Hibs got their first home victory over top of the table Hearts in 10 years and Alex Millers first ever victory over Hearts as HIBS Manager at a sold out Easter Road

Hibs took the lead after 5 minutes when Henry Smith could not hold a shot from Paul Kane and Eddie May tapped it home after one of his trademark late runs into the box

Hearts equalised 10 minutes later when John Colquhoun skipped past Alan Sneddon out wide and sent in a cross for you know who?

Paul Kane gave HIBS the lead just before half-time when he headed home an Eddie May corner

There was no further scoring but there was a coming together of both sets of fans after the final whistle that was handbags at nine paces

Ex HIBS Manager John Blackley then employed by Tottenham Hotspur as Chief Scottish Scout sat in the Stand and was reported to have been looking at John Collins

18/10/2010 Hibernian appoint Colin Calderwood as Manager.

Our second worst Manager of all time :

    P 49 W 12 D 11 L 26

His only achievement was a surprise victory over Rangers at Ibrox

The club had to bring in Pat Fenlon to save us from relegation

Be careful what you wish for as our worst Manager ever was still to come

    18/10/2003 Scottish Premier Division

    Hibernian 0 v 2 Livingston

A larger crowd than normal attended this match as HIBS legend Joe Baker had sadly tragically passed away on 6th October 2003

Livingston would beat us four times in this season one of them being the Scottish League Cup Final

    18/10/1989 UEFA Cup Round 2 Leg 1

    Hibernian 0 v 0 Liege

The kick off was delayed for fully 15 minutes to allow the near full capacity crowd into the Stadium for Hibs’ 69th game in Europe

When the game did eventually kick off the HIBS fans also discovered that Liege had brought l’autobus with them playing a sweeper and two markers and everyone and his cat in midfield

Hibs played some neat football but were perhaps guilty of taking the extra touch at times and were also guilty of not using the wings to bypass the congested midfield The Belgians resorted to fouling - largely going unpunished and time wasting tactics early in the match

Hibs’ best player in the first half was Michael Weir who tried to lead by example taking the fight to Liege and was unlucky when he got too much elevation on an Evans cutback

Hibs had a goalden chance to take the lead 11 minutes before the interval when they were awarded a penalty when Keith Houchen latched onto a long through ball from Paul Kane in the box his attempt on goal went past the post but his feet were clearly taken from under him by Wegria in mid shot - an obvious penalty

There was a delay of two minutes whilst Alan Sneddon received treatment for an injury and I noticed that Captain Andy Goram ran the length of the pitch to make sure Houchen took the kick

When eventually he did take the kick the shot wasn’t firmly enough placed and Munaron was able to make an easy diving save

HIBS continued to make all the running in the second half with John Collins blasting over from a good position The Belgians were happy to soak up all the pressure with the ever dangerous De Sart making good contact with a 25 yarder and Danny Boffin sweeping a deflected shot wide of the target in a seperate move

HIBS introduced talisman Stevie Archibald on 65 minutes and should have taken the lead 5 minutes later when Neil Cooper got on the end of a Gareth Evans corner only to see his excellent header beat Munaron all ends up but could only watch as Danny Boffin headed his effort off the line

Hibs Goram Kane Sneddon Cooper Mitchell Hunter Weir Hamilton Houchen Collins and Evans

Jim Docherty gave Saints an early lead

With time running out and with bestest buddies Ralph Callachan and Jackie McNamara both off injured Willie Jamieson equalised from a Terry Wilson cross with 15 minutes left.

Super Ally MacLeod sealed the points with a glorious long range effort in the dying moments

    Strasbourg 2 v 0 Hibernian

A French side containing internationalists Dominique Dropsy Francis Piasecki Albert Gemmrick and Raymond Domenech were too strong for HIBS on the night

HIBS can feel aggrieved as the Hungarian Referee awarded the French side a soft penalty - an award that would eventually win the tie -many observers thought that the HIBS defender had cleanly and fairly won the ball

Piasecki 60 pen and Gemmrich 20 were the goalscorers

    18/10/1952 Scottish League Division One

    Hibernian 4 v 2 Falkirk

    Souness

Fresh from their 2-1 win at Ibrox in front of 60000 HIBS now faced Falkirk at Easter Road but were without the services of Lawrie Reilly and Gordon Smith who were away on Scotland duty

Falkirk could smell blood and very quickly raced into an early two goal lead with Duncan converting two penalties. Goals by Ormond and Turnbull drew HIBS level going into the interval.

The tide had now turned and in the second half HIBS exerted their authority with further goals from Souness and Turnbull

Celtic fans invading the park and trying to influence games, can't possibly be true. After all they are the self proclaimed greatest fans in the world. 😁

Bobby Williamson’s HIBS make it four wins on the bounce and they would make it five thanks to Grant Brebner’s solo strike a week later at Pittodrie

Young striker Garry O’Connor staked a claim for a Scotland return when towards the end of a forgettable first half he controlled a searching pass from Zambernardi 30 yards from goal turned smartly and thundered a right footed shot high into the corner of the Thistle net

His second goal arrived two minutes from the end when he knocked the ball over the head of his marker before volleying home

HIBS scored their second when Mixu Paatelainen barged his way through a crowd of defenders to get on the end of a Craig James with nine minutes remaining

Gordon Durie’s debut for the club and Paul Kane grabbed the headlines with a double

    20/10/1979 Scottish League Premier Division

    Rangers 2 v 0 Hibernian

Jackie McNamara was sent off after 35 minutes by Referee David Syme for a challenge on Alex MacDonald

Rangers took advantage and scored through Gordon Smith and an Alex Miller penalty

    20/10/1976 UEFA Cup Round 2 Leg 1

    Hibernian 2 v 0 Osters

    Blackley
    Brownlie pen

HIBS went ahead on 34 minutes when Bobby Smith beat two men on the left and his waist high cross was bulleted home by John Blackley’s diving header. A minute later a Des Bremner shot came back off the crossbar and Bergqvist handled the rebound John Brownlie did the needful from the spot

News came through before kick off of the sad passing of club legend Davie Shaw at the young age of 60

    20/10/1973 Scottish League Division One

Man of the Match was the unheralded Bobby Combe with four assists

Hibs Younger Govan Howie Buchanan Paterson Combe Smith Johnstone Reilly Turnbull and Ormond

    20/10/1883 Scottish Cup Round 3

    Hearts 1 v 4 Hibernian

    Tommy Lee
    James Brogan
    James McGhee 2

Hibs travelled across town to face red hot favourites Hearts in the Scottish Cup

In a physical encounter played in front of 7000 souls HIBS emerged victorious

Hibs would reach the semi final of the Scottish Cup for the first time in their existence and would play the invincible Queens Park at the Holy Ground on the 19th January 1884.

There was a problem in that Queens Park were already committed to play Aston Villa in the FA Cup on the same date in Birmingham and the English team refused to move the date

Father Hannon would not hear of a walkover or have Queens Park quit one of the competitions or split their resources Instead he agreed to play the Scottish Cup game on a mutually acceptable date

The Scottish Cup Semi Final took place at Hibernian Park on 2nd February 1884

    Hibernian 1 v 5 Queens Park

    Att: 9000

Gordon Durie makes his debut on this day but Kano upstages him by firing in a double

Gordon Durie was the sort of player who once he had completed a full preseason and had worked on his upper body strength and sprinting had you walking quicker to the Stadium and had you out of your seat as soon as he got the ball with his pace power strength and direct running style you just knew something was about to happen and that he wouldn’t be here for long

Anyone remember Kano’s first goal for HIBS in a 3-1 win over Dundee in a game beamed live and attracted a 10000 crowd as Kenny Waugh allowed free admission as the previous fixture had been cancelled due to fog?

I was at both the called-off match (zero visibility!) & the free-for-all replay - my memory is that there was only 8k despite it being free.

Yeah I think you are correct 8k rings a bell right enough

Pretty sure Strachan played for Dundee but safe to say HIBS put in a decent performance that night

    GGTTH

    Edit:

ihibs has the attendance as to 2600 that cannae be right

Other sources quoting 9 and 10k but 8k sounds about right

Surely Strachan would have been long gone from Dundee by then …at Man Utd by the mid 80s ?

    Great thread..superb stuff on it

Wee question going back to the utube video earlier of the Scottish Cup win v Celtic 1986

    Great game
However, what puzzled me was the Cave being empty (thats the FF for younger viewers)
Was it price? i can't remember.
I know when the seats were installed it cost a bit more in there.
But so empty for that game, when everywhere else seemed packed
    Memory eh ?

IIRC tickets were at a premium and 20000 crammed into Easter Road that great day

Tickets for the Seated Enclosure ( Cave) were more expensive for a seat on a bench so were avoided by most supporters

There was no TV coverage at this match but that did not stop VHS tapes not Betamax of the game doing a roaring trade in the days after the final whistle

    I’ve still goat mine

    Thanks Billy

De javu all over again !!

Debate on the FF use in recent times.
The Cave getting seats caused uproar back then
Ruined atmosphere when they were installed and entry price went up.
    Cave-ites dispersed.
Some did not return as regularly .
Lesson there regard shuffling the current choir about.

Great when the club listens to fans!!

Boycott? ( Nothing to do with Hibs being favourites)
