Thread: Song Version

    Song Version

Just been listening to Get It On and Kirsty McColl singing New England came on. Cracking song but prefer Billy Bragg version.

Valerie is another of those songs that I preferred The Zutons original.

Any one have a preference on which version of other songs?

I always had a soft spot for Chantal Kreviazuk's "leaving on a jet plane", relatively unknown artist with absolutely haunting melody.

Born in the USA by Ballboy is way better than the Boss.
There is no such thing as too much yarn, just not enough time.

I heard this for the first time last night and thought it worked really well

The Manhattans - Hurt instead of Timmi Yuro, although both versions are quality.

Neko Case does a really good version of Sparks' classic Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth.

And I love Jon Auer's version of Madonna's Beautiful Stranger

Martin Gore also does a good version of the sparks song you mentioned.

A couple that immediately spring to mind for me are:

Nirvana's version of the The Man Who Sold The World. I probably associate that with them more than Bowie now.

Ryan Adams and Wonderwall. He took a modern day classic and put his own stamp in it. His voice is incredible and it's just hauntingly brilliant. I'd listen to that version over the original if I could only pick one.

One for the oldies, but Linda Ronstadt was always the cover-queen for me.

She introduced me to so many songs, singers and songwriters, and made me re-evaluate songs and songwriters I had dismissed.

Prefer Tom Jones doing Kiss although I feel I shouldn't.

Hendrix's All along the watchtower is much better than Bob Dylan's. In fact, love his songs but I really can't take to Dylan's voice much at all.

Pretty much anyone who's covered Hallelujah sounds better than Leonard Cohen.

    Another couple from me:

The White Stripes cover of I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself.

The original version of Tainted alive by Gloria Jones.
PM Awards General Poster of The Year 2015, 2016, 2017. Probably robbed in other years

Joe Cocker's version of "With a Little Help From My Friends" worked quite well ...
Pretenders did ok with "Stop Your Sobbing" ...
Gary Jules (?) Mad World - that was decent ...

She did a great version of Elvis Costello's Party Girl.

Talking of Elvis, Dave Edmunds' version of Girl Talk was for me his finest hour but probably doesn't count as Elvis didn't actually record it himself till 2 years later!

That was the song which immediately came to my mind also. I think Rufus Wainwright's voice best suits my interpretation of its meaning.

    ‘For The Good Times’

It was written by Kris Kristofferson and a number of country artists, including KK, released it.

Then (the Reverend) Al Green took it on, turned it into a soul track and a thing of sheer beauty.

Miles Davis - ‘Sketches of Spain’

He takes a large section of Rodrigo’s ‘Concierto de Aranjuez’, a concerto for classical guitar and adapts it for trumpet (actually a flugelhorn, which is pretty much a trumpet!).

The original piece is good, albeit melancholy. Davis’s revision turns it into something more ethereal and free-form.

Sound of silence is much better in the Disturbed version

its not really a cover per say, but Myles Kennedy doing Sweet Child Of Mine is much better than Axl Rose/Guns n Roses

Elton John doing Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds is excellent

Elvis hated her doing his songs. She also covered Alison.

Fast forward to a few years ago, and Elvis publicly declared that he was wrong all those years ago, and how wonderful a singer she actually was.

    Another jazz adaptation.

The Rodgers and Hammerstein song ‘My Favourite Things’ from the musical ‘The Sound Of Music’.

John Coltrane, the legendary jazz saxophonist translated it for the sax and recorded a version. It changes the music from something rather twee ( though perfect for the musical), into this jaunty number that sounds positive despite the use of a minor key. One of his best-known and best-loved works I would suggest.

As much as I love John Hiatt, Jeff Healey's version of "Angel eyes" is better.

I think I prefer John Cale because it needs a "been round the block a bit" voice. As opposed to Cohen himself, who had a "just run an ultra marathon and about to expire" voice.
