    USSR v Scotland - 82 WC

On BBC Scotland channel now, presume will be available on bbc iplayer.

Another glorious failure, but great nostalgia for me - was there with my dad & uncle, incredible experience despite the result.

From memory, we were the better side? Hansen and Miller making a bit of a mess of it, unbelievable given they were amongst the best central defenders in European football at the time.

It must have been cracking to be in Spain. Great memories.

I remember feeling very very ill when that happened.
'74 it was playing a well past it Dennis Law against Zaire to give him a game at the World Cup and going out on goal difference, partially as a result.
'78 was missing a penalty against Peru, drawing against Iran with Rough beaten at his near post and not playing Souness until the last game.
'82 Hansen and Miller running into each other. Dagger to the heart moment.

Dennis Law, now 80, was all but finished by 1972 probably as a result of cortisone injections to allow him to play after a bad injury to his right knee in the mid 60's and the Zaire game was a sad end to a Scotland career for a once great player.

Just into the 2nd half now, and first time I've watched it again since that night in Malaga. Had forgotten how good Scotland were - played them off the park, but just couldn't go 2 nil up which would have settled it.

I was 10 years old at the time. One of the greatest experiences of my life - Torremolinos and Benalmadena were teeming with radge Scotsmen!

That Hansen/Miller moment is up there with the most infamous Scottish sporting calamities.

I can't help but think another WC in southern Europe would be something to get excited about. It's probably not feasible for one country to host an expanded tournament going forward. I believe Greece are planning a bid with Bulgaria and a couple of others though. Spain and Portugal as a joint bid would be good.

Definitely; a joint Spain & Portugal tournament would be fantastic.

It's the first time I've seen any footage too, with having been at the game. Two poorly conceded goals put paid to all the good work that we'd put into the game.

We had a great squad and deserved better than we got from the game and the tournament as a whole but sadly it wasn't to be 😕 That fortnight in 82 is still one of the best football experiences I've ever had.

As a fitba-daft kid, it provided a magic which has never been repeated. I don't know how old you were, but can imagine that it would've been fantastic as an adult for various reasons!

I was 19 at the time so it was fantastic for me in many ways, so many memories of a fantastic trip, it's just a pity it never worked out for us on the pitch.

Agreed. It was scary watching that game again for the first time since the day. We had very good players back then but what is really noticeable is how we played. We were so aggressive and in their faces all game, when we didn't have the ball.

Over the decades the national team as well as losing quality has lost their mojo. Hopefully we will get it back at some point.

It was a travesty not winning that game. Still feels sore today.

Ah Benalmedena. 21 years old , great memories . We stayed in the SAN Fermin hotel which had a pub next to it, called the Tartan Tammy. The owners were from Kilmarnock. They made an absolute fortune over that 2 week period. We went back the following January and they took us to the new house they built with the proceeds from that fortnight 😀

Ha ha, that's brilliant! I've been back to Torremolinos and Benalmedena a few times since my son was born, and still feel a bit nostalgic when I 'go for a walk' on my tod. Have to say, I love both resorts and plan to go back next year when hopefully our holidays abroad are back up and running.

Our party used Snoopys and Copa Cabana in Torremolinos - they have since disappeared.

Spain is exactly the sort of country where World Cup finals tournaments should be held. Qatar! Don't get me started.

When was the last time Scotland might have been considered for hosts? The 50s and 60s maybe - although that would have needed an SFA with vision and ambition, so that wasn't happening. Possibly the 70s at a push when we would just about have had enough stadiums, although we would have needed massive government investment to upgrade them (including Easter Road and Hampden) and there just wouldn't have been the appetite for that.

Our stadiums are not too bad these days, but too few of them and too small for a WC. If we got into bed with Wales and Ireland - maybe.

Snoopy's that rings a bell! Not been back to Torremolinos since 1982. Would like to go once all this is over.

Don’t think it’s there now unfortunately
Loads of pubs just down from San Fermin, closed over the last 5/6 years

Mad to think we fancied our chances against the whole USSR but we'd be wary of a Baltic state these days!

    See also: Yugoslavia.

No, I meant that we weren't scared of Yugoslavia, when nowadays I'm not sure I'd trust us against Macedonia, let alone Croatia!

Think that was more about ignorance on our part.
Nae internet, Sky sports etc so Scottish folk hadn't seen them play so just made the ignorant assumption that they must be rubbish compared to the great Scotland. Same thing happened with Peru in '78.

Am I right in thinking that Argentina agreed a ceasefire on the Falklands that night?

Martin Tyler commentating pointing out that the majority of the USSR side made up of Ukranians & Georgians, and to call them Russian would be like referring to a Scotsman as an Englishman!

They were a very good side, but Scotland were better. We just blew it; losing 2 daft goals against New Zealand in the opening game was (is!) typically Scottish.

The NZ result was a mini Iran. Even more Scottish to be put out due to goals conceded against a non-footballing country that we helped to create!

Aye, 3-0 up at half-time v NZ and coasting; then the usual defensive calamities appeared!

Naw, the NZ result was a mini Zaire i.e. not enough goal difference against the minnows. Iran was worse and different as we didn't win.

Yes, you're right. Got 78 on my mind after the NL game last night!

Scotland had 3 good penalty shots, including right at the end. The ref played less than 20 SECONDS INJURY TIME!! Very dodgy refereeing...

Just watched in on the iplayer. First time I’ve seen the game since I watched it live in the boozer as a 17 year old. What a squad we had back then. Not sure why Stein persisted with Robertson on the right for most of the game though.
