Well I was responding to a specific claim that he hasn’t influenced a game that was going against us.

For midfielders it’s about key passes per game, passes forward, recovering the ball. In all those metrics Newell is right up there along with likes of Ryan Hedges as the most effective midfielders this year outside the OF.
Especially when played in a midfield two, unless you want Gogic under a whole heap of pressure then he’s not going to be bombing forward constantly and scoring and assisting.

I’m sorry but anyone that doesn’t want Newell here post 2020/21 is away with the fairies in my book. Our most important player, makes us tick and he will have off days, problem is when he’s off it then nobody steps up to the plate. Class act!

I like Newell but i would like to see him put in a big performance in a big game. He is capable of it. Like Gogic i think they are both suffering from the lack of a 3rd midfielder who is full of energy and mobility. Neither are blessed with pace but if we get something today we need Newell to be at it because we wont have a lot of the ball and hes very good at keeping the ball and dictating the tempo of our game.

I’m not saying it isn’t but I replied to your post that said you wanted him to put in a big performance in a big game and I feel he did in that game but was let down by others round about him

Newell has certainly been good this season and an improvement on his form when he first arrived. Has he had some games where he hasn’t been at his best? Yes. Most players will.

Along with the rangers game. The sooner we move to a midfield three the better though, we aren’t dominant enough with the ball to give teams an extra man in the middle of the park and still compete.

The midfield is still not right and if he happened to be the sacrifice then I probably wouldn’t be too upset. I remember Mowbray making a big call with Brebner that worked out for us.

I like Newell though. He has imperfections and is, I think, closer to being part of the midfield solution than the midfield problem. He’s also been much better against stronger teams this season, excellent against a very good Rangers side earlier this season.

We could do with him turning up today.

    I agree.

Think a midfield 3 of Gogic, newell & mallan, Gogic newell & magennis or Gogic newell & Murphy could work

Agree with the first two. Think Magennis is obviously the long term option. While he’s out I’d like to see Mallan, Murphy out on the left as he commits players one on one. 4-2-3-1 with Nisbet up front and Boyle/Murphy either side is the way forward for me. Harsh on Doidge but we aren’t good enough to go two up top against the top sides.
