Always thought Stevie Cowan was never the same player once Bobby Thompson was suspended and his purple patch stopped then.

    Maybe talking pish though!
He got injured at the start of his second season iirc.

Bobby Thomson and Stevie Cowan never played in the same team

Cowan’s run came to an end when Gordon Juke Box Durie was sold to Chelsea for 325k in May ‘86

As another poster pointed out Jukebox was a fantastic player whose power and pace laid on a lot of goals for Cowan

Stevie Cowan also returned the favour by using his physical presence to create space for the Jukebox in the box

Gordon Chisholm is probably the closest that side had to a Bobby Thomson type player

Shows how the memory plays tricks. Am I thinking of Willie Irvine then?

Willie Irvine #1 only played in the same team as Stevie Cowan four times

Willie Irvine #2 only scored twice in 15 appearances and was moved on

Stevie Cowan only scored 4 goals for HIBS in 1986/87

He was transferred to Motherwell where he scored 11 : 51

His best spell coming at Portadown 66: 87 winning two Championships and scored the winning goal in the Irish Cup Final

    Now that WAS a team

Irvine socks around the ankles shirt outside the shorts pace to burn

Tommo elbowing everyone out the way including Officials

Bobby Thomson was a lot more skillful than he looked imho

Decent try though? Thought Steve Cowan would do the same the following season but from memory did he not score hardly any goals. Juke Box was some player though
Durie was laying them on a plate for Cowan. I told my mate that Cowan would be lucky to get into double figures without that service.

When Durie left Cowan was never as effective again. Stevie Cowan wasn’t exactly an athlete, but he was a good finisher. His partnership with George McCluskey was a bit less dynamic. Cowan took pelters from fans at time too.

    George Best RIP

    22-5-1946 - 25-11-2005

    25/11/1972 Scottish League Division One

    Arbroath 2 v 3 Hibernian

    Gordon 2
    Duncan

Arbroath entertained HIBS on a cold and blustery evening at Gayfield

Newly promoted Arbroath were decent and a tough nut to crack scoring twice through Billy Pirie

HIBS replied through Alan Gordon 2 and Arthur Duncan who latched onto a superb defence splitting pass from Alex Cropley

Bobby Smith made his debut as a second half substitute

    McBride pen 85

Manager of the Month Willie MacFarlane’s new exciting HIBS team was starting to catch the public’s imagination as 18761 fans turned out for this Tuesday night fixture versus Dunfermline.

Johnny Graham notched a double that took him up to 19 for the season (15 for Falkirk)

He was also pulled down in the box by Doug Baillie for the penalty that was converted by Joe McBride

The Referee turned down two blatant penalty claims before awarding HIBS a penalty on 34 minutes Eddie Turnbull sending keeper Main the wrong way The impressive Bobby Johnstone added a header before half-time Lawrence Reilly made it three after the restart before Eddie Turnbull added a brace the second coming from the penalty spot

HIBS would be runaway League Champions in this season

    25/11/1899 Scottish League Division One

    Hearts 1 v 3 Hibernian

    Hamilton Handling 3 ( 1 pen )

HIBS visited Tynecastle with Hearts sitting proudly at the top of the League They weren’t there at the end of the game as HIBS ran out victors by 3 goals to 1 a margin that might have been more if it wasn’t for Hearts’ custodian future HIBS legend Harry Rennie

Hearts tried to out muscle their rivals and indeed took an early lead This did not deter this excellent HIBS side who responded with a hat-trick from the wonderfully named Hamilton Handling to complete the League double over their Edinburgh rivals

Hibs would finish third in this season ahead of Hearts

That match was a League double over Hearts the first game being a 1-0 victory at Easter Road on 25th October the goal scorer being that man Hamilton Handling

A second goal was disallowed as Hibernian took command

We are told that Hearts’ anxiety led to incidents of the ungentlemanly type which scarcely reflected to their credit five Hibernians being crippled

It was however a most welcome victory the Hibernian players were congratulated on all hands while the cheering was loud and long

Exhibee Alex Wright pulled one back for the Jags after the interval

A penalty goal by Eddie Turnbull twenty minutes from the end ended all doubts about HIBS’ entry into the semifinals of the European Champions Cup.

Willie Ormond was on his way up through the middle when he was unceremoniously brought down by Edlund and Ollson

Hibs should have won this game more convincingly but brilliant goalkeeping by Arvidsson kept them out pulling off fantastic saves from a Turnbull header at the base of the post, Mulkerrin, Smith and Bobby Combe with a net bound daisy cutter sneaking in at the post that the keeper held at full stretch.

Gordon Smith thumped the Swedish post when he anticipated a Combe back heeler Arvidsson then tipped a brilliant net bound Mulkerrin header over the crossbar

Just before the winning goal Combe through on goal brilliantly lobbed the goalkeeper only to see Edlund head the ball away from underneath the crossbar

Such was the pace and power of HIBS’ display- there was not a failure in their ranks - that many observers fancied them to bring the inaugural trophy back to Scotland

Was in the East that day the Celtic fans fired the CS canister into the HIBS fans

I reckon I must have beaten the Olympic record in vaulting the 8 foot fence to get on to the safety of the pitch coughing and spluttering

    28/11/1987 Scottish League Premier Division

    Hibernian 0 v 1 Celtic

Celtic Casuals the now defunct Celtic Soccer Crew launched a CS Gas Canister into the East causing panic and mayhem with hundreds of HIBS fans seeking refuge on the pitch

Football hooliganiism was taking a sinister turn only weeks earlier HIBS fans had been attacked at Ibrox when fireworks were launched into their end by Rangers fans

28/11/1955 European Champions Cup Quarter Final Second Leg

    Hibernian 1 v 0 Djurgardens (Agg 4-1)

    Turnbull pen 70

    Onwards march the HIBS

Hibs Younger McFarlane Paterson Thomson Plenderleith Preston Smith Combe Mulkerrin Turnbull and Ormond

Someone might have picked this up, but it was actually Hibs Casuals that set off a flare in the old main stand at Ibrox ..not Rangers equivalent

Worst ever day at a Football match was also in the East, young girl collapsed in front of me on the pitch. 40 odd people taken to hospital.

    Duncan 3
    Brownlie pen

Arthur Duncan was far and away the best player on the park in this fixture and he became the first player to score a hat-trick for HIBS in the Premier League

It was only sloppy defending on HIBS’ part that allowed Saints back into the game with Charlie Smith scoring two and Gordon Smith grabbing the other

Arthur opened the scoring after 2 minutes Smith replied on 3 minutes and then gave Saints the lead on 16 minutes Arthur was then pulled down in the box for John Brownlie to equalise from the penalty spot on 19 minutes The flying winger then added further goals on 21 and 49 minutes

    27/11/1967 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Round 2 Leg 2

    Hibernian 5 v 0 Napoli ( Agg 6-4 )

    Duncan 5
    Quinn 44
    Cormack 66
    Stanton 67
    Stein 77

Hibs have known European triumphs but never one quite like this

Hibs had to win by three clear goals and concede none to knock the Italian League leaders out of the Fairs Cup.

In five minutes the fuse that lit this explosive tie was lit when fullback Bobby Duncan carried the ball forward into midfield and from 25 yards took everyone by surprise when he unleashed a thundering left foot shot that flashed past Italian international goalkeeper Dino Zoff in the Naples goal high into the net

Peter Cormack was then pulled down inside the box but the Referee only awarded an indirect free kick that was cleared

Pat Stanton then had a header from a Pat Quinn freekick brilliantly saved by Zoff

Alan McGraw then joined in the action with a powerful shot that was deflected past the post before Colin Stein had a shot cleared off the line by Bianchi

Naples were turning physical and in fairness to the Referee this did not go unnoticed as they continued to rack up fouls ( 23 in the first half).

With the pressure mounting on the Italian goal HIBS made the breakthrough their play deserved just before half-time. Stein made it by his sheer determination in carrying the ball almost to the Naples by-line and then cutting it across goal Zoff fumbled and Quinn racing in hit a hard low shot into the net off the upright

At half-time Napoli sacrificed an attacker for a defender but it was too little too late as HIBS now had their tails up

In the second half as HIBS kicked down the slope it was attack after attack

In 67 minutes Easter Road went radge Stein won a corner Alex Scott swung it well away from Zoff and Peter Cormack rose in the box jumping at least a foot higher than everyone else to send a header beyond the goalkeeper

Two minutes later the fans were singing “Easy Easy” as Pat Stanton headed home number four at the back post courtesy of another splendid Scott cross

Zoff then dropped on a header from Stein before Girardo was sent off for kicking out at Eric Stevenson when they were both lying on the ground in front of the Stand

In 79 minutes a Napoli clearance was intercepted and Stein was sent through on goal to complete the scoring

Hibs Wilson Duncan Davis Stanton Madsen McGraw Scott Quinn Stein Cormack and Stevenson
