    Scott Allan

How grim is it that when we needed a bit of magic Scotty had to sit in the stand and watch.

Yes but the SA of 2021 or the SA of 3 or 4 years ago ? Agree though that bench is terrible - we need quality and quantity next year - that doesn`t need to mean signing duds for bench . Can mean Sproule / Boyle types as good subs for example .

Did Scoff Allan not come off the bench in the league cup game and offered nothing?

I hope he digs his heels in and doesn't get moved on in the summer.
Jack can't find a way to use the flair players and probably will want his wage for another steady Eddie, if we have a poor first half of the season I think Jack will be toast and hopefully a replacement will be able to get back using Scott.
Obviously if we have a good start to the season then Jack deserves to stay and if there's no position for Scott then he will go in January but I would hate to see us lose him in the summer and quickly followed by the manager who can't get a tune out of him.

Putting aside what contribution Scott Allan may have made, it’s a valid point about who would you want to come off the bench and make a difference. Bar Murphy, there was nothing. All well and good running with a leaner squad, but it means you can’t afford to have signings like Wright and Magennis.

He did but that was months ago, I would hope his fitness levels would be very different now.

In terms of a game changer at least there would have been the potential for a bit of magic.

If you are desperate for a goal in a big game then I would choose Scott Allan and Stevie Mallan every day of the week over Newall, Irvine, Magennis and Hallberg.

We are one dimensional. We don’t have any guile to break teams down. If we can’t get down the flanks, we’re clueless.

It would have been nice to have a striker to bring on.

Scott Allan had returned from a career threatening illness and went to ICT to try and regain some match fitness. He wasn’t a standout for them. He may never be our level again and as delighted as I am to see him back playing, he may not play for us again. As long as he is able to resume his football career then I’m delighted for him but he wouldn’t have made the difference yesterday.

Mallan went out on loan as he’d been largely ineffective through the season.

That’s what happens when you have 3 strikers all season then send one out on loan.

The point that you’d choose Mallan or Allan may be accurate but it doesn’t mean you’re right.

A half fit Allan or a largely ineffective Mallan are more likely to conjur up a goal out of nothing than those 4 mentioned.

So why haven’t they when they’ve had the chance to?

He did when we were already 3-0 down.

I still think we could have offered him opportunities to get some game time and get up to a level of fitness to contribute.

Not saying he would have been the saviour or anything like that but still think it boils down to JR not having a place for him in this team.

Irvine, Newell, Magennis, Hallberg - 119 collective appearances this season. Total goals - 4.

Mallan - 20 appearances this season.. Total goals - 4.

2 penalties and 2 against a part time side?

Ok lets remove the Magennis goal for being an overhit cross, Irvine's for being an offside tap in, and Hallberg's for being against a championship team.

One decent goal (Newell's) from those midfield four in 119 appearances says it all.

Yeah, they are all still better than Mallan. Except possible Magennis who has undoubtedly been a disappointment.

Mallan scores some goals, but his general play is seriously poor.

Well I know you dislike Mallen and he does have flaws, but football is about scoring goals.

Mallen is not right for every situation.

But if you are in desperate need of a goal against a hard to break down team with less than half an hour to go, Irvine and Newell arent looking like doing anything, and you look to the bench and see Magennis, Hallberg and Mallen, then it's a no brainer.

Because he can produce something out of nothing. You might say he doesnt do that often enough, but its still more than the other 4, no doubt.

Best to reserve judgment on Scott Allan until he’s had a full pre-season...any game time in 2021 has been with him playing catch-up on his fitness.

Mallan and Allan could have made a difference.

Mallan is way too soft a touch to play against St Johnstone. We certainly did miss a bit of creativity in midfield though, as we have all season.
