Strathclyde Police has put in place a major operation to prevent trouble at two opposing demonstrations in Glasgow. The Scottish Defence League (SDL)- an offshoot of the English Defence League - plans to hold an "anti-Islamic' demonstration in the city later.
At the same time, a group called Scotland United is staging a celebration of multiculturalism in Glasgow to oppose the SDL rally.
Scotland United is backed by trade unions, politicians and faith groups.
Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is among the speakers at the Scotland United rally, organised to oppose the views of those involved with the SDL.
It will be followed by a march through the city centre and will culminate in a minute's silence at George Square for victims of racial violence.
Strathclyde Police Assistant Chief Constable Fiona Taylor said the force was "fully prepared" for both events.
"A significant amount of planning and preparation has been undertaken by the force and a detailed policing plan is in place with sufficient resources available to respond to any incidents," she said.
"We would like to reassure members of the public who intend to come into the city on Saturday that our aim is to keep disruption to a minimum. However, we would suggest that people allow extra time for their journey.
"As always, public safety is paramount for the police, and should any event turn out to pose a risk to public safety then we will respond accordingly."
Avoiding confrontation
The time and location of the SDL protest is not yet known.
Organisers and supporters of the Scotland United rally said it would be a peaceful event celebrating Scotland's multiculturalism.
Osama Saeed, of the Scottish Islamic Foundation, said: "For the first time in a generation the far-right are attempting to march in Glasgow.
"What we're seeing is Scottish civil society rising to that challenge.
"It was a challenge but also an opportunity for us to celebrate all that is best about our diversity and multiculturalism and to show, crucially, colleagues in England how to manage this."

surely the police have they call on who gets to have an organised march on any given day. IMHO the SDL should have the right same as any other party to stage a march if following the correct procedures but who the heck authorised both these lot on the same day?
not any great shock if we have a scene similar to that outside Birmingham New Street the other month.

I hope we do have a scene like in Birmingham. May the streets run red with rivers of fascist blood.

From the BBC news website.
"The SDL were dispersed to other parts of the city, police said. There was later a heavy police presence in the Paisley Road area to the south of the city centre"
Now I wonder why they ended up there

Walked out my friends flat earlier behind sauchiehall st to see about 50-100 police barricading the road and about 4 buses full of what was probably these SDL folk (who resemble rangers fans quite strongly
). Not a nice sight to come out to.

What struck me yesterday was that there were three demos taking place: pro Islam, anti-Islam and pro freedom of speech. The first two I can understand, the third lot seem to members of the morally outraged discussed elsewhere on the forum.
Presumably they were there to ensure that should either of these groups be denied their right to demonstrate, that there would be a demonstration. Next week, they are going to demonstrate at a Xmas lights ceremony, just in case someone is or isn't offended.
I hope the lesbian drummers are there

Yesterday was an embarrassment for the SDL. 100 members max, had to be protected by the polis, hardly left a pub all day, then had to get bussed out of the city center. About 100 militant anti-fascists out, around 1500 in the UAF march.
Massive police presence, kept on top of everything very well i must add.
Shame the fash didn't get much of a bash, always next time though, if they have the balls to show up again.

What strikes me is that if your "march" is obviously racist and malicious then why are they even allowed to do it?
I know I know, it's my right to have an opion, it's my right to be say whatever I want. Fair enough, but it surely isn't anyones right to be allowed the "right" to make thier opinion publically known if it's gonny incite racial hatred.
For example, we all more or less have the right to freedom of speech, but in no means does that include using said right to break the law. It does seem like we've tied ourselves in knots with situations such as this but imo if you sit down, take a breath and have a proper think about it, it becomes apparent that nobody has the "right" to break the law, even if that does come about by them excercising thier right to freedom of speech.
That probably doens't make any sense at all to anyone apart from myself, sorry, lacking in creativity today - it is Monday!
