Laidlaw was the striker, there was a keeper down there as well and was reported to have signed with Wolves. Don’t remember hearing about him for ages though.

don't really hear much about our youngsters on here nowadays

This was on the Hutchie site today.

As our U18s Prepare to host Hibs U18s in the Scottish Cup the following article might provide some food for thought 🤓📰:

Lots of players have made the journey from Hutchie to Hibs over the years and it led to a lot of football people thinking there was a connection between the two organisations.

Tommy Younger and Willie McFarlane were among the first to sign for Hibs from the club in the late 40s, Younger, the goalkeeper in the famous 5 team, went on to captain Liverpool and Scotland and in later life was the president of the SFA, McFarlane had a reputation as a hard tackling full-back also playing in the famous 5 team he went on to manage Hibs.

In the modern age, Danny Lennon,John Hughes, Gary Caldwell, Jason Cummings, Marc McNulty, Michael Renwick, Steven Tweed, Kevin Harper, John Collins, Kenny Miller, Leigh Griffiths, Alan Combe, Steve Whittaker, Colin Nish, Gary O'Connor ,Darren Dods, Ian Murray, Kevin Thomson, Danny Swanson, Sam Stanton, Michael Stewart, Eddie May, Derek Riordan and Paul Hanlon have all served them well, there are others and although the relationship is not as strong as it once was the odd player still makes that move across the city to Leith, the latest being 17 year old Malik Zaid who came to Scotland from war torn Libya 8 years ago and only moved to Hibs 2 months ago.

In 1996 for 18 months in last year of Alex Millers time and through Jocky Scotts tenure there was a firm connection between the 2 clubs it was during this time that the aforementioned Caldwell, O'Connor, Murray, Miller, Whittaker, Thomson, Riordan all established themselves with and signed for the Easter Road Side others were there too, including the present managers of the Hutchie senior side, Ryan Harding and Fraser Ogilve, the Hutchie sides were actually playing in the purple Hibs strips at this time but the this came abruptly to an end when Jim Duffy took over.

Only a few years later a lot of these players would grace the first team, surely in retrospect ending that tie up was a bad decision as no doubt a steady stream of the talent from Hutchie would have ended up at Hibs, notwithstanding the financial benefits as most of these players were sold on to bigger clubs.

However as the advent of pro youth took over in 2000 clubs like Hutchie were deemed irrelevant by those in the know in football, but the club, somehow keep managing to promote talent into the senior game and doing it their way, only last month Ali McCann was sold for £1.2m from St.Johnstone to Preston North End a kid from Edinburgh at Hutchie since 6 years old and taken on by Saints apparently unwanted by the Edinburgh clubs, there is no doubt that there is still talent outside the pro youth circus and that Hutchie as they have always done continue to manage Football youth Development better than most.
