    New squad number

I say number rather than numbers because that's it - Porteous will wear #5 according to the official Twitter.

Looking at the squad list, all the top numbers are assigned bar #3, #19 and #21 so guessing everyone else will be as they were and new signings will fill the gaps. #12 is also free but we haven't used that in years.

Nisbet 15, Gogic 13 which I believe they've both worn previously in their careers.

Drey Wright was training in number 8 too.

A winger wearing 8 just isnae right

Then again we technically had a striker wearing 1 not so long ago

Not that I think it actually matters in the slightest, but the pedant in me completely agrees.

Wright should be 17, but that's Tom James' number - a right back! 😵

I had a lot of love for Riordan wearing the 01 shirt. I was a 12 year old getting to see one of his favourite players return and it just added an extra touch to see something so unusual accompanying it.

Riordan was like a dyslexic no 10. He even liked scoring with his wrong foot. Warped genius.

When I was at school I played left mid (of a 4-3-3) and wore 8. The “Manager” (a players Dad) numbered his team from 1-11 from GK (obvs) through the back 4 from right to left i.e. RB 2, CH’s 3 & 4 and the LB 5. Then he done the same with the 3 in midfield so RM was 6, CM 7 and LM (Me) 8. And then, not surprisingly he had the front 3 numbered 9, 10 and 11 from right to left again. I hated it every single time I played and still feel strongly enough to post about it now😂.
P.S. he was a Hearts fan so might explain the unfootball like numbering convention.

    How imaginative of him lol...

I’m my day, before we started getting squad numbers, the team was numbered as follows:-

    GK 3
    RB 2
    LB 3
    CB 4 & 5
    RM 7
    LM 11
    CM 6 & 8
    FW 9 & 10

I think most teams/players still adhere to this format even with squad numbers... but the Americanism of squad numbers has crept in majorly in the last couple decades... I think Beckham’s 23 (following Michael Jordan) is one of the biggest catalysts for this.

But of course those traditional numbers originate in the same 'start at the back and number right to left' approach, applied to the old 2-3-5 formation:

    GK..............................1
    Full backs................2.......3
    Half backs............4......5......6
    Forwards........7.....8.....9....10....11

Becks was always 7 until he went to Real and Raul had 7.

23 was a nod to Jordan. It annoyed me as it’s my Birthday and I like 23 as a number.

Not that I ever had a choice playing rugby in my youth. Those numbers are locked in.

I switched between 1 & 3 (loosehead and tighthead prop).

sounds like he was a rugby person/hearts fan based somewhere in the west of the city or midlothian.

Going by the squad list on the official site Fraser Murray has #12 and Jamie Gullan #19

Other than Whittaker it seems like #3 has laid dormant for a while, or am I missing someone else?

  16. #16
    Liam Henderson wore 3?

Don’t think Grant is going anywhere, just a change of role. Don’t believe everything you read in the papers.

    Fraser Murray #12 ?

I thought #12 had been reserved for the fans but maybe I dreamt that ?

Numbers don't mean a lot nowadays, Stevenson has been 16 nearly all his career, Allan took 23, Daz 24 because Hanlon already had 4.

23 is a popular number because of Michael Jordan I believe.

Daz has been number 24 for a long while as that's the age he turned pro IIRC.

    Didn't realise hat about Daz.

Noticed on the website that Makel, Combe and Nish are all still there and Stirling has been added to the 1st team squad.

Just watched Ryan Porteous on Sky via twitter. He is taking 25 as he doesn’t think he has ‘earned’ the right to wear 5 yet.
