19/7/2018 UEFA Europa League First Qualifying Round Second Leg

    NSI Runavik 4 v 6 Hibernian ( Agg 5-12)

    McGinn
    Stevenson
    Gray
    Ambrose
    Mallan 2

Hibs eased into the second qualifying round but not without suffering an early shock as they found themselves 0-2 down in six minutes thanks to Efe Ambroses’ own goal and the first of Klaemint Olsen’s hat-trick

Hibs levelled the score on the day when a David Gray cross to the back post was volleyed home by John McGinn and a rare Lewis Stevenson strike that went in via a post from a Stevie Mallan cut-back. Olsen added his second before David Gray completed the first half scoring with an accurate close range strike at the back post.

Into the second half and Ambrose gave HIBS the lead with a close range finish from a McGinn free-kick. Olsen completed his hat-trick when he followed up on a poor Porteous back header to cleverly chip Bogdan

Two late goals by summer signing from Barnsley Stevie Mallan completed the scoring the first a trade mark free-kick into the top corner and the second a dipping drive from long range that took a wicked deflection and looped over the goalkeeper

    Hibernian 2 v 0 Alloa

    Doidge
    James

Martin Boyle returned to action after missing half of the previous season from an injury he picked up on international duty with Australia

Paul Heckingbottom’s HIBS continued to make heavy weather of the League Cup competition as it took 68 minutes for Christian Doidge to open the scoring with his first goal for the club accidentally injuring brave Alloa goalkeeper, Neil Parry in the process. Tom James added the second with a sumptuous strike into the top corner to notch his first goal for the club following a cut-back from Stevie Mallan.

21/7/2016 UEFA Europa League Second Qualifying Round Leg 2

    SDG

Captain David Gray levelled this tie on aggregate with a deft finish with the outside of his right boot from an acute angle before having to limp off injured shortly after

There was no further scoring after extra time and HIBS cruelly exited the tournament on penalties after the normally reliable SJM missed HIBS’ first penalty, Hanlon, Holt and Boyle converted theirs but to no avail as Brondby left no room for error winning the shoot-out 5-3.

22/7/2006 Intertoto Cup Round 3 Second Leg

    Hibernian 2 v 1 Odense ( Agg 2-2)

    Jones
    Dalglish

1-0 down from the first leg HIBS struggled to breakdown a danish side -containing ex hibee Ulrik Laursen - that put every man behind the ball and were expert at retaining possession denying HIBS the space needed to exploit the pace of Ivan Sproule

Hibs failed to learn their lesson when midfielder Tobias Grahn who had missed two glorious opportunities to open the scoring just after the interval took his third chance when he gratefully accepted a Morten Fevang pass to smash the ball beyond Simon Brown to put the Danes 2-0 up and give them a valuable away goal silencing the home crowd

All credit to HIBS now needing three goals to qualify they pushed every man forward and centre half Rob Jones immediately pulled a goal back when he got his head to a misdirected shot from Michael Stewart. Kevin Thomson went close with a curler that just went past the far post and Stephen Glass shot over the crossbar from a good position

With ten minutes remaining first half substitute Paul Dalglish who had replaced the injured Chris Killen gave HIBS the lead with a clever goal and Rob Jones was pushed up beside him as an auxiliary centre forward

Unfortunately HIBS were unable to breach a well marshalled Odense defence for a third time and the danish side held on

Rot Weiss Essen was the 50th anniversary celebration of the European Cup tie, iirc. Still got the t-shirt from that year.
Don't know why, since it's not even close to fitting now.

Sat beside about a dozen of their fans in the West Lower seemed a good bunch of guys but I think their team might have fallen on hard times

Bought a HIBS/Rot Weiss anniversary mug from the shop

Dunno what happened to it ?

    Hibernian 0 v 2 Celtic

The first game of the season and speculation continued to surround the future of HIBS Manager Colin Calderwood

Hibs welcomed new summer signing Sean O’ Hanlon from MK Dons and had Garry O’Connor and Ivan Sproule both making their second debuts for the club

HIBS started ok at a sun drenched Easter Road but found themselves one goal down after only 14 minutes when goalkeeper Graham Stack made a mess of a routine save from a Kris Commons free-kick and dropped the ball at the feet of exhibee Anthony Stokes who was lurking on the byline and he gratefully dispatched the ball into the roof of the net from an acute angle.

Ki Sung-Yueng added a second on the hour with a left foot strike and Stack redeemed himself when he pushed a Commons penalty onto the post after Ivan Sproule was adjudged to have fouled Emilio Izaguirre on the edge of the box

Franck Sauzee restored the equilibrium from the penalty spot after debutant Paco Luna was upended in the penalty box by Kilmarnock goalkeeper Gordon Marshall. Christophe Cocard restored Kilmarnock’s lead just before the interval when he hammered home a bobbling ball across the six yard line unguarded at the back post

Hibs pushed forward second half piling on the pressure missing a good few chances forcing the home fans to wait until the 82nd minute when Ulrik Laursen headed home a David Zitelli corner to salvage a point

HIBS got the goal their efforts deserved on 31 minutes when Dalglish centred for Killen, who saw his shot once again blocked but Irishman Dean Shiels was on hand to drive a six yard shot off the underside of the crossbar that the Referee adjudged to have crossed the line

    29/7/2002 Friendly Challenge Match

    Hibernian 2 v 2 Everton

    O’Connor

Everton Manager Davie Moyes brought a strong team North for this Challenge Match a team that included 16 year old wonder kid Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney opened the scoring for Everton with a header from a corner conceded following a fine point blank double save from Nick Colgan on the half hour

Garry O’Connor gave Alan Stubbs the slip on 37 minutes to equalise past new Everton signing Richard Wright from 14 yards out

HIBS took the lead six minutes after the restart when Freddie Arpinon cleverly picked out Tam McManus who slotted the ball past Wright from 16 yards cue over exuberant celebrations

Too many substitutions by both sides then spoiled the flow of an otherwise entertaining game. Both Rooney and Graveson were removed by Moyes for their own good after picking up bookings as the game started to get over heated

Hibs looked to be assured of victory until Matt Doumbe inexplicably handled the ball in the box gifting David Unsworth a penalty kick and a share of the spoils with only four minutes to go.

Remembering the late Johnny Hamilton after 30 minutes he would be covered in sweat the long black hair would be matted down to his shoulders he would have a big red face and he would just laugh it off as a fluke

31/7/1999 Scottish League SPL Match Day 1

    Hibernian 2 v 2 Motherwell

    Lehmann 2

The opening day of the 1999/00 Season marked Hibernian’s greatly anticipated return to the Premier League after one season in exile.

On a hot sunny day at Easter Road 13000 fans turned up to welcome the Hibees back to their rightful place among Scottish football’s elite but if truth be told despite the considerable talent on show the first half was a scrappy affair

That all changed one minute before the interval when French midfielder Fabrice Henry played a fantastic through ball to Dirk Lehmann and the German striker was able to send an assured finish beyond exhibee goalkeeper Andy Goram to put the hibeees 1-0 up to chants of ‘ Hibees are back’ from the terraces

Into the second half and Motherwell made a significant change bringing on HIBS supporting winger Pat Nevin and what an impact he had on proceedings immediately getting on the end of a Lee McCulloch knockdown from a Goodman cross to bundle the ball home and square the game.

Hibs thought they had won the game ten minutes from the end when Lehmann, once again, rose highest in the box to get on the end of a Justin Skinner cross to power home a header but unfortunately HIBS could not hold on for all three points and Motherwell equalised through Stevie Nicholas in stoppage time

    31/7/1974 Dryborough Cup Semi-Final

    Hibernian 2 v 3 Rangers

    Harper 2

This was the third season in succession that HIBS had faced Rangers at Easter Road at the semi-final stage of the Dryborough Cup

The pattern of play followed the previous semi-finals with HIBS on the front foot pressing the play and creating chances pinning Rangers back for the first 20 minutes Unfortunately HIBS were unable to make the breakthrough and Rangers came more and more into the game scoring twice before the interval through Alex McDonald and Derek Parlane

Things went from bad to worse when Graham Fyfe increased Rangers’ lead early in the second half. HIBS fought back and scored twice through Joe Harper but were unable to find a third goal to force the game into extra-time

The game fizzled out with the HIBS fans singing ‘ All we are saying is give us a goal ‘

On the same evening both Jimmy O’Rourke and Alan Gordon played in midfield for the reserves against Cowdenbeath at Central Park in a 3-1 win

    31/7/1971 Friendly Challenge Match

    Hibernian 0 v 2 Middlesbrough

Eddie Turnbull’s first game in charge of HIBS against a very strong and experienced Middlesbrough side

Bertie Auld made his debut brought into the team by Turnbull because of his experience and found himself in direct opposition to England World Cup winner Nobby Stiles in midfield

In one crunching earth shattering tackle Stiles went in over the ball on Auld causing him to land awkwardly on the bone hard surface

Trainer Tom McNiven came on and immediately told Bertie he would have to come off as he had ‘done’ his collar bone. Give me five minutes says the bold Bertie. Five minutes later Stiles is getting carried off on a stretcher. ‘ Ref Sub! ‘

    Middlesbrough scored two late goals

HIBS returned to the scene of the crime after losing the Scottish Cup Final 1-6 only a few months earlier and as promised this time they would not be leaving empty handed

HIBS totally controlled the match from the kick off racing into a three goal lead Alan Gordon firing in a quick fire double and only being denied a hat-trick as his third attempt on goal was deflected into his own net by Celtic Captain Billy McNeill

The Celtic fans decided to invade the pitch as they were unhappy at seeing their heroes getting so comprehensively thumped as was so often the case at that time. The Referee had no choice but to remove the players from the pitch.

This seemed to upset HIBS ‘ concentration and the team seemed to lose their rhythm and they found themselves tying the tie after 90 minutes, Jimmy Johnstone twice scoring and Billy McNeill scoring at the correct end this time

The heat, the hard surface and the big pitch was beginning to take its toll on the players as many had their socks rolled down around their ankles and their shirts outside their shorts

Eddie Turnbull decided to replace the exhausted Johnny Hamilton with Jimmy O’Rourke and the change proved to be a masterstroke. Jimmy O’Rourke collected the ball some thirty five yards outside the Celtic goal in the first half of extra time and he appeared to be running out of options when he suddenly unleashed a glorious strike into Evan Williams’ top left postage stamp corner to put HIBS 4-3 ahead.

Celtic pushed for an equaliser but the clock was ticking down. Late into the second half of extra-time - Arthur Duncan out on the left wing at walking pace appeared to be running down the clock - when in typical Arthur fashion a sharp burst of pace past one man - past two then a low hard shot across the bows of Williams and inside his far post from a tight angle - 5-3 to the Hibees revenge mission accomplished

A meeting held in the Catholic Institute-St Mary’s Halls attached to St Patrick’s Church in the Cowgate led to the formation of Hibernian Football Club on Friday 6th August 1875.

The unlikely pair of gentlemen behind the move were Canon Edward Hannan and Michael Whelahan of The Catholic Young Men’s Society

Both men had been born in Ireland and had moved to Edinburgh and together with thousands of their countrymen and women had set up home in the Old Town of Edinburgh known as ‘Little Ireland’ which took in the Cowgate and its surrounding areas

The ‘establishment’ and local teams were reluctant to accept these Irish incomers so the decision to form their own team for Irish Catholic’s was taken

Hibernian was run by St Patrick’s CYMS as an amateur charitable football club. The charitable work of Hibernian became legendary not only in Edinburgh but throughout Scotland and their influence in spreading the popularity of football is reflected today by two senior Scottish football clubs who owe their existence to Hibernian: Celtic Football Club and Dundee United

Hibs’ centenary Captain and club legend Pat Stanton is a direct descendant of Michael Whelahan the first Captain of Hibernian Football Club

I'll say it again but this is the best thread on hibs.net.

Some games I can clearly remember from being there, some are hazy, and some I can only imagine.

    Thank you.
