    Scott Robertson og
    Agogo

Hibs and Dundee United played out a thriller at Easter Road. Garry O’Connor’s angled drive gave HIBS a 22nd minute lead but Jon Daly’s double either side of a Danny Swanson strike had United cruising at 3-1 up

Issiah Osbourne’s 72nd minute pile driver from the edge of the area was turned into his own net by Scott Robertson. Two minutes later Junior Agogo blasted in from 18 yards to rescue a point for the hosts

    Beuzelin
    Stewart
    Riordan

Guillaume Beuzelin put HIBS in front after 20 minutes with a free header from a Derek Riordan corner after 20 minutes

Hibs squandered several good chances before Michael Stewart bundled in a loose ball after Graeme Smith failed to hold a Garry O’Connor effort on the 68th minute.

Riordan fired in an angled drive off a post on 80 minutes before Richie Foran pulled one back for Motherwell from the penalty spot

    24/9/1977 Scottish League Premier Division

    Hibernian 2 v 0 St Mirren
    Higgins
    Macleod

Sir Alex Ferguson brought his newly promoted high flying St Mirren side to Easter Road containing the likes of Frank McGarvey and Frank McDougall but they were no match for a HIBS side that easily disposed of them. The first a 25 yard screamer from Tony Higgins and a goal from Ally MacLeod

24/9/1975 Scottish League Cup Quarter Final Leg 2

    Montrose 3 v 1 Hibernian AET 3-2 on Agg

    Duncan

Hibs leading 1-0 from the first leg got off to the perfect start when Arthur Duncan scored in the first minute but Montrose had other ideas with goals from Les Barr and Bobby Livingstone taking the game into extra time

Bobby Smith struck a post in extra time and both Harper and Blackley had goal bound efforts brilliantly stopped by Montrose goalkeeper David Gorman

With penalties looming disaster struck when Les Barr unleashed a speculative shot from fully 40 yards Jim McArthur appeared to lose and misjudge the flight of the ball and it sailed harmlessly over his head into an empty net

Pat Stanton and Tony Higgins were dropped for the home Saturday fixture versus St Johnstone prompting Pat Stanton to put in a transfer request

Eddie Turnbull's decision making was becoming very erratic by then. Pat's account of how the transfer was conducted doesn't seem fitting for a man who had given so much and who still had plenty left in the tank, although Jackie Mac did go onto be a great success at Hibs, in time. I just checked the Arbroath game, failure after two bites at it against a part time team.... not the best.

Alarm bells were ringing when he swapped Iain Munro a top top player at our level for Ally Scott and Graham Fyfe and signed the likes of Stuart Turnbull and allowed Shades to walk out the door the first time

Has there been a worse swap deal in Hibs history ???

I was probably too young to appreciate what was going on at the time and it was handled very badly by Hibs. But it probably worked out ok for Pat and Hibs. Pat wins league and Scottish cup and Hibs got Jackie Mac for a few years of great service.

16/9/1970 Inter Cities Fairs Cup Round 1 Leg 1

    Hibernian 6 v 0 Malmo

    Blair
    McBride 3
    Duncan 2

Malmo were starting to establish a European pedigree as recently as 1968 having beaten AC Milan 2- 1 and were flying in their own domestic league

Hibs of course had a European pedigree of their own and seemed too eager to please their fans only scoring the two goals in a sluggish first half- the first from Jim Blair - his first goal for HIBS -when a Jim Black shot cannoned off Joe McBride in a crowded penalty area and he was handily placed to smash the ball home The second two minutes later when a deflected Arthur Duncan shot fell to Joe McBride on the goal line and he doesn’t miss those

The second half was only minutes old when McBride was upended in the box - play on -Cropley went close with an effort and Duncan knocked one just wide

Hibs then scored three goals in 5 minutes the first a Joe McBride header from a Duncan cross to make him HIBS’ all time record scorer in Europe. McBride completed his hat-trick when in typical style he wheeled on the edge of the box and sent a thundering shot past the bewildered goalkeeper Four minutes later Duncan rose to a McBride cross and headed the ball away from the Swedish keeper. Duncan added a sixth 15 minutes from the end when he smashed home a right foot shot

Hibs blew Malmo away with a display of devastating exciting attacking football and it is worth noting that up until this point Joe McBride had scored 59 goals in 85 appearances - no wonder he was such a hero to the HIBS fans who had forgotten all about Colin Stein

    Correct!

Change that to when Bertie Auld became Manager and his target was:

    P 36 W 0 L 0 D 36 PTS 36 =Safety

And if your no happy with that you show me your medals and I’ll show you mine 😃

    Edit:

At the time of the swap Jackie Mac was a Celtic fringe player with a recent history of injury. Nowhere near the stature he eventually achieved. It took Jackie a while to find his fee5 at Hibs, meanwhile the King of Easter Road cruised his way to a title and Scottish Cup at the heart of Celtic’s defence.

BillyHibs mentioned Schades leaving, it was a swap for Bobby buckin Hutchison, not the worst ( see Ally Scott), but not really fit to lace Erich’s boots.

As for Iain Munro for Scott/Fyfe, where do you even begin to try and understand that one.

The strangest thing was Iain Munro was lucky if he played about 6 games for Der Hun before dropping out of the picture?

Absolutely love this thread. What I find mental is that by and large I must’ve attended 90% of games home and away in the 10/11 years upto about 2018 and how little I can pinpoint from anything not a ‘big’ game. Just me?

25/9/1991 Scottish League Cup Semi Final

    Hibernian 1 v 0 Rangers

    Wright 29

The team that would not die turned up at Hampden Park against the might and financial clout of Rangers with little hope of success

Rangers were without the injured Richard Gough and the soviet pair Oleg Kuznetsov and Alexei Mikhailichenko who were away on international duty but Rangers were still expected to win this

Hibs put in a solid performance especially by a midfield superbly marshalled by experienced veteran Murdo MacLeod

The breakthrough came on the half hour when exhibee goalkeeper Andy Goram - playing against his old team for the first time -came for a high ball on the edge of his box to punch clear clashing with Mark McGraw - his punch fell as far as Mickey Weir who looking up picked out new signing Keith Wright who headed past two Rangers defenders stranded on the line to put HIBS 1-0 up.

Hibs held on for the next 61 minutes thanks to some stout defending from Gordon Hunter and Tommy McIntyre and some brilliant goalkeeping from John Burridge and in particular one save from McCoist where he held the ball after Mo Johnston’s initial effort hit the post and fell kindly for McCoist Burridge being quick enough to respond to the danger

HIBS would face Dunfermline in the final who beat Airdrie in the other semifinal on penalties at Tynecastle

New signing from Sunderland Gordon Chisholm endeared himself to his new fans by opening the scoring on the 69th minute when he headed home a towering header from a Joe McBride free kick

Eight minutes later Rangers’ defence was shredded again with an action replay goal. McBride slipped the ball to skipper Iain Munro whose cross was powerfully headed home by Gordon Durie who stretched his lead as the Cup’s top scorer and won himself the Man of the Match award

Rangers were denied a penalty when Gordon Rae hauled down Ally McCoist in the box that looked even more of a penalty than the one awarded to Rangers in the first minute of the second half that was so superbly saved by Alan Rough.

    Q. How many of Hecky’s signings are still at the club?
Surprised no-one has answered this yet.

The answer is two - Doidge and Newell, as I think Allan had already agreed a pre-contract and James is away on loan.
Mature, sensible signature required for responsible position. Good prospects for the right candidate. Apply within.

26/9/2009 Scottish League SPL Match Day 6

    Motherwell 1 v 3 Hibernian

    Nish
    Riordan
    Zemmama

Merouane Zemmama made his first start for HIBS in 18 months after being on loan to Al Sha’ab in the United Arab Emirates and what an impact he had on this game scoring one and being a constant thorn in the flesh of the Motherwell defence the whole match

Hibs took the lead when Zemmama dispossessed Jim O’Brien in midfield Derek Riordan volleyed the Moroccan’s deep cross back across goal and there was Colin Nish to cushion the ball over the line

Motherwell equalised on 35 minutes when Reynolds beat Graeme Stack to O’Brien’s near post corner to head home from close range.

Hibs took the lead on the 51st minute when Liam Miller dispossessed Coke and threaded the ball through to Riordan who slotted the ball into the far corner from 16 yards.

Things got worse for Well four minutes later when O’Brien chopped down Ian Murray outside the box. John Ruddy the Motherwell goalkeeper anticipating a cross to the back post lined up his wall accordingly and Zemmama duly stepped up and curled a superb free kick just inside his near post. Zemmama was fortunate to escape a booking for over celebrating in front of the HIBS fans massed in the East Stand

26/9/1959 Scottish League Division One Old Match Day 5

    Hibernian 4 v 2 Kilmarnock

    Baxter 2
    Baker
    Macleod

A crowd of 24000 turned up at Easter Road to witness the return of Prodical Son Bobby Johnstone

Although a somewhat more rotund figure his promptings and schemings from his new position in the ‘hole’ certainly led to goals for his new team mates and augered well for the future development of youngsters Joe Baker and Johnny MacLeod

Within a month - thanks to Trainer Eddie Turnbull -Johnstone had lost one stone and he was leaner fitter, faster and ready to go

26/9/1953 Scottish League Division One Old Match Day 3

    Hibernian 4 v 1 Hamilton Academicals

    Johnstone 2
    Combe
    Ormond pen

HIBS went ahead after 19 minutes when Ormond’s cross was left by D’Arcy for Johnstone to blast home at the back post. The green and whites didn’t score again until the 57th minute when Johnstone turned provider in helping Ormond to set up Combe to make it 2-0. HIBS scored again 4 minutes later when Johnstone beat keeper Scott with a rasping drive and then 12 minutes from time Johnstone was fouled in the box and Ormond took on the task vacated by the suspended Eddie Turnbull and duly converted the kick.

Shearer scored a consolation goal for Hamilton

Willie MacFarlane future HIBS Manager made his debut in this game

Just catching up on this thread. Great memories! 're the 4-0 game at Tiny on Jim O's birthday his first goal is descibed as being from close range. My memory is both of Jimmy's goals were screamers from outside the box whereas both Eric's were scrambled home. All celebrated joyously though!!

Took my info from ‘The Rebel’s’ brilliant biography:

” With many fans still making their way into the Stadium O’Rourke celebrated his 19th birthday by opening the scoring after only two minutes when he blasted a shot past Jim Cruikshank from close range. Two minutes later I added a second from a narrow angle after my first shot had rebounded from the keeper and further goals by both O’Rourke and myself gave us what was an already unassailable 4-0 lead after just 10 minutes.”

No reason to doubt your usually impeccable recollection

My own recollections are even more hazy in my Memory Bank as I was a Hearts Fan at the time

I was probably in the local flea pit ( Tivoli ) watching the latest offering from Elvis Presley on the day in question

Hah, love it. IIRC Jimmy scored one with left & one with right. All goals were at Gorgie Road end. That was my 3rd visit to Tiny that year. On NY day I had seen a Willie Hamilton wonder goal give us a great win & in April I had seen Killie steal the league with a 2-0 win. Not a bad year for Hibs in Gorgie!

Kevin McKee brought down Durrant in the box in the first minute of the second half - a soft award that incensed the HIBS players

” But the anger turned to joy when Rough flung himself full length to turn McCoist’s spot kick round his right hand post to safety.”

    Source: Daily Ranger

PM me your email and I will forward you a copy I have the paper in front of me.

I was at the game and the memory of Rangers getting a soft award sounds about right

Edit: Jonnyboy in his excellent In Colours Green and White confirms Roughie’s excellent penalty save

I've normally got a great memory of ganes from my youth, and recall this game well - concerning that such a key event has been erased!
