I've seen both sided of the argument the last few days and I'd say newsweek and the guardian both have a point. I don't think anyone thinks they will line up all 15,000 that have been imprisoned for protesting and hang them. It's more the fact that the parliament is recommending they get the full punishment which is death. A shocking way to think of your subjects who have a different of opinion. From the reports we're seeing it's certainly not quelling the riots
Well anyone who has not lived under that regime, believe me they didn't think twice about killing 1500 protesters last time. The more the west highlights this the more likely it is they will back down and just imprison these protesters, but given the chance, which they have now been given, they will literally make these poor protesters line up and they will hang them all. They are talking of Talibanesque public trials! They've already sentenced a Kurdish Iranian rapper to death, they are looking to kill a 15 girl who was giving out sweeties out at a protest. The see themselves are the keepers of Islam and correct in gods eyes so killing 15000 people who insult god with their actions is a no brainer for them. My boss is over there at the moment and there is a lot of anger and resentment towards the government (more than usual), this is not going to go away. But the clerics are still in charge and they are, if reports are to be believed, even killing their own security people who refuse to kill civilians. It is a horrible situation that makes me sick to my stomach.
