    Hibs Talismen through the years…

Article in the Hootsman banging on about Boyler being are Talisman and it’s housed to disagree.

I suppose the usage of the words is perhaps open to debate in football terms. But here’s three that spring to mind…

    SJM
    Sauzee
    Darren Jackson

id also add an on form Scotty Allan to that list.

Griffiths that season under Fenlon where he pretty much carried the whole club on his back

spot on he and Jackson respectively carried Hibs for massive parts of seasons when we were up against it.

he’s up at the top vying for number 1. Just the confidence his mere presence gave the team and support - it was a shame he was not fully fit for the final V Celtic - further compounded by Russell’s indiscretion it was a exercise in hope more than expectation.

I'd have to say Leigh Griffiths would be considered a talisman when he played for us. Given how many important goals he scored for us.

One thing we'd all love in this current side is a true out and out talisman.

For me I'd love a Brewster type experienced hold up man who could score goals that had a rapport with the fans. That would help bring on and develop our younger forward players.

We were lucky to have 2 at the same time, Sauzee and Latapy.

I'd include Jim Leighton alongside Darren Jackson. Both stars in a sometimes average team.

My own talisman Chambers Dictionary has the word talisman as "an object indued with magical powers". I can only think of George Best in this regard.

We should sign that guy Christian Doidge, he brings players into the game with good hold up play, and has a better goalscoring record too.

Boyle is more of a talisman than Doidge currently.

So we have at least 2 talismen at the club, how lucky are we to have so many good players at Hibs?

I know this sounds like sacrilege now, given what he did for us and what he has done since leaving. But I wouldn't describe SJM as a talisman. From that period, the talismen for me would have been SDG or Daz. SJM was a hard-working, creative player but never struck me as the epicentre of the team.

Very happy to be told otherwise though - still one of my fav ever players.

Disagree. John McGinn was the man. No surprise he was the one that moved for decent money. He had that belief and drive about him and I think it rubbed off on everyone. I'm sure Grealish even made a comment along those lines when he first moved to Villa. We had other good players at the time but John was class and he was on the rise. The talisman of that team for me. Boyle had come into his own since.

Fair play, and very interesting to hear about Grealish's comments. I think he's only getting better, too!

I remember Scott Allan getting close to talisman levels in Stubbs' first season (14/15). He got lots of assists and was the focal point of almost every forward thinking move. Opposition teams tried to man mark him because he was widely considered our best player. I think that's why Rangers tried so hard to pinch him in the summer of 2015. They saw him as the biggest threat to their promotion.

Boyle is probably the closest thing to one we have now. He's our out ball and sets the tone more often than not.

Wouldn't say Doidge is a talisman just because he holds the ball up and I mentioned that type previously. I was meaning a more experienced tough leader type that scores goals like Brewster or Mixu.

Boyle is the closest we have to a talisman just now.

I was trying to find the quote. It was something bromantic about feeling like you can win when you've got John McGinn playing beside you. It seems to have been lost under all the recent Grealish / McGinn England and Scotland stuff.

Certainly we've had some very good representatives of our club over the last few years. Whether we call them talismen or not.

You mean Craig Brewster who scored the grand total of 3 goals for Hibs?

Jimmy O'Rourke when he used to come on with 2 minutes left, score the winner and walk off with not a spot on his strip while everyone else was splattered. . And just Jimmy O'Rourke in general. When he was on song you could see the opposition wilting as he was unstoppable.
