I struggle with this view seriously. Hounding out a manager that has us in 4th and reaching every single semi final.
Raging about last night, but the manager had a team and system on the park that had us in the position to get to both finals, the players never seized it.
At some point the players on the park need to take over.

Qualifying for Europe is not something we do anywhere near as regularly as we should. Does that not count for anything?
The manager has us in position to qualify for europe and to get to both major finals. There's clearly a wide range of expectations.

For me this lies much more widely with the players no taking the opportunity when everything is in place in the position to do so.
While reaching semi finals is never a bad thing I’m weary about putting too much stock in them when talking about Ross, or anyone, without factoring in the luck of cup draws. Here’s the two cup runs we’ve had under Ross. It could be argued we fell at the first serious hurdles we came up against in both in Hearts & St Johnstone.

Scottish Cup - Dundee Utd (then championship) - BSC - ICT - Hearts
League Cup - Brora, Cove, Dundee, Forfar - Dundee - Alloa - St Johnstone

Also worth pointing out that we looked mince against some of the lower league teams where we did our usual pitty patty play it across the back, hope that mcginn or doig make a run, if not shell it forward tactic........

That’s still 9 games to get through to reach both semis, and regardless of opposition they are good runs. It’s when the stakes become higher, even against lesser opposition where mentally we seem to be unable to play to our best.
The first half hour on Saturday was very good, but the longer we went without converting you saw the confidence evaporate from the team. Once St Johnstone scored with their first attempt on target the mental fragility was there for all to see.

It’s not mental fragility your seeing a lot of these guys have winners medals, what your seeing is a team unsure of there jobs because of this ‘fluid tactical changes’ JR is often praised for in the media, the players are suffering because of the amount of chopping and changing we’re needing to find a set up that has our best players in the positions they play best in, Martin Boyle through the middle for example is not it and neither is he a wing back.

We don't have clever enough players to constantly chop and change, both Rangers and Celtic to an extent play 433 or a variant of that so each player knows their job and are suited to it. One week Boyle is a striker, next a winger and then a wingback, that goes for midfielders like Hallberg who sits deep, on the left, in behind the striker, neither one thing for the other.

Which is part of the reason behind my biggest question for the Manager/Team/Club...

What have we (manager, coaches, players, DOF) learned...?

Just out of interest, how many 'Jack Ross' threads do we actually need?

That’s my point, we can play a 451 for example but tailor the tactics and instructions as it’s needed for the opposing team but at least everyone will know what they’re doing, Jaime Murphy and Martin Boyle must have played 3 different roles on Saturday how’s that beneficial to anyone

It was actually ten. It took us two games to get past Dundee United.

As soon as we met even a half decent side in either competition, we either struggled (United) or were put out (Hearts & St Johnstone).

As I previously said, I'd have given the side more credit if we'd had a decent run up to the Semi-Finals (e.g. actually won ties against Premier sides, or even Hearts), but we pretty much had the luck of the draw.

The clickbait title with the ellipsis is just to distract the Jambos... :) interesting that it has proportionately bigger hit in terms of readership that this longer running thread.

As much as i would like a pretty settled playing style (BACK 3 PLEASE) I'd be really worried if Boyle isnt clever enough to play those positions
