You could be right, but I’m pretty sure it was being broadcast as a live news event as it was happening, rather than live football.

Thats correct. Im fairly sure they showed the moment when the ref abandoned the game as the match was ongoing, presumably being filmed for a later highlights programme, and then cut to the live scenes.
