 14th. He was grounded and Ryanair told him the next available flight is Saturday 24th, which they got him on with no extra charge.

Ryanair are starting to fly again on Friday, but David cannot accommodate the possibility of any more delays, so is now taking the train to Portsmouth tomorrow, an 8 hour journey costing £64.

From there he will take a ferry overnight to Santander, a journey of 25 hours costing £128.

From there he will either take the train to Madrid, where his wife will pick him up and take him home to Murcia, or she will drive the 900km to Santander to pick him up, and then 900km back to Murcia.

There are folk in worse situations than him, for he has been able to live with me and has the funds to make other travel arrangements.

The moral of the tale is, travel broadens the mind but sometimes leaves you up **** creek without a plane...

I was on days off when it kicked off so have been stuck at home twiddling my thumbs and keeping my fingers crossed that the other Volcano wakes up from it's wee snooze.

Got loads of workmates scattered all around Europe having a wee paid holiday.

Stuck in Munich from Saturday to Tuesday. Airline (KLM) not interested. Train at 3am Tuesday from Munich to Cologne, Cologne to Utrecht. Utrecht to Rotterdam. Ferry to Hull, hire car to Edinburgh (robbing bazzas at the railway wanted £85 single - Munich to Rotterdam on German/Dutch railways = £135 single).

Got back to work today. Greeted by employers' website (Edin Uni) informing me that this will cost me three days annual leave. That after spending 36 hours and hundreds of Euros getting back as quick as possible. Nice to know they care.

I'm sure those who are self employed will sympathise with your plight.

Now that would be a very successful University course.
