    1/11/2015 Scottish League Championship

    Hibernian 2 v 1 The Rangers

    Cummings 11
    Hanlon 73

Hibs ended The Rangers’ 100% record in the Championship with this win at Easter Road. Jason Cummings curled in a superb opener after 11 minutes as The Rangers defence stood and watched

The Rangers pulled one back after the restart when a speculative effort from distance by Lee Wallace was deflected into his own goal by Darren McGregor The Rangers were on the ascendency and McGregor redeemed himself when he got his head to another Wallace effort deflecting it off the underside of the crossbar and away to safety

Jason Cummings brought out a superb save from Foderingham after a superb pass from John McGinn

Hibernian regained the lead against the run of play when Paul Hanlon headed home a McGinn corner

I think Willie Hamilton was freed.

The amazing thing about Eddie Turnbull was that he stopped playing football when he left school and had one game as a trialist for a junior club before he signed for Hibs.

Harvey McCreadie a real name from the past. The rumour at the time was that signing for Hibs got him out of jail.Stayed for a couple of months, scored a couple of goals and then went back down south.

Yip late subs Sproule and Shiels carved out Shiels’ equaliser and a wicked deflection on a Gazza 25 yard strike took the ball above and beyond McKenzie in the Livvy goal for the winner three minutes later. Cue wild celebrations in three of the four Stands at Almondvale that night

Joe Harper had a stomach bug and was replaced at half-time by Alex Edwards The Italians decided enough was enough and upped the ante with goals from Pietro Anastasi 2 Roberto Bettega and Jose Altafini to put HIBS firmly back in their box

Future England Manager Fabio Capello wore #10 for Juve that night

Alan Gordon told me the story that the Stadium had a big Clock and as the big hand approached 60 minutes you could hear the natives getting restless and you would glance across at their bench and you would see a grey haired tracksuit warming up and your heart would sink ‘ Aw no Jose Altafini ‘

    Stevenson 3
    O’Rourke 2
    J Scott 2
    Cormack
    Hogg
    Davis
    Small og

After suffering two away defeats to Partick Thistle and Valencia HIBS hoped to get back to winning ways against a Hamilton team that contained ex hibee Johnny Frye and former Hearts legend Andy Bowman

In truth newly promoted Hamilton were out of their depth in the First Division and HIBS ran riot with Eric Stevenson in particular having a great game scoring his first senior hat-trick and Jim Scott and Jimmy O’Rourke each scoring doubles- O’Rourke being denied a hat-trick with the deflection for the own goal. Davy Hogg scored his first goal for the club and Joe Davis scored a goal that wasn’t a penalty

It is HIBS’ record home victory in a League match and matched their away victory versus Airdrieonians in 1959

It was the second time in this season that HIBS had scored eleven as they took eleven goals off Alloa Athletic in the quarter final of the League Cup

    Rangers 2 v 4 Hibernian

    Smith 2
    Cuthbertson
    Turnbull

Hibs travelled to Ibrox and played the hosts off the park with Gordon Smith in superlative form

The winger put HIBS ahead before Cuthbertson and Turnbull ensured a half-time lead of 3-0

The home side came out all guns blazing in the second half and pulled one back through Thornton but then came the goal of the game when Smith collected the ball some 30 yards out and crashed a shot high into the net to stun the home support into silence

A late goal by Gillick reduced the deficit but the visitors were well worthy of their 4-2 victory

What a night of frustration it was for Eddie Turnbull’s men who left the field with their heads bowed and no wonder They had attacked from start to finish but not one stroke of luck did they have Look at this for a catalogue of woes: Five goal line clearances by Leeds One HIBS shot that hit a post One disallowed goal A succession of magnificent saves by two young Leeds goalkeepers

Young Scot John Shaw was a hero in the first half and when he retired injured on came 17 year old Glen Letheren to perform equally well

It was Glen’s first senior match and one he will never forget HIBS won’t forget it either and certainly not poor Pat Stanton As the 36000 crowd held their breath at the end of extra time skipper Pat Stanton came up to take the first penalty and struck the post All the fans knew that was that Cropley Blackley Bremner and Hazel all scored but so did Lorimer F Gray Bates Clark and Billy Bremner whose shot entered the net via the underside of the crossbar

Hibs played skilful football and never stopped attacking Alan Gordon did manage to score with a header and the Referee awarded the goal but after the Leeds players protested and after consulting his linesman the counter was ruled out for offside

Leeds defended brilliantly and no one more so than Scotland Captain Billy Bremner whose sweeper role can only be described as an exercise in studied insolence but brilliant nonetheless

Leeds only had four attacks one of which Ellam had the ball in the net but was ruled out for an infringement on Jim McArthur

You have to feel sorry for HIBS there is nothing more they could have done as Leeds did to HIBS what Inter Milan did to Celtic in the Champions Cup penalty shoot out at Parkhead

I worked with Bobby Robertson's wife for a while and when she found out I was a Hibby she was very proud to tell me her husband was an ex-Hibs player. He was before my time, but whenever he's mentioned here it's never very complementary.

However, just goes to show how short or inglorious a career you may have had, ex-players generally look back on their time with affection.

Ex Junior Internationalist signed from Rangers never played a League game for us made his home debut versus Airdrieonians in the League Cup QF second leg 4-1 and played versus Besa and both legs versus Keflavik in the UEFA Cup 1973/74

I remember him as having long hair don’t think he did too much wrong tbh just fierce competition once Jim McArthur joined I suppose

Features on a programme cover (v Celtic if I’m right) in a great photo with the Colts team celebrating their King Cup win. Can’t think why anyone could be less than complimentary really, he did nothing in his time at Hibs to upset anyone. Think he lives in the Barberton area.

Yep. Sure Gordon made a great save from Brown after a lovely move which I think would have opened the floodgates

Looking at the match stats they had no shots on target and were totally inept as an attacking force the fact they did not concede more was down to good luck and Craig Gordon

Even although they were SPL runners up they had not won in five going into the fixture and their Manager produced a sick note going into the game so it was not a happy camp behind the scenes

I remember it more as a ten men defence and dirty tricks galore. The amount of jersey pulling whenever we had a corner was unbelievable, and there should have been at least one penalty in our favour.

I'm sure someone posted a still photo on here after the game which showed five fouls happening at once, grappling/Jersey holding, at a Hibs corner.

Hibs were a team in decline when they visited Dumfries for this Scottish Cup tie

The recently formed Celtic had plundered all our best players and the recently won Scottish Cup was now a distant memory and worse days were to follow

This day went well for the Hibees and they managed to overcome a spirited resistance from the home side by 7 goals to 3

Going back to the Leeds game, Billy, I'm trying to remember what the subs rule was at the time and why Leeds had a goalie on the bench which was very unusual then.
