    Scotland v Netherlands 1978 World Cup

    Classic Scotland game from 1978 World cup. Amazing to think we were one of the 'favourites' going into the competition.

    I don’t think we were favourites going into the Holland game but we thought we were going to roll over Peru and Iran. We had a good team but totally underestimated the opposition in the first two games.

    Holland had the offside trap down to a fine art every time a Scotsman crossed the half way line Offside! Every time a Scotsman tackled them they expected a foul to be awarded in their favour but luckily the Ref waved play on
    Still no a bad side reached the final IIRC

    Sorry, I meant 'favourites' going into the tournament not the game. I recall one radio article saying that we were third favourites.

    Watching that last night was a good argument for the subsequent amendment of the offside rule so that only players interfering with play count as offside.

    Scotland were the only team to beat Holland in 90 minutes in that tournament. Holland lost in extra time in the final.
