Disagree. We all used to play 442 and no talk of specialists.

You do need players that can do a bit of everything in midfield. Commonly used to be known as central midfielders. We have some of those.

Playing 3 is also fine but you then need to lose something from elsewhere.

We have good wide players so best not to lose one of those and our strikers play better with partners.

Formations are a bit over emphasised by fans. Think today showed that being sharp and quick with the ball and getting stuck in are far more important. They might have had an extra man in midfield but we weren’t being beaten there.
442 used to be the default formation in the 90s, now the default is some variation with 3 in the middle. That’s why playing with a two only works if you have specialist players to mitigate being up against 3. No two midfielders we have, have what is needed to play in a two and it’s setting them up to fail by doing so IMO.

I also think we have more quantity than quality in midfield with most of them being a similar level to Aberdeen’s squad depth. I don’t think any of our central midfielders would get into the Aberdeen starting 11. Newell and Gogic have been improvements but we need to transition them into excellent squad players rather than starters if we’re to take the next step IMO.

Aberdeen's midfield is miles better than ours. Lewis Ferguson would be the best player at the club if we had him, MCrorie is better than Gogic and when fit McGeough would be a starting centre mid for us.

Meant to contribute earlier, I thought Gullan looked really lively when he came on. I’d like to see him coming off the bench a bit more regularly. The boy looks like he’s got something about him.

He's improving, I like that he seems to be able to play anywhere in the final third.

He is pushing for a start imo . I’d put Boyle on the bench and start Hammer.
Bring Boyle on with 20 or so to go .

He is. I think from today’s game him and Sean Mackie only seem to have a weakness in decision making. It’ll be inexperience and probably needing confidence but they both work tremendously hard. One assist from Sean Mackie today and he’s MOM for me. And Gullan injects life each time he’s come off the bench. Very positive about them.

always impressed when he comes on, always so positive and puts defenders under pressure, someone mentioned earlier about lewis in midfield and id be tempeted to try a gogic/newell with gullan in front as a 3

Tbf, 2 defenders and 5 forwards used to be common. Game has evolved. Standard 442 basically never used by decent sides anymore.

This, dropping Boyle might do him and us a bit of good, pace coming off the bench with 20-25 to go.

our 442 has affected Boyle more than most. We have him at his best when we are breaking the lines for him to exploit. In the flat four he almost always gets the ball infront of defence. His pace is his gift, he's technically not the most gifted winger in 1:1 situations. We obv miss Allan for those passes, but Newell etc are more than capable.
