A wee cracker of a song I love, with a great intro is “Young at Heart” by the Bluebells

Good one. Another great "violiny" intro (although a completely different style) is You Are My World by the Communards.

And not dissimilar to Come on Eileen, with another violiny riff

Sorry must have missed it bigwheel, keep up the good work

You just have some classic soul intros you could add

tbh - I had too - it was when I tried to add it, it told me it was already there :)

I could add quite a few from the soul side..but actually have enjoyed the eclectic variety so far. Great background listening while home working :)

    Come on Eileen intro.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Believ...g_Young_Charms

While we're on Dexy's, the intro to Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven...) is brilliant, especially when the alto sax kicks in. Better than Van Morrison's original simply for the quality of the recording.

I thought Stevie Wonder's Superstition might have got a mention by now.

One I had to dig deep in the memory files for was Robert Plant's Big Log (oo-er Missus?). All I could remember about it was the intro.

The Middle - Jimmy Eat World

Also Feeder have got some crackers, Feeling A Moment maybe the best. Or Seven Days In The Sun.

It’s all subjective but here’s a few that get my foot tapping as soon as I hear the intro.

Johnny Johnson & The Bandwagon - Breaking Down The Walls Of Heartache
    https://youtu.be/_Blyvv9MdjU

One of my favourite songs, Dusty Springfield - Ain’t No Sun Since You’ve Been Gone https://youtu.be/UOcdHBRf0lg

Sure they will have already been mentioned, but Chuck Berry - Rollover Beethoven & Johnny B Goode.

A few other suggestions, based on it being intros.

Europe”The Final Countdown” - cheesemungous but impossible to hear and not dream of being a Scandi bubble-permed astronaut.

Prince “Let’s Go Crazy”. I can already think of a few other shouts when you contemplate his back catalogue.

U2. “Sunday Bloody Sunday”. It is a short intro but so visceral.

Jimi Hendrix - I think “All Along the Watchtower” has been rightly mentioned. “Hey Joe” and “Voodoo Chile” need to be in there too. Hendrix was a fantastic guitarist but his bassist and drummer are probably not given the credit they deserve. The intros to all those tracks are just accomplished, they sound loose but are actually super-tight, musicians on the top of their game working perfectly with each other.

I will slip in a personal favourite or two. I love the intro to “I Believe” by R.E.M., love the whole song TBH, this was just before they became really famous and were still more student-indie than MTV. It was on their album ‘Document’ IIRC, which was followed by ‘Green’ which had ‘Orange Crush’ and other hits and the next album had ‘Losing my Religion’ and they went stratospheric.

And in a complete change of tack, the intros of ‘Chime’ and ‘Belfast’ by Orbital. Hearing the opening notes of either of those takes me to a happy place

Those were my two choices, but if you've not heard it I'll give you 'Los Conquistadores Chocolates' by Johnny Hammond from his 'Gears' album. https://youtu.be/oDUfOORmUtw

Some great choices, could I add ‘Union City Blue’ by Blondie. Great rumbling bass to start with, leading into crashing guitars before Debbie starts singing.

I could name many songs by The Church, but ‘Reptile’ has a great guitar intro from Marty-Willson Piper from the most underrated band of the last 40 years.

There's a YouTube series on the best guitar/bass/piano etc intros of all time. It's a bit heavy on "rawk" IMO, but it's good fun.

That guy does great break downs on why certain songs are so good, goes into the way they are recorded and the instruments etc, it's fascinating to see someone who knows what they are talking about go into it all
