Its easy. took about 3 weeks for the official documents to come through. The timeconsuming bit is informing everyone (bank, passport, pension, insurance etc)

£33 per name change and that is per incidence, e.g if your name is John Hughes and you want to change it to John Yogi Hughes then that will cost £33. I you want to change it to Sean Yogi O'Hughes then it is still just £33 if you change all the bits at once.

A guy I worked with years back changed his name at least twice, although no-one was ever quite sure why

Incorrect. Of course this company are going to tell you that, so they can get money out of you. When I wanted to change my name, I checked with my solicitor and as previously stated, under Scots Law, you can change your name to whatever you want (within reason). I've changed the majority of things with a declaration includingmy driving licence and bank accounts.

I dont know if this is relevent but I changed my surname when I got married to my wife.didnt have to pay a penny and my driving licence got changed no problem.

Sorry D, I didn't actually mean what they were saying was wrong. They just make it sound like you need a deed poll in Scotland when you don't. Anything to get money out of people IMO.

This requires a deed poll, even in Scotland.

From the Direct Gov site:

The supporting documents
IPS needs to see evidence of all your name changes. You must send original documents, not copies. IPS will accept laminated documents as proof of name changes.

You will need to send:

completed application form
your current or last passport
two recent, identical photographs
and supporting documents as detailed below.
If you are waiting to get married or form a civil partnership
IPS needs form PD2, 'Passports for Newly Weds and Civil Partners'. For information about this form and how to get it, follow the link below.

About name changes and passports If you have already changed your name
IPS will need to see documents showing the date of and reason for the name change.

Haven't done it myself but in one office I worked in there was a Phil Dick, Ronnie Dick and Alec Dick, none of whom were related. Someone phoned up asking for a Mr Dick to be met with the immortal reply "there are a few Dicks in this office, which one are you wanting to speak to?".

One of the Dicks met a lovely girl called Joyce who amazingly didn't want to change her name to Dick when they married so Mr Dick changed his surname to hers. Spoilsport

But that's from the national government website. And for 'national' read . Don't see Scotland mentioned there at all.

I would definitely check with a solicitor first, they will keep you right. Don't see the point in stumping up for a deed poll if you don't need one.
