Reported as a slight knock. I wonder if he would have travelled if the game was in the balance.

Saw him for Juve at Easter Road

Came on as a sub totally outstanding

The first time my young green tinted eyes ever noticed an opposition player

    (Billy Bremner was the other)

Rapid for a 36 year old and could finish

    Edit:

My first HIBS game was Leeds home 1968

George Best’s much awaited home debut that attracted an unprecedented 20622 fans to witness relegation haunted HIBS’ fight for Premier League survival against Bertie Auld’s highly defensive Partick Thistle

The game itself was not one for the purists HIBS took the lead thanks to the promptings of Best to record their first victory in 14 weeks when Ralph Callachan was tripped inside the box and Ally MacLeod duly converted the penalty Hibs increased their lead when an Ally MacLeod shot was deflected past Alan Rough by Brian Whittaker

Hibs were cheered off the pitch at half-time. George had been in fine form showing delightful touches on the ball testing Thistle goalkeeper Rough with a long range free-kick and one 50 yard pass to Tony Higgins can only be described as top drawer

In the second half Thistle came out of their defensive shell and really stepped up the pressure Jim McArthur saved a penalty from McAdam Alex O’Hara pulled a goal back with 19 minutes still to go and the genuine HIBS fans in the large crowd started to bite their finger nails

A masterclass performance by HIBS’ Player of the Year Jackie McNamara kept the Jags at bay as he superbly marshalled the defence and HIBS managed to hold out to claim the valuable two points

HIBS would be relegated in this season for the first time since 1931

Hibs found themselves down 2-4 early in the second half struggling and James McLean had to leave the field through injury leaving HIBS down to 10 men

This was to act as the catalyst for a fight back as Arthur Milne added a double to Willie Rice’s earlier goal direct from a free kick and a goal from Tommy McIntyre to level the score at 4-4

Sadly their efforts were not to yield the point they so richly deserved as Murphy of Celtic scored past Jimmy Kerr in the last minute

That was the game that a couple of people posted on here that it was about time Hibs started playing in that manner for a whole game, instead of just one half at a time.

I think I would easily have accepted that performance and result if we'd repeated it yesterday.... even if we were poor / dull / overly-cautious in the first half.

    Hibernian 1 v 2 Gornik Zabrze

HIBS took on Polish cracks Gornik at Easter Road due to a gap in the fixture list

Gornik were a decent side they were top of their League and had defeated Rangers 3-1 at Ibrox day’s earlier

Their side included future Polish World Cup stars Lubanski, Olek and Gorgon

The game is probably best remembered for Erich Schaedler making his debut as a half-time sub for Johnny Hamilton clattering into midfield general Peter Cormack with a typically robust high octane tackle at 100mph resulting in the #10 being carried off on a stretcher

This incident happened within minutes of Schaedler coming on and Cormack escaped with a badly bruised leg

Erich Schaedler (Shades) went on to become a Hibernian legend spending two spells at the club playing 434 games scoring 5 goals winning a Scottish League Cup being capped by Scotland and only being sent off the once

    8/12/1877 Scottish Cup Round 4

    Thornliebank 1 v 2 Hibernian

Hibernian won this game in Pollockshaws but the home team put in a protest on the grounds that they had scored a perfectly good goal that the Referee had deemed to be offside

The SFA upheld their appeal and a replay was ordered

Hibernian were furious because they had previously lost an appeal themselves being told at the time that the Referee’s decision is always final

There was a bitter feeling that the SFA’s decision had been motivated by anti-Irish prejudice but Father Hannan calmed things down and told his players to prepare for the replay

The match was replayed on 8th December near Lady Road and the game finished 2-2

The SFA had previously ruled that in the event of a draw both teams would progress to the next round

    May

Hibs took advantage of their undersoil heating and a gap in the fixture list by defeating Dutch League second placed side Feyenoord 4-2 at Easter Road

Gordon Durie was in lively form and Dutch defender Troost had to leave the field of play after only two minutes following a robust challenge between the two

On 11 minutes Durie tested Hiele with a fine shot from the edge of the box before being pulled down inside the box by the goalkeeper two minutes later

    Paul Kane converted the penalty

Stevie Cowan then latched onto a short passback from Rietbroek to put Hibs two up

On 21 minutes Alan Rough parried a cross from Tahamata but before he could gather the ball Ralph Callachan cleared the loose ball off Gordon Hunter and they could only watch as the ball sailed into the empty net

Callachan made up for his gaffe by setting up Cowan for a tap-in just after half-time to restore Hibs’ two goal lead

Second half substitute Johnny Rep beat Roughie at his near post with 20 minutes remaining from a tight angle to reduce Hibs’ advantage to repeat his performance in Argentina

Eddie May converted a Colin Harris cross in the last minute to make the final score 4-2

Alan Sneddon and Iain Munro picked up bad knocks and Gordon Durie came down with flu the following day

Hibs would lose their Saturday fixture away to Aberdeen 0-4 with Gordon Durie getting sent off

John Spencer then pulled one back for Motherwell before Pat McGinlay gave HIBS the lead with an acrobatic overhead kick

That man Spencer again equalised for Motherwell with a well taken individual goal

The Aberdeen and 93 Motherwell games were magic. Two that I always remember. There was a Dunfermline match around the same time as the Aberdeen one that was equally enjoyable.

Would have been at the 99 Well game too, but cannae mind that one.

One for the long list of boring tedious matches

Partick Thistle thought they had cancelled us out indeed they had right up until the final minute when the Referee awarded us the softest of soft penalties at the downhill end

Darren Jackson wasted no time in slamming the award high past Craig Nelson on a freeezing miserable day

1-0 up from the first leg HIBS failed to heed the warning when Van Der Linden raced clear of the HIBS defenders who waited on the offside flag but it did not come the Dutch forward drew Ronnie Simpson but to the relief of the poor 5000 crowd he fired past the upright

The Dutch were not to be so profligate with their next raid when they squared the tie on the night.

In 23 minutes Van Der Linden sent over a cross and Geurtsen met it full on with his head to divert it past Simpson

Hibs equalised within two minutes with a brilliant goal. Gerry Baker tamed a pass from Scott slipped it ahead of Westphaal and slammed a wonderful shot from a narrow angle past Van Zoghel

Hibs took the lead on the night and went two goals up on aggregate two minutes into the second half when the ball broke to Morris Stevenson from a Jim Scott corner and he hammered the ball through a forest of legs into the net

The Dutch when they realised the tie was slipping away from them resorted to roughhouse tactics in particular their giant of a centre half Dacserv who played the role of pantomime villain

This game is best remembered for being the debut game of club legend Jimmy O’Rourke who the press described as ‘being the victim of some rough challenges but nothing the Dutch could do could hide the promise of this sturdy youngster He looks to have the lot, sturdy build, speed, brains and abounding confidence’

Jimmy twice went close once with a header that just cleared the crossbar and one shot that whizzed past the post

Jimmy would go on to play for Hibernian for 12 years scoring 122 goals in 325 appearances
