I felt a bit sorry for Joe T. We signed Dave Beaumont just before the final and he was on the bench and I don't think he had even played a game for us. Always thought that Joe should have been on the bench that day

    Brilliant!

I went to every game as well just glad still to have a team to support
You're one better than me. I missed Ayr in the next round due to an exam.

29/8/1981 Scottish League Premier Division Match Day 1

    Hibernian 2 v 0 Dundee

    Murray
    Rae

Hibs marked their return to the Premier League prior to kick off in glorious sunshine on Leith by unfurling the First Division Championship Flag in this match against fellow promotees Dundee

It had been 29 years since HIBS had last unfurled a championship flag at Easter Road and on that occasion they had been celebrating their third First Division Championship in five years

It was to be a joyous day all round for the fans and the match was quickly settled by two goals in five minutes from Gary Murray and Gordon Rae

Young Peter Docherty looked an accomplished player playing beside Craig Paterson at the back but sadly this promising youngster would only play 5 games for HIBS

Dundee full back Erich Schaedler was serenaded by the HIBS fans for 90 minutes who were desperate to see him return to the club and future HIBS legend Dundee #11 Albert Kidd had a quiet game out on the left wing.

    Clyde 0 v 7 Hibernian

    Dougal
    og

Hibs has started off well in the League defeating Champions Celtic and Third Lanark at home but losing away to Dundee they now travelled to Barrowfield to face Clyde and hopefully to get back to winning ways.

Facing a very strong wind the Irishmen mastered the conditions and went ahead with a header by Johnny Pryce following a well placed George Dougal corner kick and Pat Murray got a second before half time The old dogs in green jerseys showed better tactics and keeping the ball low they made good headway giving the opposition defence lots of work

In the second half Hibernian piled on another five goals John Kennedy after clever work by Pat Murray, a penalty, John Kennedy again with a header, Barney Breslin with a finely judged shot and number seven from a George Dougal deflection

Hibernian are still the old rushing fearless lot and doubtless when they are at their best they are difficult to beat

Two days later HIBS were at St James Park to play a friendly against Newcastle United and took a creditable one each draw

In this season Hibernian finished runners up to Champions Hearts by two points

Hibs would gain some small revenge by defeating Hearts 3-0 in the final of the Rosebery Cup at Tynecastle

30/8/1975 Scottish League Premier Division Match Day 1

    Hibernian 1 v 0 Hearts

    Harper 43

Hibernian Football Club was now 100 years old and 45 years ago today they played their first match in the newly formed Premier Division against local rivals Hearts and what better way to celebrate than with a convincing 1-0 win

Joe Harper picked up a pass in midfield from John Brownlie and unleashed an unstoppable drive from fully 35 yards past Hearts’ goalkeeper Jim Cruickshank

Harper’s goal extended HIBS’ seven year unbeaten home record against their city rivals and Manager Eddie Turnbull commented that the final result did not reflect Hibernian’s dominance of the match but that the valuable points were all that mattered

The match official was Eddie Thomson the first Edinburgh Official to officiate an Edinburgh derby

Joe Harper would play for Scotland in Denmark on the Wednesday scoring the only goal but would find himself inveigled in the infamous night club incident

30/8/1952 Scottish League Cup Group 1

    Hibernian 3 v 0 Celtic

    Turnbull
    Reilly 2

HIBS and Celtic faced off in this final section game at Easter Road. HIBS had the superior goal difference but Celtic only needed a point to progress so HIBS had to win

Hibs fielding the Famous Five were imperious and a rapier like attack ended with Eddie Turnbull firing a trade mark rocket shot into the Celtic net. Celtic tried to fight back but HIBS stood firm and when a corner from Smith was headed against the bar by Buchanan Reilly was first to react and gave HIBS a 2-0 interval lead

The second half started with HIBS in the ascendency and after Ormond had missed two decent chances to score Reilly added a third to ensure that it would be HIBS to progress to the next round

    Atherton

Honourable mention of this match under the stewardship of legendary Manager Dan McMichael

Hibs would go on to win the League in this season by 6 clear points to runners up Dundee.

HIBS actually clinched the title on 20th December 1902 in a 2-0 win away to Partick Thistle making them briefly both League Champions and Scottish Cup holders

In their penultimate game HIBS would defeat Celtic 4-0 at Parkhead still our record score at that venue to this day

31/8/2002 Scottish League SPL Match Day 5

    Motherwell 0 v 2 Hibernian

    Townsley 2

HIBS secured their first victory of the season after suffering a shattering defeat in the last minute after leading for so long at Dundee a week earlier

HIBS dominated this game and missed chance after chance in the first half with Paco Luna being the main offender. Derek Townsley then stepped up and sent a 25 yard free kick high into the Motherwell net to the left of goalkeeper Woods

HIBS continued to dominate with Luna missing another chance and sending a second chance over the crossbar from an Ian Murray centre.

Further misses into the second half from a Janos Matyus header following a Steven Whittaker corner and an Ian Murray one on one with goalkeeper Woods had the HIBS fans biting their nails

As is so often the case Motherwell almost equalised when an attempt from Steven Ferguson whizzed past Colgan’s post. James McFadden then skipped through one on one with Colgan but he showed too much of the ball to the HIBS keeper

Townsley scored a second with a header when Paco Luna picked him out at the back post with an accurate cross at the second attempt with 18 minutes remaining

31/8/1993 Scottish League Cup Quarter Final

    Partick Thistle 2 v 2 Hibernian AET ( HIBS won 3-2 on pens )

    McAllister 2

Another rip roaring old fashioned cup tie at ‘Firhill for Thrills.’

Roddy Grant gave the jags the lead but Kevin Crunchie McAllister equalised. The match went into extra-time and this time McAllister gave HIBS the lead. Albert Craig equalised for Thistle to take the game into penalties.

Jim Leighton was Hibs’ hero saving three penalty kicks bringing cries of ‘Scotland’s number one!’ from the HIBS fans

Jim Leighton would take full advantage of this lifeline offered to him by Alex Miller going on to resurrect his Scotland career playing 23 times for his country whilst at HIBS

Hibs would lose in the final of this competition to Rangers at Celtic Park

    Aberdeen 2 v 3 Hibernian

    Cropley 2
    Harper

Ian Purdie gave Aberdeen the lead but a brilliant solo effort from Alex Cropley pulled HIBS level

Billy Pirie put Aberdeen ahead into the second half but Joe Harper equalised with a cracking free-kick with only four minutes to go. That man Cropley bagged the points at the death with a tap in from a Harper pass

Hibs finished second in this season splitting the Old Firm Rangers finishing Champions stopping Celtic making it 10 in a row.

1/9/1982 Scottish League Cup Group 3

The final game of a disastrous League Cup campaign and HIBS were booed off the pitch by their fans at full time. The following day Bertie Auld and his Assistants Pat Quinn and John Lambie were relieved of their duties to be replaced by the dream team of Pat Stanton Jimmy O’Rourke and George Stewart

    Q. Bertie Auld was one of only two HIBS Managers to have played for the club and to have won the European Champions Cup. Can you name the second Manager?

    2/9/1964 Summer Cup Final

    Aberdeen 1 v 3 Hibernian

    Hamilton
    Scott
    Cormack

After drawing a two legged final 4-4 HIBS lost the toss and had to travel to Pittodrie for this Typhoid outbreak delayed winner takes all 1963/64 replayed Summer Cup Final

Unfortunately the final in Aberdeen took place two days before the Forth Road Bridge opened and once again HIBS and their fans took the long way around having to travel up via Kincardine Bridge

Man Of The Match Willie Hamilton opened the scoring in the opening minutes and even although Ernie Winchester equalised for the Dons mid way through the first half HIBS never really looked in any danger striking the bar on three occasions and Pat Stanton even having the luxury of missing a penalty

At half time the legend that is Jock Stein told his troops just to “keep playing they way you are playing” and without a doubt the cup would be in the bag

With Hamilton pulling the strings in midfield HIBS continued to dominate Peter Cormack sending Jim Scott through for HIBS’ second and Cormack himself adding a third with a speculative shot in a crowded penalty area past an unsighted Aberdeen goalkeeper

Hibs had won their first trophy in 12 years and made the mistake of doing a lap of honour around the pitch where they were booed and pelted with stones from the Aberdeen end.

John Parke made his first appearance in the competition in this game

Surely good times were just around the corner for the Hibees?

    Hibernian 3 v 5 Albion Rovers

    Nutley

This match is significant in that it was the last game HIBS played in peacetime before the onset of the Second World War

Willie McCartney’s HIBS went behind to a dubious Beath penalty. Bobby Nutley and James McLean gave HIBS a 2-1 interval lead. Burke equalised for Rovers on 53 minutes before Sammy Kean put HIBS ahead. Rovers once again equalised through Burke and as HIBS chased the winner they were caught by two Rovers counters from Campbell and Deegan

Didn't know Bobby Nutley got the DFC. Of course we tend not to broadcast these things on this side of the city. Another with a war ruined career.

3/9/1991 Scottish League Cup Quarter Final

    Ayr United 0 v 2 Hibernian

    McGinlay

Hibs took a huge travelling support down to Ayrshire. The match was to be a tale of two different tactical styles. HIBS with their high tempo passing style and Ayr with their route one tactic of the high ball up to their two tall strikers Ally Graham and Greg Shaw

Hibs were out of the blocks faster and almost took the lead after 8 minutes. Brian Hamilton fed a clever pass to Mark McGraw in midfield who turned to thread a lovely pass through to Michael Weir clean through on goal who was thwarted by Ayr United goalkeeper Cammy Duncan who had read the situation

Ayr responded by lumping the ball up to their two big men but they were superbly marshalled by Tommy McIntyre and Gordon Hunter who would both be superb all night. At the other end Man of the Match Mark McGraw seemed to be everywhere with his tireless running closing down defenders and his dangerous flicks causing all sorts of mayhem in the Ayr defence

After 25 minutes Weir skinned Furphy before threading an intelligent ball out to Keith Wright. His cross was only half dealt with by the Ayr defence as far as Murdo MacLeod who nodded the ball back across the six yard box to the lurking Pat McGinlay who hammered the ball past Duncan from close range

Into the second half and McGraw and Wright ( twice) both missed good chances to increase HIBS’ lead.
Weir bulleted a header off Duncan’s crossbar before Ayr enjoyed 10 minutes of superiority coming close to equalising on a couple of occasions

The Ayrshire men were to rue those misses as with only 15 minutes to go Brian Hamilton sent McGraw racing down the wing the youngsters cross was met by the inrushing Keith Keith Keith Wright and this time he made no mistake hammering the ball past Duncan.

Hibs would face Rangers at Hampden in the semi-final

Hibs:Burridge Miller Mitchell Hunter McIntyre MacLeod Weir Hamilton Wright McGraw and McGinlay

    Subs: Orr and Evans

Footnote: Interesting that there are exactly 5 years between the two highlighted games and we have the same goalscorers ...Spooky!

    Hibernian 2 v 0 St Mirren

    Cormack 2

Shankly did not give a reason for his resignation but it was believed that he was disillusioned with the HIBS Board and the sales of Willie Hamilton, John McNamee, Neil Martin,Jim Scott and Colin Stein against his wishes

Peter Cormack also wanted away but to everyone’s surprise Peter Marinello would leave before him

I have another story about that game following on from the Kilmarnock game. Again I borrowed my brother's car, think I told him this time, and piled in another four Alloa Hibbies. Got to the game and as we had comps again from the boys who worked for Alloa brewery we were in the centre stand. As the game went on I don't think we were playing too well and there were two old Ayr utd boys just along from us slagging Hibs off loudly so we could hear. One had just finished saying "if that's your premier League you can keep it" just as we scored the opener. Well I was up and across giving it the GIRFUY action shouting "now that's your ****ing premier League".
Anyway on the way back after our win we were on the motorway heading back towards Glasgow and we were listening to the penalty shoot out between celtic and Airdrie. When Airdrie won we were hanging out the windows, banging in the roof, peeping the horn and shouting like loons. Another great trip on the way to a cup win!! I wish we were all 21 again!!

What a ridiculous circumstance, a 2 legged final going to a replay! Imagine dragging out a cup win over 3 games. I don’t think my liver could hack that.

4/9/1985 Scottish League Cup Quarter Final

    Hibernian 4 v 4 Celtic AET ( HIBS won 4-3 on pens)

    Cowan
    Durie 2
    Harris

Bottom of the League Hibernian entertained Celtic in this midweek fixture The HIBS fans were crammed into the Cowshed and the Main Stand as the construction of a roof over the East was underway

Hibs may have been bottom of the League but they were a different proposition in the League Cup with dangerous duo Cowan and Durie sitting as joint top scorers in the competition with 5 goals a piece

HIBS went behind after two minutes when a shot from Mo Johnston struck Ally Brazil on the way in wrong footing Alan Rough. Stevie Cowan headed home a Durie cross to equalise after 30 minutes. Juke Box then put HIBS ahead with a header from an Alan Sneddon cross. Davie Provan equalised for Celtic just before the break.

Substitute Colin Bomber Harris gave HIBS the lead on 58 minutes when he calmly waltzed round Pat Bonnar and rolled the ball into the empty net. HIBS were still congratulating themselves when that man Johnston pulled one back one minute later

Eight minutes into extra time and Roy Aitken went on a ‘mazy’ beating four defenders before shooting low past Alan Rough. Three minutes later Gordon Durie took the game into penalties when his effort was deflected past Bonnar by Danny McGrain

The penalty shoot out took place in front of the packed Cowshed. Iain Munro was first up for HIBS 1-0 Roy Aitken watched as Roughie brilliantly saved his penalty Durie made it 2-0. Roughie saved Peter Grant’s attempt. Gordon Rae misses. Paul McStay makes it 2-1. Mark Fulton scores 3-1 Brian McClair scores 3-2. Ally Brazil steps up to win the tie and fires high and wide over the crossbar. Tommy Burns steps up to take the tie into sudden death. Stevie Cowan steps up and coolly slots home to give HIBS the lead. Irish international Pierce O’Leary steps up to send his effort high and wide over the crossbar to the delight of the HIBS fans massed behind the goal.

Hibs would meet Rangers in a two legged semi final

Normal service was resumed on the Saturday in the League when Celtic ran out 5-0 winners

4/9/1971 Scottish League Division One Old Match Day 1

    Hearts 0 v 2 Hibernian

    Cropley 84
    Hamilton 90

This drab match looked to be going the same way as many derbies about this period a 0-0 until Alex Cropley unleashed a fantastic shot from 25 yards which tore into the net high past Jim Cruikshank five minutes from the end

It must be one of the best goals ever scored by a HIBS player at Tiny.

Johnny Hamilton a late Sub for Eric Stevenson settled it with a goal in the last minute

The result meant that HIBS hadn’t lost a League game at Tynecastle in 8 years and Hearts hadn’t even scored a goal in the last six

This was Eric Stevenson’s last first team start for HIBS

Special mention to Jim Herriot who was outstanding in this game.

4/9/1961 Inter Cities Fairs Cup Round 1 First Leg

    Hibernian 3 v 3 Belenenses

    Fraser 2
    Baird pen

I noticed there was a thread on here about great comebacks but this game must surely be a contender

Hibs faced Belenenses of Portugal who were no mugs having recently disposed of the likes of Barcelona, Stade Reims, Newcastle, St Etienne, Valencia and Seville

If HIBS didn’t know they would be in for a game they knew it after half an hour in as Belenenses had raced into a 0-3 lead with goals from Matateu 2 and Yauca.

Into the second half and roared on by the large HIBS support HIBS responded when John Fraser scored with a header on 47 minutes from an Eric Stevenson cross. Fraser added a second on 53 minutes and HIBS had pulled it back on the hour when Sammy Baird as cheeky as you like from the penalty spot waited on the Portuguese goalkeeper to commit before calmly rolling the ball into the opposite corner

Hibs continued to bombard the Portuguese goal but could not find a winner

Hibs would win the second leg 3-1

Hibs : Simpson Hughes McClelland Baxter Grant Baird Scott Stevenson Fraser Gibson and MacLeod

5/9/1931 Scottish League Division Two Match Day 7

    Hibernian 2 v 4 St Bernard’s

    Burke
    Brown

Hibs were struggling to adjust to life in the second division.St Bernard’s outfoxed them and were playing fast attractive football. HIBS took an early lead through Burke but turned around at half time 1-3 down.

Harry Brown reduced the leeway into the second half but goalkeeper George Blyth gave away a penalty in the closing stages breaking his leg in the incident and St Bernard’s scoring from the resulting penalty

6/9/2000 Scottish League Cup Round 3

    Falkirk 1 v 2 Hibernian AET

    Latapy 2

Premier League leaders HIBS headed to First Division Falkirk for this midweek League Cup tie

HIBS’ star man Russell Latapy was confined to the bench by Manager Alex McLeish after returning late from international duty

The first half was a boring affair but the game burst into life on 74 minutes when on loan Newcastle striker David McMahon rose to power home a Gareth Hutchison cross with a superb back post header to give the Bairns the lead scoring his third goal in two games

The Falkirk cheers were short lived however when HIBS’ two substitutes combined five minutes later to draw HIBS level.

Latapy collected a pass from Mixu Paatelainen on the edge of the home box and the midfielder drilled a shot just inside Miles Hogarth’s left hand post

The former Hearts stopper then made two point blank stops from Paatelainen as HIBS looked to put the tie to bed

Hogarth’s resistance was broken in 118 minutes when Latapy latched on to Hakim Sar’s pass on the left edge of the penalty box before steadying himself and ramming a left foot shot high into the top left hand corner

Hibs Colgan Collins Fenwick Sauzee McIntosh Lehmann T Smith Brebner Jack Zitelli and O’Neil

    Subs: Latapy Paatelainen Sar Hakim

Willie Jamieson scores on his debut with a tap in after the Motherwell goalkeeper had parried Derek Rodier’s shot. Jamieson started in place of the unavailable Ally MacLeod

6/9/1969 Scottish League Division One Old Match Day 3

    Hibernian 5 v 1 Partick Thistle

    McBride 3
    Cormack 2 ( I pen )

I attended this game for the last 20 minutes as I had been playing football at Holyrood Park

Looking back what strikes me is that the old East was mobbed yet the official attendance was only 7650?

Not bad value as I reckon I saw three goals

Tom McNiven was Manager as Bob Shankly had resigned

Alan Hansen played for Partick this day and a young Arthur Duncan scored Partick Thistle’s goal

Hibs Marshall Shevlane Jones Blackley Black Stanton Marinello Hamilton McBride Cormack and Stevenson

As far as attendances are concerned, like most clubs, neither Hibs or Hearts issued figures. The papers always printed round figures and the Fitbastats figures for that era is a figment of their imagination I think.Fans used to talk of turnstile 32 being for Harry Swan’s personal pocket money.

Agree attendances at ER were always underestimated for tax avoidance purposes

There was talk of a Gordon Smith turnstile too.

Think a few of the turnstile collectors pocketed a large wedge of cash for themselves.
Sure a few got caught and charged.

That was far more recent though. I seem to remember something like that from the 80s.

Jambos got caught doing it a few years back too. Giving punters child tickets at the desk and pocketing the difference, that was one of many scams from the rock steady guys.

7/9/1974 Scottish League Division One Old Match Day 2

    Hibernian 2 v 1 Hearts

    Clunie og
    Duncan

Hibs’ first home League match of the season brought newly promoted Hearts to Easter Road. Hearts would not be a soft touch as they had won their League Cup section.

Hibs took an early lead when Bobby Smith’s shot was deflected past Kenny Garland by defender Davie Clunie. HIBS continued to dominate the game and should have doubled their lead just before half time when HIBS were awarded a penalty but Garland saved Joe Harper’s spot kick.

On the hour HIBS increased their lead when Arthur Duncan volleyed home a Joe Harper cross but this lead was reduced when Rab Prentice was tripped in the box by Des Bremner and Donald Ford converted the penalty to give Hearts a glimmer of hope.

This glimmer of hope should have been extinguished when Referee Bobby Davidson awarded HIBS a second penalty but Garland saved Alex Cropley’s spot kick.

Hibs: McArthur Brownlie Schaedler Stanton Spalding Bremner Smith Cropley Harper Gordon and Duncan
