It was discussed at length at the time (can't remember if it was on the match thread or elsewhere) but the short version is:

He's offside because there is only one Motherwell player between him and the goal line. It caught some people out because the goalkeeper was in an unusual position (further from the goal line than Jackson), and some folk were under the impression that the goalkeeper somehow doesn't count for offside, so the one defender would be playing Jackson on. But that's completely wrong – it's always been two opposing players between you and the goal line to be onside (well, unless you go back before 1925), it's just that obviously 99% of the time one of those players is the goalkeeper.
