Show QuoteThe taxi tariff has nothing to do with how busy it is, it’s solely based on what the council thinks is appropriate for working at any given time. Most people who work nights will be paid more, and people who work on Christmas Day or New Years Day will be paid extra, that’s exactly how it is in the taxis.

Uber does surge at times but it's cheaper 9 times out of 10 than a taxi. I know a few taxi drivers and they're good honest working people but I do fear it's a trade that will ultimately be squeezed so much Uber it won't be a viable trade for people within a few years.

It doesn't increase regardless of how long it takes or which route is taken.

Only twice in 3 months did it try and send me the wrong way. Down a street near the pleasance that was no exit at the end and the other time was trying to send me up a dirt track to get to mortonhall caravan park.
Sometimes the customer can cause this if they use the exact location instead of filling in the address.

Uber give you an estimate of what the fare will be say between £6.50 - 8.50 all depending on traffic etc.
I had a punter in the taxi one night from Castle St to E Claremont St, came to just under £6.60. He told me he used Uber a couple of times with fare at around £5.50 and the one day he got in one with polish girl driving, fare est. at between £6-7, the route she took was McDonald Rd, Leith Walk, York Pl, the Castle St, traffice due to road works etc was horrendous. After he asked why she was going this way she kept saying she's following the route given to her, he got billed £13 for the fare due to the route she had taken, he complained to Uber and got a refund, he refused to use them again. If the driver has to go a longer route the app works out the distance taken for the job and issues another price, he didn't know that happened.
There's the story from the papers in Dec 2017 when the Uber driver lied to a woman passenger by saying the Forth Br was closed and he had to go via Kincardine Br, the fare she had agreed was suddenly trebled and she was charged £180.
