    Riordan
    Glass

    11/12/1999 Scottish League SPL

    Hibernian 2 v 2 Motherwell

    Paatelainen
    McGinlay

All the goals came in the second half

Mixu Paatelainen took advantage of hesitation by the Motherwell goalkeeper Stephen Woods after he fumbled a Franck Sauzee shot to give HIBS the lead

John Spencer then pulled one back for Motherwell before Pat McGinlay gave HIBS the lead with an acrobatic overhead kick

That man Spencer again equalised for Motherwell with a well taken individual goal

    11/12/1993 Scottish League Premier Division

    Hibernian 3 v 2 Motherwell

    Wright
    Findlay
    Mitchell

A cracking game at Easter Road

Motherwell dominated the first half missing three decent chances HIBS came more into it but turned round 0-0 at half-time

The second half saw four goals in 13 minutes The first when Keith Wright headed home a Joe Tortolano cross Tommy Coyne then scored a quick fire double for Motherwell. Billy Findlay then equalised for HIBS just one minute after Coyne’s second goal

Motherwell’s Miodrag Krivokapic was then sent off for fouling Keith Wright before the winner came from an unlikely source when Graham Mitchell headed home a Joe Tortolano corner

Hibs Leighton Miller Mitchell Findlay Tweed Hunter Tortolano Hamilton Wright Jackson and O’Neill

    Subs Evans Farrell

    11/12/1971 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 1 v 0 Dundee

    O’Rourke pen

Alex Cropley was brought down in a ‘sandwich ‘ between Bobby Wilson and Dave Johnston in the Dundee box.

There was a brilliant image of the incident on the front page of the programme for the next home match Rangers on Christmas Day wishing all fans a ‘Merry Xmas’ No 14

Jimmy O’Rourke placed his spot kick a foot inside the post whilst Dundee goalkeeper Mike Hewitt dived in the opposite direction

Hibs Herriot Brownlie Schaedler Stanton Black Blackley Edwards McEwan O’Rourke Hazel and Duncan

    Sub: Cropley for Hazel

'before the winner came from an unlikely source when Graham Mitchell headed home a Joe Tortolano corner'

Remember this very well as there was a guy who used to stand near us on the East Terracing that none of my lot really liked as he used to shout utter nonsense regularly (he was a real ar*ehole). This time, he decided that Mitchell was to be the player that he would berate, constantly, throughout the game. Well, when Mitchell scored the winner every one of us made of point of celebrating in his direction and IIRC he was very rarely, if ever, heard from again!

I remember Feyenoord were top of the Dutch League It was a baltic night and they could not handle Jukes’ power and pace He had a sprint coach had worked on his upper body strength and must have laid them both on a plate for Slim Steve Cowan as per

The Juke was on a different level
You just knew Durie would go on to greater things. I remember my mate saying how great Cowan was and I told him to wait and see how great he was when Durie was sold. Top scorer one season and not very many the next.

The Juke Box was the real deal imho

I went to Italia 90 and sat beside this cockney in the Stadio Del Alpi In Turin Scotland v Brazil
This guy kept whining Joook Bax in a high pitched voice wearing a Scotland top
I asked him at half-time what part of Scotland he was from turned out he was a Chelsea fan and even worse English

Was gutted when he signed for Der Hun

Collins low centre of gravity great upper body strength tricky on the ball difficult to get off the ball PMA

Durie power pace left foot right foot good in the air ( scored a hat-trick versus them in the Scottish Cup Final)

If we could have kept all our players over the years you could start another thread with the possibilities

We had a late winner against Dunfermline around that time too (sorry if already covered in an earlier OTDIH). We were just complete rock n roll at that point.

The Motherwell game was a beauty. All the half times were in our favour apart from our own. Second half was a great battle and the full times stayed as they had been 45 minutes earlier. A really good day.

One for the long list of boring tedious matches

Partick Thistle thought they had cancelled us out indeed they had right up until the final minute when the Referee awarded us the softest of soft penalties at the downhill end

Darren Jackson wasted no time in slamming the award high past Craig Nelson on a freeezing miserable day

John Lambie interviewed after the game was short and to the point “ We wuz robbed!”

    Hibernian 2 v 1 Utrecht ( Agg 3-1 )

    G Baker 23
    M Stevenson 48

1-0 up from the first leg HIBS failed to heed the warning when Van Der Linden raced clear of the HIBS defenders who waited on the offside flag but it did not come the Dutch forward drew Ronnie Simpson but to the relief of the poor 5000 crowd he fired past the upright

The Dutch were not to be so profligate with their next raid when they squared the tie on the night.

In 23 minutes Van Der Linden sent over a cross and Geurtsen met it full on with his head to divert it past Simpson

Hibs equalised within two minutes with a brilliant goal. Gerry Baker tamed a pass from Scott slipped it ahead of Westphaal and slammed a wonderful shot from a narrow angle past Van Zoghel

Hibs took the lead on the night and went two goals up on aggregate two minutes into the second half when the ball broke to Morris Stevenson from a Jim Scott corner and he hammered the ball through a forest of legs into the net

The Dutch when they realised the tie was slipping away from them resorted to roughhouse tactics in particular their giant of a centre half Dacserv who played the role of pantomime villain

This game is best remembered for being the debut game of club legend Jimmy O’Rourke who the press described as ‘being the victim of some rough challenges but nothing the Dutch could do could hide the promise of this sturdy youngster He looks to have the lot, sturdy build, speed, brains and abounding confidence’

Jimmy twice went close once with a header that just cleared the crossbar and one shot that whizzed past the post

Jimmy would go on to play for Hibernian for 12 years scoring 122 goals in 325 appearances

13/12/1978 Scottish League Cup Semi Final

    Hibernian 0 v 1 Aberdeen AET

Hibs gave a spirited performance against a very good Aberdeen side at Dens Park and passed up several chances to score in regulation time but were undone when an innocuous looking cross to the back post by Stewart Kennedy two minutes into extra time sailed over goalkeeper Mike McDonald’s head and nestled in the net

IIRC this was the only time I attended Broomfield: and what a dump it was. As befitting an Alex MacDonald team, Airdrie proceeded to kick Hibs up and down the park and, I think, got about 9 players booked! We also got a couple of bookings, including Mickey Weir, who then got booted at the edge of our box and went down. The ref, bizarrely, gave a foul to Airdrie and when they tried to take a quick one it hit the prone Weir in the midriff. The ref then reached for his pocket and we feared that Mickey was about to be sent off, but instead he booked the Airdrie player. Cue bedlam and hysterics amongst the Hibs fans.

I think this may also have been the game where Hibs were trying to do their post-match warmdown on the pitch and MacDonald told them to get off it! What a credit to football that man was!

I assume Des Bremner was playing in central defence, or did Stanton drop back? I remember Bremner as a right back and then as a central midfielder?

The week before at Broomfield Derek Spalding had gone off injured and Des Bremner had dropped back and been outstanding at Centre Back

Ally Macleod came on as a second half sub to take over from Bremner and made his debut in midfield at Airdrie

Derek Spalding was an Unused Sub in the Dumbarton game but maybe not fully recovered

Jim Black had left the club by then

Nice detail Billy. I remember Spalding was a youngster but emigrated, probably at the end of that season. Replaced by Roy Barry who was a veteran by that stage? That was a problem position until George Stewart was signed and would become so again after he left.

    16/12/2018 Scottish League Premiership

    Hibernian 2 v 0 Celtic

    Slivka 1
    Kamberi 59

A brilliant early goal from Slivka in the first minute- he really was the man for the big occasion- followed by a second half strike from Flo Kamberi after a peach of a ball from Mackie sealed the points against the champions In fairness Flo still had a lot to do and it was an exceptional finish high past Craig Gordon

A brilliant game and a fantastic performance played in a carnival atmosphere

Ayr United could not live with us right from the first whistle when Cropley scored.

No team would have lived with us that day

    The Tornadoes were immense

An exhibition match of precision passing football and expert finishing

The Scottish League Cup and Drybrough Cups were on display

Will we ever see their likes again ?

That Celtc game was the first time we'd tried reducing their ticket allocation and the Celtc Fans were half way through a rendition of 'what a s***y home support' when Slivka scored.

Not sure if it was this game or another recent defeat of Celtic ( 2-1) Scott Brown almost halfing Slivka with a late late tackle at the halfway line

Probably the first time I realised Scott Brown was finished

4 dozen years ago since my Uncle took me to my first game. Loads of goals and cup parade, I thought it would be like that every week.

What a game that was Billy!

Am I right in thinking that by around about New Year O'Rourke Gordon & Duncan had scored over 100 goals.

The 100 goals in itself is a huge achievement but I am sure I have read the stat I refer to above before and thought WTF how is that even possible?

To answer your question, the answer is sadly never.

Glorious Glorious days that cemented a young boys love of football in general and Hibs in particular

Despite all the kickings receieved between the and now it has never faded and never will, it has waxed and waned but there are few feelings like a great Hibs win.

I was waiting for this one. My auld man had declined to take me through to Hampden the week before and I was totally gutted. He did take me to this game at Easter Road though. 5 goals to the good by half time, a precursor of things to come a few weeks later.

I have memories of the League Cup being displayed, but wonder if this is mixed up with another game where it went round on top of a lawnmower with a table attached to the front.

Great Gilzean cartoon in the news on the Monday that followed. Talking of which, I would love a compilation of these cartoons. Not sure that they are archived anywhere by the Evening News, but they would make for an awesome trip down memory lane for season 72-73.

I can still picture that day, the smell of cigars in the air, the deluge of goals and the feeling that we were Hibs, the kings of the world.

    Arthur Duncan. 18. 22

    Jimmy O’Rourke. 32 34
