Because he can always be rehabilitated don't you know...

I watched Pierrepoint as recommended by Doddie and I must say that it didn't change my opinion on capital punishment.

We've been over the arguement a few times on here and the same points will be raised again but I think we should have it.

I also understand the arguements from the Pierrepoint story but I think that he found himself in a unique situation where he was propelled into being a mini celebrity. I understand their will be implications for the people who execute.

What's the deal with the American's who carry it out. Do those people often end up traumatised, turning to drink etc?

The sniper guy got what he deserved aswell. Must have been very, very weird attempting to walk around the street in those couple of weeks.

I read this yesterday and found it quite interesting on his wife's views.

There was a drama on the tellybox the other night about the execution of Gary Glitter - basically a reconstruction of the last decade or so of his life up until now, except that when he recently returned to this country he was tried, found guilty and sentenced to death. Didn't appear to be sensationalised in any way, and doesn't seem to have caused a media storm in the way that, for example, puerile phone calls from over-rated and over-paid presenters to retired Catalan waiters does.

I think death penalty is on the way back to the UK.

They'd have to get out of the EU directive they signed before that happened. I'm not sure whether it's the case or not but wouldn't we have to leave the EU in doing so?

    Here we go again.

Frankly I am worried there are so many people around who would get their kicks out of killing another human. Maybe those advocating predictive psychology should trawl internet forums for case studies.

Does it have to be the balls, or is that just to give an added necro-sexual kick to proceedings?

UKIP, BNP, "*******" wing of the Tory Party, rising unemployment, red tape, etc, etc. We still have pounds sterling, feet and inches, etc. Membership of the EU will have seemed a temporary blip when we win the WC in the Dominion of South Africa and rise once more as a proud and independent island. Maybe reintroduce flogging first, as a taster.

I'd have thought dealing with a piece of **** would involve doing something to another part of the anatomy. Not that I'm a sexual pervert myself.

How is it necro-sexual as they would still be alive before the injection

Anyway, I take it you are just being flippant

I retract the statement about his baws if it upsets you and replace it with his arm

That's why I said necro-sexual rather than necrophilic...

Don't retract it on my account, different strokes for different folks an' all that.

I think death penalty is on the way back to the UK.

If it is, it'll be a HUGE public attraction. Especially when the subject's a woman, I'd guess.

Fine if you're sure you've got the right guy. Indefensible if you execute an innocent man (or woman).

Because it is the best thing on offer. Last round the world cruise is a bit less practical.

You MIGHT be granted a stay. Then you could have another last meal later on.

It's about, "Hey we're going to kill you, but there's nothing personal here. And to prove it, what would you like to eat and drink before we strap you on the gurney/into the chair/into the chamber/drop you through the floor with a rope round your neck/chop your head off?"

Sam Pepys had an original vew of execution:

"To my Lord's in the morning, where I met with Capt. Cuttance. But my Lord not being up, I went out to Charing Cross to see Maj.-Gen. Harrison hanged, drawn, and quartered; which was done there, he looking as cheerful as any man could in that condition. He was presently cut down and his head and his heart shown to the people, at which there were great shouts of joy.... Thus it was my chance to see the King beheaded at Whitehall and to see the first blood shed in revenge for the blood of the King at Charing Cross. From thence to my Lord's, and took Capt. Cuttance and Mr. Sheply to the Sun Tavern and did give them some oysters."

Nice to read that the sight of a man being disembowlled and beheaded didn't put him off his grub.

I like the "he looking as cheerful as any man could in that condition...."

Do you think you'd get away with saying you'd like a delivery from the chippy on the other side of the country?

Imagine how pissed off you would be if your last meal arrived burnt.

Now if that mouthwatering prospect wouldn't tempt youngsters away from their TV screens and games consoles, what would?

Yet still people argue against the death penalty!

If we held them as half-time entertainment in football stadiums, the SPL would have no financial worries whatsoever.

The commercial possibilities are endless. Even in the 17th century the hangman had the right to cut the rope up into bits and sell the bits off round the pubs as souvenirs. He also got to keep the client's clothes to sell - Ebay, here we come....

And the fast-food boys did a roaring trade round the gallows. "Sausages, get your lovely sausages! Tripe'n onions, lovely fresh tripe'n onions! Spare ribs...)

Because they didn't use a drop (like the Pierrepoints did) but strung them up, it could take up to an hour for the executee to die.

You could run a sort of 'Banzai' betting game on how long it would take (a bit like Mr Shake hands Man - 20 minutes, half an hour, three quarters of an hour, more than an hour - betting ends now, BANZAI!!!!!!!!!!!!)

That, and selling tickets to the stadium, with all the merchandising - DVDs, T-shirts, soft toys, back-packs etc, all with appropriate logos - I'm surprised Gordo and Darling haven't set it up already.

I trust no one's offended by my modest proposal.
