Emma Stone’s getting good reviews for her role but they seem to have removed the socialism, feminism and Scottishness from it to appeal to the American gammon market. Pity.

Watched End Of Days the other night. Thought it was quite good. A typical 90s Schwarzenegger action film, so never going to threaten the Oscars, but well done for what it is and a different take on that kind of film. Wife thought it was utter trash though, and she watches mainly utter trash, so concerning I enjoyed it!

Watched it tonight. Had a look at Wikipedia to find out if they were making a sequel as the ending left you hanging.
Having read up on it apparently they didn’t want the stereotypical ending to a disaster movie whereby it all sorts itself out.
I actually enjoyed it and was left feeling I wanted more. They could defo do a sequel.

I caught it half way through one night recently on the movie channels sat and watched it, seen it loads but not for a while, superb film, I don’t think there’s a bad performance in the whole film.

It was actually OK. Emma Stone was good. Mark Ruffallo over acted a bit. The themes had to be pointed out rather obviously in the script for the dumb-ass American audience and it lost something by being moved from Glasgow to London. The steam-punkish stuff works quite well with Alasdair Gray’s narrative and approach.

I haven't read the book, but I though the film was great fun. I read an interview with Alastair Gray's son who said he'd seen it 7 times so far. Apparently the director loved the book, and asked to meet Gray to talk about adapting it a while back. He went to meet him in Glasgow, and Gray gave him his blessing to do whatever he wanted with it. The director is Greek, and he said that he didn't feel confident he'd be able to address the Scottish political themes with the right amount of respect, so he moved it to more recognisable or generic locations, and left aside the specifically Scottish political metaphors.

I thought the socialism and feminism themes you mentioned in your previous post (before you saw it, so maybe you'd have a different impression now), did come through - to the extent that I thought that they were a bit too explicitly asserted. I'd give it a 4, and I'm looking forward to reading the book.

Finally got round to watching Saltburn and tbh I can't really see what all the fuss is about.

It was a bit pedestrian for about 90 minutes then they rushed about 8 years into the last 30. It felt a bit black comedy by numbers to me and the twist was obvious from about an hour in.

On the positive the acting was good, particularly the Catton parents although you would expect that given who was cast.

Saw “The End We Start From” last night.

Excellent movie set in a climate change dystopia but without the usual hysterics and pseudo-politics but a very human story brilliantly acted by Jodie Comer and an excellent supporting cast.

Will make a good TV movie when it come round.

Wasn’t expecting much but was a fairly watchable old school style action movie.

Nyad. Maybe not what you would call a star studded film but gripping. True story about a woman who keeps trying to swim from Cuba to florida. Can't recommend it enough.

Saw "The Holdovers" last weekend. It was really good, standard top performance from Paul Giamatti.

Albeit, it's definitely a Xmas film so probably best to wait to watch in 11 months time. Recommended if you like this slightly old fashioned low key stories and the films of Alexander Payne.
