Ukraine News - slight Hibs content

A Ukrainian News Channel did a story this week on the Hasanskaya first ever Dnipro Kids "family" orphanage.

176 family orphanages were created in Dnipro Region. They gift parental love and care to those that have never had them.

In Dnipro region there are now 176 foster family orphanages, and today we visit one of them.

Voylovy’s family is an example of an incredible love for children, and not only for their blood children. Lyudmila is happy to tell about her orphanage children. Every one of them took a place in her soul.

Lyudmila says: Here’s Dima Kotov, our graduate, Seryozha (Sergey) Varakota – he has entered an academy and the state gave him an apartment. Natalya, she is in her last year in technical school, and Tonyechka, also in technical school, graduating [after this year].

Currently the family accommodates ten orphans, while their own children have grown up and live separately now. For the youngsters a study room is arranged: it’s here kids do their homework, play board games and celebrate birthdays.

A boy speaks: sometimes we do English here when the teacher comes.

But there’s a place for the entertainment too – the room next door is packed with toys, computers and Lego. And for little Sofyika (Sofia) there’s nothing more beautiful than her toy house. Sofyika: and here I’ve got some fish (shows the toy fish).

For most active kids father of the family together with older boys have built a play/sports ground and event arranged a small boxing area.

Father says: Kids helped. With painting, cleaning, almost everything. We’ve done it together.

Maryika (Maria) was fostered together with her small brothers Yuri and Timur. 15-year old girl, though not the oldest in the family, says that looking after other kids is her task for she is the most responsible. She says: yet I’m not the oldest by age, but I organise the girls that are older than me, and they in turn take care of the younger children. And if something happens, I’m the first to scold, and then I reproach them sometimes (smiles).

As well as her brothers, the girl is talented in music. Maryika plays violin, while Timur likes sopylka [folk instrument like recorder] and the 12-year old plays it masterfully.

While we get acquainted with children, the housemother lays the table. [Lyudmila says] Here’s borsch, buckwheat, home cutlets, what else? Juice to go. Borsch with sour cream. Lyudmila says that giving parent care for kids who has lost their families isn’t that hard, but it’s not possible without patience and ability to hear others.

Lydmila: They are happy to do everything as long as the adults participate. In the beginning when they come they don’t know how, why they need to do it – they haven’t had done it before.

For 8 years of this famly Volovys raised ten foster children into the grown-ups world. They plan to take another three soon. They are sure, they have enough love and care for more. In total in Dnipropetrovs Oblast (region) there are almost two thousand boys and girls are currently being cared in foster families.

Orphanage father, Yuri, used to be a professional body builder (he’s in his 60’s now believe it or not!) .. so he has always made sure the kids are fit and active.
The play area you see at the end, with the climbing frame and punch bag, had only been built in the last couple of years. Yuri did the majority of the building himself, and Dnipro Kids helped with funding for some of the equipment.

It was the first family orphanage that we took on, and it’s become something of a flagship that other orphanages aspire to.
When I first visited there, nearly 10 years ago, it was a cramped 3 bedroom house. Dnipro Kids has assisted as they converted an attached storage area into an additional girls bedroom, converted the loft to provide 3 more bedrooms, built an external storage area for seasonal clothes storage, built another area for a classroom and study area, and the latest project to build a play area with climbing frame, swings and covered upper area for outside eating and socialising. A truly amazing couple that have made a real difference to the lives of the children they’ve taken in.

To be fair ANY video of me playing football will likely involve me getting roasted

Almost caused a riot on an early Dnipro Kids excursion when we took on local lads in a game of football next to the hostel. Tried to do an overhead kick and accidentally volley’d a local as he tried to head it! Didn’t know the language well enough to apologise and say it was an accident, but luckily the orphanage kids lept to my defence to calm the situation down. They probably told them something along the lines of me being special needs and I didn’t get out very often.
