    Team v St Johnstone

Off the back of a very good February, albeit ending in a disappointing defeat to Motherwell, what team would everyone pick?

St Johnstone will obviously be full of confidence having won the cup last week.

Ross is in the press saying Doig and a couple of others still haven’t trained this week and we could be without 3/4 for the game.

    For me I’d be looking to change the team a bit;

    ..............................Marciano...........

    ..........Porteous.....McGregor.....Hanlon.....

    Cadden..........Gogic............Newell........... Doig..

    ................................Irvine.......

    .......................Boyle............Nisbet....

McGinn has been off the quality he showed earlier in the season for me and Porteous has looked good when being subbed on.

Murphy has offered very little in the last couple of weeks and I think we look a much more solid team with Gogic in there and that will be needed against there midfield.

Nisbet in for Doidge who looks shot of all confidence, I can’t even remember the last game he scored but it must be pushing 15 games.

My only concern about a 352 is I think that will suit St Johnstone as they’ll likely play that too. I think width and doubling up against them out wide could cause them more trouble however I don’t think we will go a 442/451.

    If it was a team with width I’d go;

    ...................................Marciano....... ...........

    McGinn...........McGregor...........Porteous...... Doig

    Cadden.............Irvine..............Gogic...... ........Murphy......

    .............................Boyle...........Nisbe t.....

One defender and you are worried about set pieces?

    So would I.

I note that Sean Rooney went off injured midweek..........so Josh might have more freedom than normal.

Not challenging at set pieces takes away the fear of losing the challenge.

Can Cadden play more of a CM role than a WWB role? If so I'd maybe pop him into a midfield 3 and go 4-3-3.

    Rocky
    McGinn Porteous Hanlon Stevenson
    Irvine Newall Cadden
    Boyle Doidge Nisbet

I’d go with that first lineup as well. Lots of battling quality in the middle of the park but also good quality on the ball too. Doidge can come off the bench and hopefully make a positive impact.

Agree with that. Combats their strengths at set piece plus more competitive in midfield and hopefully better quality going forward.

I think Doidge will start due to his defensive capabilities at set pieces.

due to injuries I think there will be a few changes what they are I don't have a clue

McGinn has been poor his distribution has been awful
    Murphy again not contributing enough
Doige not scoring but his role consists of a lot more than that

I would bring in Gray, Ryan P, and Nisbet

    Dropping out would be
    McGinn Murphy Stevenson

    maricano

    Mcgregor Porteous Hanlon

    Gray Newall Gocic Boyle

    Irvine Nisbet

    Doige

Gray hasn't kicked a ball in months. Would be a disaster.

I understand why people want the 352 set up and the 442 as it gives us 2 up top but they also have flaws. McGinn at RCB has been poor recently and he's not good enough for RWB, so to get the best from him he has to be a normal RB. I'd drop McGinn and go 3412.

    Rocky

    Porteous
    Daz

There was a couple of crosses Macey looked a bit shakey with when he played imo but I appreciate that’s probably down to lack of game time.

A back 3 of Gray, Porteous and Doig gives me the fear though

Whatever team Jack thinks will help us recover from the disappointment of last week. By that I mean the performance not the result.

I like the look of that actually!

Potentially Newall into the middle where Gogic is and either Doig or Murphy out on the left too.
    Mon the Hibs.

I'd have been going with your first team for at least a couple of weeks. Cadden has looked great, Doig has a good engine of the other side and McGinn needs a rest. Doidge and Murphy haven't been playing well imo and need a seat on the bench to ponder that. The team you suggested appears to have balance, width, cover for the central area and drive through the middle. Who knows if it will play out like that but for me that would be my best starting 11 from the available players. Great options from the bench to change a game too with Allan, Murphy and Doidge.

Saints have lost just 2 in 13 - both to the Old Firm.

They have also won the cup and beaten us 3-0 in that run.

I see this as being a really difficult game but really important for us trying to get 3rd.

We weren’t good enough last week - Doig being injured and a few players under performing we can’t allow that again tomorrow.

I would play Doidge for his aerial threat - in the semi final we put in loads of crosses but no one to head. If Rooney plays he has to be nullified as he’s been one of their best players recently - but Conway also been good.

Gogic has to play for me and let Irvine go further forward - Irvine was playing well with Gogic but then Newell came back and we had the wrong balance.

Surely Gray and Doig are defenders and ones both with pace.

Gogic would also provides us cover centrally.
Personally I feel we need a new right back but that's only my opinion.

I don't know which David Gray you are remembering, perhaps the 2016 version, but he is not a pacey defender anymore.

They both play higher up the pitch tho.... neither would be a great choice in a back 3.

I would go with the OP's first team.

Porteous looked fresh when he came on last week and is quicker than anyone else in the back line so for me is a stick on to start.

I would rather have 3 sets of legs in the middle rather than 2 sets with Murphy drifting just behind the strikers so Gogic, Irvine and Newall works for me and up top I think we need to rest Doidge and use more speed and running on the should of defenders that Nisbet and Boyle will provide.

I was at the end of my tether with Doidge at 16:45 last Saturday and crying for him to be dropped.

However as JR pointed out, he’s still getting in the right positions and Perth is where it all changed for him last time and football often has these wee coincidences/ patterns so I’d be inclined to start him this weekend again.

That coupled with the fact that Nisbet hasn’t done anything to stake a claim when he’s came on. I don’t know if it’s the transfer request or losing his dad but he’s not looked like the player we know his is since he missed that penalty against Hearts.

We'll beat them on the counter and to do so we need Nisbet and Boyle up top for speed and movement. Doidge can come on for the last 15 when we are two up and playing hoofball out of defence.
I like the idea of a back three of Porto, Daz and Hanlon which would be our strongest for defending their set piece plays into the box.

Nisbet hasn’t been playing much recently I think if we are to get him back to his best he needs more game time but St Johnstone game isn’t time to start him I don’t think
We need to find a way to stop them getting quality crosses in or defending them better than we did in Semi Final

It is likely Hibs would not have lost to St Johnstone had they dealt with their aerial threat
of Rooney & Kerr at set pieces.
The addition of McGregor & Doidge to Porteous & Nisbet from our semi final team will address that threat.

The above team contains all of our strong, tall, fast and powerful players and should be able to negate their strengths and push them over for 3 points.

I think what’s important to remember is for 35 minutes in that semi we battered them.

Defend and concentrate better at set pieces and we should be ok.
