3/8/2019 Scottish League Premiership Match Day 1

    Hibernian 1 v 0 St Mirren

    Allan 85

Returning hero Scott Allan secured the points on the opening day with a late goal after he latched on to a Christian Doidge reverse pass and waltzed into the box before firing home from 18 yards

Allan had earlier hit the upright with a cute lob but this match is probably best remembered for substitute Doidge failing to convert a couple of gilt edged chances

The good news was he was making the right runs and adopting the correct positions

Hibs Rocky Whittaker Hanlon James Jackson Vela Horgan Newell Mallan Allan and Kamberi

Subs Mackie for James Doidge for Vela Slivka for Horgan

    Att 16600

    3/8/2002 Scottish League SPL

    Hibernian 1 v 2 Aberdeen

    Luna 31

Paco Luna gave HIBS the lead when he latched onto a John O’Neil expertly threaded pass to chip the advancing Kjaer on the half hour

Darren Mackie pulled the Dons level on the hour much to the joy of the 3000 travelling fans jammed into the South

Deep into 10 minutes added injury time Kjaer pulled off a world class save when he expertly clawed away a Tam McManus lob destined for the top faraway corner

Scenes in the 97th minute when Aberdeen broke away and Fergus Tiernan and Darren Young teed up Chris Clark for a tap-in for an undeserved winner

Hibs Caig Orman Smith Dempsie Murray Townsley O’Neil Arpinon Brebner O’Connor and Luna

    Subs Wiss McManus and Whittaker

    Att 13340

    3/8/1997 Scottish League Premier Division

    Hibernian 2 v 1 Celtic

    Power
    Charnley

    https://youtu.be/fk6jG4dunG4

Darren Jackson made his return to Easter Road in a Celtic jersey and Henrik Larsson made his debut for Celtic against Jim Duffy’s new look HIBS side

Lee Power gave HIBS the lead when he got on the end of a Tony Rougier cross into the box Malky Mackay equalised and boyhood Celtic fan Chic Charnley got on the end of Substitute Larsson’s wayward first touch to spectacularly fire home the winner beyond Gordon Marshall from 22 yards

Chic Charnley played the entire match with a smile on his face scoring a goal and striking the upright from 30 yards

Throughout the game he could quite clearly be heard shouting to his teammates ‘ Here, Here’ demanding the ball

The teams left the field at full time with chants of ‘Chico Chico’ ringing in their ears from the East

    What could go wrong ?

Hibs Olly Miller Boco Charnley Hughes Welsh Dow Power Crawford Rougier and McGinlay

    Subs G Miller Tosh

    Att 13000

    3/8/1986 Friendly Challenge Match

    Hibernian 1 v 2 Seville

    Irvine

Hibs warmed up for their opening fixture against Graeme Souness’ new Rangers team with two difficult friendlies the first against Jock Wallace’s Seville side who were too good on the day

The second against Gordon Durie’s Chelsea side who we easily defeated 4-0

Q Can anyone remember the names of the five signings signed in the summer of 1986 signed in preparation for the Rangers game?

The HIBS are Here 1992-99 Ian Colquhoun

    George McCluskey and Billy Kirkwood.

Can't remember the others, which may mean they weren't up to much!
Mature, sensible signature required for responsible position. Good prospects for the right candidate. Apply within.

A meeting held in the Catholic Institute-St Mary’s Halls attached to St Patrick’s Church in the Cowgate led to the formation of Hibernian Football Club on Friday 6th August 1875.

The unlikely pair of gentlemen behind the move were Canon Edward Hannan and Michael Whelahan of The Catholic Young Men’s Society

Both men had been born in Ireland and had moved to Edinburgh and together with thousands of their countrymen and women had set up home in the Old Town of Edinburgh known as ‘Little Ireland’ which took in the Cowgate and its surrounding areas

The ‘establishment’ and local teams were reluctant to accept these Irish incomers so the decision to form their own team for Irish Catholic’s was taken

Hibernian was run by St Patrick’s CYMS as an amateur charitable football club. The charitable work of Hibernian became legendary not only in Edinburgh but throughout Scotland and their influence in spreading the popularity of football is reflected today by two senior Scottish football clubs who owe their existence to Hibernian: Celtic Football Club and Dundee United

Hibs’ centenary Captain and club legend Pat Stanton is a direct descendant of Michael Whelahan the first Captain of Hibernian Football Club

12/8/2017 Scottish League Premiership Match Day 2

    The Rangers 2 v 3 Hibernian

    S Murray
    Tavernier og
    Slivka

Alfredo Morelos headed The Rangers in front after three minutes. Simon Murray equalised with a neat finish cutting in from the left and skipping past Fabio Carduso to steer a low shot past Wes Foderingham.

Ryan Jack was sent off for angrily grabbing Dylan McGeoch and getting involved in a heated exchange with Anthony Stokes right in front of Referee John Beaton. HIBS added to Rangers’ woes when Murray picked out Slivka on the edge of the six yard box the Lithuanian’s attempt on goal appeared to be going past the post before being inadvertently directed into his own goal by Tavernier

Hibs stretched their lead just after the interval when The Rangers defence fell asleep at a throw in allowing Slivka to control the ball on his knee before sending a 20 yard volley beyond Foderingham

Tavernier redeemed himself with nine minutes to go when he pulled a goal back with a header but it was too little too late

    Hibernian 5 v 1 Dundee

    Agathe 2
    Lehmann 2
    Lovell

Dundee took the lead in this game when Georgi Nemsadze cut the ball back to Fabian Caballero who found himself in acres of space to fire a powerful right footer into the bottom corner. The visitors were living up to their prematch billing and were playing brilliant football but were left stunned when Didier Agathe scored a brilliant solo goal collecting the ball in his own half shrugging off a series of challenges as the Dundee defence struggled to match his searing pace and he dispatched a deft flick beyond Dundee goalkeeper Rab Douglas on seeing the whites of the goalkeeper’s eyes.

Hibs missed a goalden chance to take the lead when Douglas brilliantly saved a Russell Latapy penalty kick after Tom Smith was hauled down inside the box. Latapy made up for this misdemeanour when he played a perfectly weighted ball into Agathe’s path who gave HIBS the lead just before half-time

Dundee’s problems increased in stoppage time at the end of the first half when Cabellero was sent off for elbowing Matty Jack after the HIBS enforcer had rattled his bones like a xylophone with a typically robust challenge

Hibs were always comfortable against ten man Dundee in the second half and increased their lead through a double from substitute Dirk Lehmann and a late counter from fellow substitute Stuart Lovell

Dundee had a man sent off in the tunnel after the game

The Harp and shamrocks at the entrances had been given a bright fresh coat of green paint

The wall around the track and crush barriers had been painted white

The pitch had been laid with turf imported from Ireland

The old square posts had been replaced with round ones

Hibs took the lead through two early second half goals from Jim Harte but they took the foot of the gas and allowed Hamilton back into the games

One of the criticisms of McCartney’s early babes was that if anything they were overconfident going into games and it cost them points

Those were the days with that team in 1963. 2 full backs, 1 of whom was a converted midfield player, 1 centre back, 2 creative midfield players, 2 wingers & 3 strikers! Not a holding player in sight!!

    Hibernian 5 v 3 Morton AET

    Allan 20
    Vela 32
    Kamberi 55 104
    Doidge 120

    https://youtu.be/qyUNeDVLJZU

Hibs bounce back from their 1-6 thrashing at Ibrox with a victory against a stuffy Morton side that left more questions than answers

HIBS Maxwell Gray McGregor Hanlon Stevenson Middleton Slivka Vela Horgan Allan and Kamberi

Subs Jackson Whittaker Murray and Doidge

    Att 6500

    17/8/2014 Scottish League Championship

    Hearts 2 v 1 Hibernian

    Al Alagui 92

First blood to Hearts in the three way battle with HIBS and The Rangers for the Championship title and in all honesty HIBS had no one to blame but themselves Captain Liam Craig missing a first half penalty and Scott Robertson 79 getting himself sent off

Hearts converted their penalty and had Sow 88 sent off in a feisty encounter

Hibs Oxley Gray Nelson Stanton Forster Craig Stevenson Handling Robertson Harris and El Alagui

    Subs Kennedy Allan

    Att 17280

    17/8/2003 Scottish League SPL

    Hibernian 1 v 0 Hearts

    O’Connor 90

    https://youtu.be/tVqmZvLHESs

Bobby Williamson secured his first and only Edinburgh Derby win with this victory over Hearts

Hibs had Grant Brebner harshly sent off in 36 minutes and the remainder of the match was a steady procession towards the HIBS goal with Hearts unable to capitalise

The game looked as though it was about to fizzle out when substitute Stephen Dobbie played in fellow sub Garry O’Connor who smashed the ball underneath the diving Tepi Moilanen and into the net at his near post

Cue celebrations and a mini pitch invasion at the Final Whistle

Hibs Andersson Orman Smith Doumbe Zambernardi McManus Wiss Brebner Murray Riordan and Brown

    Subs Dobbie O’Connor and Glass

    Att 14000

    17/8/1996 Scottish League SPL

    Dundee United 0 v 1 Hibernian

    McAllister 27

    https://youtu.be/ZiD4s9-Sn3M

Dave Bowman was sent off after 3 minutes for an elbow on Keith Wright but HIBS still had to work for their victory with the smallest man on the park Kevin McAllister heading the only goal in 27 minutes getting on the end of a Barry Lavety cross

After that it was the Gary McSwegan v Jim Leighton show

HIBS Leighton Miller Dow Millen Welsh Hunter Lavety McAllister Wright Jackson and McGinlay

    Subs Harper Weir

    Att 8600

    17/8/1991 Scottish League Premier Division

17/8/1988 Scottish League Cup Round 2

    Hibernian 4 v 0 Stranraer

    Archibald 2
    Kane
    Evans

Stevie Archibald makes an immediate impact scoring twice on his debut for HIBS

Archibald’s signing had raised eyebrows throughout the land as the Scotland international left Barcelona and chose HIBS over Liverpool as he wanted to play European football

Stevie was indeed a class act able to control the ball immediately with his first touch giving himself time on the ball to weigh up situations more than able to strike the ball accurately with both feet, excellent in the air and expert at maintaining possession in tight situations holding up play and playing others in

In his first season he scored 16 goals from 38 appearances and god knows how many assists

Hibs Goram Hunter Sneddon Orr Rae McIntyre Weir Archibald Kane Collins and Evans

    Subs Tortolano McCluskey

    Att 8170

17/8/1974 Scottish League Cup Group 2

    Hibs 4 v 0 St Johnstone

    Smith 2
    Harper
    Duncan

Hibs put on a superb display of fast attacking passing football where St Johnstone had keeper Derek Robertson to thank for keeping the score down in a game where the ball hardly left the ground

Hibs Supporters Player Of The Year Jim Black would leave the club after this match to rejoin Airdrieonians

Hibs McArthur Brownlie Schaedler Stanton Spalding Blackley Edwards Smith Harper Gordon and Duncan

    Att 11000

17/8/1968 Scottish League Cup Group 1

    Hibernian 2 v 0 Falkirk

    O’Rourke
    Stein

Hibs only had one point from two games so a win was important

Peter Cormack was out injured and his place was taken by Jimmy O’Rourke.

HIBS had the boy wonder young Peter Marinello out on the right wing who taunted and teased the Bairns defence all afternoon

Bob Shankly moved John Blackley back to sweeper and moved Pat Stanton into midfield hoping he would have more of an impact and the move almost paid dividends when he hit the post in the first half with a blistering drive from 25 yards

Hibs took the lead on the hour from an indirect free-kick just outside the box Pat Quinn touched the ball to Jimmy who duly lashed the ball home

The Referee Wilson was not happy and asked for a re-take same move same outcome 1-0 HIBS

Colin Stein settled things a few minutes from the end with his first goal of the season

Hibs Wilson Shevlane Davis Blackley Cousin Stanton Marinello Quinn Stein O’Rourke and Stevenson

10/8/1996 Scottish League Premier Division Match Day 1

    Hibernian 1 v 2 Kilmarnock

    Weir

Alex Miller had to boost his squad and he did so by swapping Gareth Evans and David Farrell for Partick’s Ian Cameron

Brian Welsh and Ian Cameron made their debuts HIBS passed well and created many chances but found Killie goalie Lekovic to be in excellent form

Killie scored a quick 1-2 in five crazy first half minutes through Ally Mitchell and John Henry

Michael Weir replied for HIBS in the second half his last goal for the club

HIBS Leighton Miller Welsh Millen Donald Hunter Weir Cameron Wright Jackson and McGinlay

    Subs McAllister Dow

    Att 8700

10/8/1993 Scottish League Cup Round 2

    Hibernian 2 v 0 Alloa

Billy Lamont’s Alloa put up a good fight but the Hibees had a sting in their tail with goals from Keith Wright and returning forgotten man Graeme Donald

Hibs Leighton Miller Tortolano McIntyre Tweed Hunter McAllister Hamilton Wright Jackson and McGraw

    Sub Donald

HIBS Burridge Miller Mitchell Orr McIntyre MacLeod Weir Hamilton Wright McGraw and McGinlay

    Subs Evans Lennon

    Att 8271

10/8/1985 Scottish League Premier Division Match Day 1

    Aberdeen 3 v 0 Hibernian

Aberdeen unfurled the flag but HIBS played well playing four teenagers Collins Weir Hunter and Kane with a young Gordon Juke Box Durie coming off the bench

Hibs Rough Sneddon Munro Kane Rae Hunter Weir Collins Irvine Cowan and McBride

    Sub Durie

    Att 14857

10/8/1977 Anglo Scottish Cup Preliminaries Leg 1

    Hibernian 2 v 1 Ayr United

    Smith
    Scott

Hibs wore the famous Bukta strip for the first time in this game

HIBS took an early lead when Ayr keeper Hugh Sproat failed to hold a Des Bremner drive and Bobby Smith fired home from close range Big Walker McCall equalised for Ayr but HIBS left it late cult anti-hero Ally Scott firing home a low hard Arthur Duncan cross

HIBS would draw the second leg 2-2 and would reach the Semi Final going out to Peter Cormack’s Bristol City in a bad tempered two legged encounter

Hibs McDonald McNamara Schaedler Brazil Stewart Blackley Duncan Bremner Scott MacLeod and Smith

10/8/1974 Scottish League Cup Group 2

    Hibernian 3 v 1 Rangers

    Gordon
    Duncan
    Harper

A surprisingly easy routine win for HIBS in this League Cup Section game

Rangers had Richard Sharp at centre forward in place of the suspended Derek Parlane

John Blackley and Derek Spalding changing turns to have him in their back pocket

Alan Gordon opened the scoring from his new position in midfield no doubt to accommodate Joe Harper

Ally Scott scored a late consolation for Rangers

Hibs McArthur Brownlie Schaedler Stanton Spalding Blackley Edwards Higgins Harper Gordon and Duncan

    Att 23500

    10/8/1968 Scottish League Cup

10/8/1963 Scottish League Cup Group 2

    St Mirren 1 v 1 Hibernian

    Martin

Neil Martin having opened the scoring had to leave the field with 20 minutes left leaving HIBS down to 10

Kerrigan scored a late late equaliser for the Saints

    Cuthbertson 1 77
    Weir 18 20 35 63
    Aitkenhead 55

    Smith 85

The first post war League game and HIBS run riot on a bright sunny day with Gordon Smith scoring one and having several assists and close calls

    Armstrong 75 for Queens

This was the first game in which HIBS wore numbered shirts

Hibs Kerr Howie Shaw Kean Aird McCabe Smith Cuthbertson Weir Buchanan and Aitkenhead

    Edit:

In the same week Gordon Smith turned down an unofficial approach from Matt Busby to join him at Man Utd the proposed opening bid 40k a record at the time

He turned up at ER with a brand new MG in his favourite colour .....maroon !

Matt Busby played for Hibs during the war so would be aware of Gordon Smith. Would have been a superstar in England. Tom Finney was asked how it felt to be the best winger in the world. His response was that that chap Smith at Hibs might not agree with that. Unfortunately Gordon Smith suffered from the Scotland teams being picked by committee. My father said that Laudrup at Rangers was the nearest thing to Gordon Smith that he had seen.

Gordon Smith : Prince of Wingers by his son Tony Smith is a fantastic read if you get the chance

    The first real superstar

Many’s the time HIBS were offered a blank cheque for Smith

    Rio springs to mind

Spoke to a few Jambo friends of my dad who said when Hearts were playing away they would go to Easter Road to watch Gordon Smith. Dundee and Hearts fans would agree that they won the league due to having him in their side. Only wish had been able to see him in the flesh.
Did the famous five not give Man Utd a hammering.

    7-3 in Gordon Smith’s Testimonial

They never beat Arsenal though but we’ve sorted that now

Was looking at the number of friendlies and the opposition we played in the early to mid fifties makes interesting reading.

Meant to say that I was at the 2-2 game with Arsenal in the mid 50s. In total control until goalie Willie Miller threw two in during the fast 15 minutes.
