    from wikipedia...

Herriot is probably best known today for giving his name to the writer James Herriot, a Yorkshirevet whose real name was Alf Wight. Wight needed a pen-name to comply with professional rules banning advertising and chose Jim Herriot's name after seeing him play for Birmingham City in a televised match against Manchester United.

    Sodger.

He was born in Aldershot, where I think his Dad was stationed.

"Crops" was another one, although that might have been when he moved on.

According to a large article in the Evening News December 1972 the nicknames at that time were ...

Jim Herriot: (BOB ) because his team mates say, he has movie star Bob Mitchums' sleepy eyes.
John Brownlie: (ONION) due to the unmanageable hair-style he had on first joining the club.
    Eric Schaedler: (SHADES)
    Pat Stanton: (NIDDRIE)
    Jim Black: (CILLA)
    John Blackley: (SLOOP)
Alex Edwards: (MICKEY) Dunfermline players invented the Mickey Mouse tag.
    Jim O'Rourke: (WEE JIMSIE)
Alan Gordon: (TOSH) After Liverpool's lanky striker John Toshack who like Gordon, is brilliant in the air.
    Alex Cropley: (SODJER)
Arthur Duncan: ( THE FLYER) because of his speed on the wing.

P.S. If anyone is interested the article also mentions which type of car the individual Tornadoes were driving at the time.

Thanks for posting that. The one that surprises me is Arthur Duncans The Flyer, always thought his only nickname was Nijinsky. Sure there must have been a correction at some point.

Most of the Hibs players from that period that I have spoken to always refer to Arthur as ĎFlyerí, but Nijinsky was well used by our fans. Shades was the only one who could get near Arthur in the sprints at training.

Some of the nicknames would have originated in the dressing room or at school/previous club before joining Hibernian.
Arthur was called Flyer by other players.
We fans ,i think ,gave him the name Nijinsky, after the famous racehorse.
Or was it the Russian ballet dancer ;)

    Maybe both !

    Just to add
I have never known Jimmy O'Rourke to be called "wee jimsie"

Awfy West of Scotland type nickname/Rab C. Nesbitt ..ish !

Jimmy was called Coarky by his pals before he joined the club.

Rourky coarky !! Another tag was Stumpy.

We just called him James ;)

O'Rourke surname by the way was very uncommon in East of Scotland back in the day
And difficult for some to pronounce. Or just lazy!!
xample A guy once used to call me King Farouk

He pronounced my surname Arook !!
