    Dunfermline 1 v 1 Hibernian

    Welsh 95

Hibernian under Manager Alex McLeish were on a rescue mission trying to do the unthinkable and hang on to HIBS premier league status

Relegation threatened HIBS were running out of games and 8000 HIBS supporters crossed the River Forth to play fellow strugglers Dunfermline more in hope than anticipation

Hibs played well but Grant Brebner so often a rock for this HIBS team had the misfortune to score an own goal HIBS pressed and pressed to get back on level terms roared on by the large travelling support but it was not until the ninety fifth minute that Brian Welsh rose above the Dunfermline defence to power home a Kevin Harper corner

The way HIBS had played and the way they had dominated the game gave the HIBS fans belief that they could pull a season that had started so well but had turned into an unqualified disaster out of the fire

A hard fought 0-0 draw at Parkhead the next again week would set them up for a winner takes all showdown versus Dundee United at Easter Road a fortnight later

Special shout out for this end of season game as I have only just realised that I actually attended this match with a school chum fifty years ago and witnessed proceedings from the comfort of the Centre Stand compliments of two tickets gratis from a very kind gentleman in the name of Chris Shevlane

Willie MacFarllane was beginning to make his mark on the team with the introduction of a young chap from Stirling Albion by the name of Erich Schaedler and it is safe to say that Willie had an eye for a player

Jimmy ORourke scored for HIBS on eleven minutes and substitute John Murphy added a second after replacing Alex Cropley

Inter Cities Fairs Cup Semi Final First Leg 19/4/1961

    Hibernian 2 v 2 Roma

    Baker
    McLeod

Hibs go to Rome next week still with a fighting chance of reaching the final of the Inter Cities Cup And fighting is the word Once again a continental team blotted their copybook at Easter Road with a display of bad temper and vicious fouling when things were going against them The bravos of the small Italian contingent were completely overwhelmed at the end by the booing of the 40000 Scottish fans

The battle started in the second half with a deliberate back heeler from Orlando which put Davin out of the game for five minutes It was followed by the brutal felling of Scott both offences got no more than a mild remonstrance from the referee He did however eventually book Lojacano after the third of a series of particularly fierce tackles on Grant

Hibs could not match the skill of Roma in their best passages of play but they deserve tremendous credit for their spirit in fighting back to a courageous draw They lost the second goal when Davin was off the field and sheer guts won them the equaliser

Baker boosted his prestige in Italy with a glorious goal and many flashes of his brilliant best despite the fact that two defenders had been specially briefed to watch him Johnny McLeod was the other outstanding HIBS player but every man did his bit with Baird a fearless skipper

The speedy Italians got in three shots before HIBS had a look in Fortunately they were all yards high or wide Schiaffino carved the openings on two occasions thus this early he looked the dangerman and Lojacano the shot happy one HIBS conceded three free kicks under pressure and Schiaffino winced with an ankle knock after a tackle from Preston

There was no sign of HIBS settling and in fifteen minutes they fell behind to a great goal again it was the schemer Schiaffino who designed it with a pass to Lojacano from fully twenty yards the inside man unleashed a waist high shot off Simpsons fingertips and into the net

Now we saw HIBS get cracking with Baker and McLeod raising hopes The winger sent over several five crosses and Joe though closely marked all the time got in two terrific headers spectacularly saved by Cudicini as well as a shot that scraped past the upright A Baker header followed by a Preston shot had Cudicini in real trouble and Baxter kept up the good work with a header that hit the crossbar

What a roar went up in the first minute of the second half when HIBS dramatically equalised A honey of a goal it was McLeod wandered right across the field with the ball at his toes and slipped a short pass to Scott Scott’s cross looked a poor one until Baker raced back and collected the ball turned in a twinkling and crashed a twenty yard shot goalwards it was deflected by Raymondo out of the keepers reach but it looked a scorer in any case Another Baker dash and cross kept the Roma defence on the hop

There was an outbreak of booing when Orlando was involved in a touchline clash with Davin The HIBS man crumpled in pain and had to be assisted off that was a burden for HIBS to carry and it was increased in the 17th minute Baird fouled Orlando just outside the angle of the penalty area Lojacano took the freekick a rocket of a shot which caught the underside of the bar and came down The referee well up with the play immediately signalled a goal though HIBS looked momentarily inclined to protest Davin came back on but his five minutes absence had been costly

Ten minutes from time HIBS staged another thrilling comeback McLeod was fouled near the byeline he took the freekick himself and turned a cunning ball high into the far corner of the net

Scottish League First Division Old 19/4/1949

    Hibernian 5 v 0 Motherwell

    Combe
    Turnbull
    Smith
    Linwood 2

One point from their last game versus Dundee and HIBS have won the League nearest challengers Rangers have to win all three of their remaining games by twenty six goals

HIBS scored five goals but their outfield play might have produced a dozen HIBS formula of success is brief and contains no mysterious element every man is prepared to do his full share and also that little bit extra outside his own zone of operation where necessary

Combe and Turnbull were always there to help their defence and with their half backs in complete domination Farm Govan and Shaw need only complete deeds that were simple and straightforward

Buchanan was masterly whether halting Motherwells progress or providing ground routed passes to the forwards Finnigan was neatness itself Howie while sometimes a little over exuberant in the tackle never looked capable of a mistake Reilly took over the left wing berth and on this display of speed and thrust will be the tenant of the position until Ormonds fitness offers competition

From the kick off HIBS went the proper way towards accumulating goals and after Combe had failed when put through by Linwood the inside right calmly applied a finish to an inswinging Smith corner for the first goal HIBS then scored two glorious goals in fifty seconds Turnbull bored in and unleashed a ball whose progress no one could follow until it smashed against the back of the net The cheering was still at its crescendo when Linwood lobbed the ball backwards from the goal line and the in rushing Smith hit the ball on the drop past the spectating Johnston

A Linwood left footer eight minutes after the restart deserved a better resting place than a post but as two large policemen escorted one small man from the scene of his discontent Linwood put one well inside the posts after a Reilly goal maker

A spell of wild finishing was ended by Linwood spectacularly netting from twenty yards

    Scottish Cup Final 19/4/1947

    Hibernian 1 v 2 Aberdeen

    Cuthbertson

Around 82000 fans travelled from Aberdeen and Edinburgh to witness this match the first cup final where the trophy would be publicly presented to the winners as opposed to being presented in the dressing room The Hibernian team stepped off their coach and as Tom Wright described they sang lustily as though hurling defiance at all comers

In the first minute a mistake by the Aberdeen goalkeeper allowed Johnny Cuthbertson to open the scoring but by all accounts Aberdeen were the better team even allowing themselves the luxury of missing a penalty to win their first Scottish Cup 2-1

Hibs Kerr Govan Shaw Howie Aird and Kean Smith Finnigan Cuthbertson Turnbull and Ormond

    Scottish Cup Final 19/4/1924

    Hibernian 0 v 2 Airdrieonians

The 40000 Hibernian fans at Ibrox apparently turned the stadium green but any prematch confidence was quickly dispelled when Airdrieonians scored after just two minutes Then the curse struck again one HIBS player was already limping and disastrously HIBS star player and centre forward Jimmy Dunn broke down injured Airdrieonians scored another just before half time to take a well deserved two goal lead As HIBS tried to get back into the match they were awarded a penalty As the ball was placed on the spot and Hibernian player Harry Ritchie got ready to take the kick the referee ran over to his linesman and amazingly reversed his decision and awarded a goal kick instead

Airdrieonians held on to win the Scottish Cup for the only time in their history

Incidentally, that was one of the relatively rare occasions where Hibs and Hearts were playing at home on the same day.

IIRC, Hearts got beat by St Mirren (I think), and were already relegated.

This dress rehearsal for the 2016 Scottish Cup Final could not have gone any better from a HIBS point of view although somewhat aided and abetted by a few uncharacteristic mistakes from Champions The Rangers

In five minutes Jason Cummings fired home after a Tavernier throwin landed at his feet HIBS looked pumped up for this and Stokes added a second when Foderingham fumbled a shot cum cross into his own net A mistake by Mark Oxley allowed Jason Holt to pull one back for The Rangers before Niklas Gunnarsson was allowed to pick his spot when the ball fell kindly to him from a second half corner

Scottish League Division One Old 20/4/1953

    Hibernian 2 v 1 East Fife

    Johnstone
    Ormond

If any game sums up being a HIBS supporter this is it

HIBS were going head to head with Rangers and East Fife for the title with only three games to go To stand any chance of retaining the title they had to win their last remaining three games at home and hope that someone else slips up The first game brought East Fife to Easter Road for a match that if won by either side would certainly have an effect on the title hopes of the other

Although a huge crowd played its part on roaring HIBS on the occasion was clearly having an effect on both sides as the game was littered with fouls which meant that neither outfit could settle into their normal game The HIBS defenders had decided to clear their lines with long punts down the park playing right into the hands of the tall East Fife defence and there reached a stage where Lawrie Reilly could clearly be heard to be shouting to his team mates to keep the ball low It seemed to work as a flowing 13 th minute move saw Howie feed Turnbull who in turn laid the ball in front of Johnstone and the little inside right scampered through to hit the ball past Curran to make it 1-0 Eleven minutes later East Fife were level when Matthews ran down the right wing and crossed for Jimmy Bonthrone to head past Younger The Methil side had brought a good support and their fans showed their delight with loud cheers By the time the half time whistle sounded HIBS had scored three more goals but each had been disallowed for offside much to the disgust of fans and players

Eleven minutes into the second half Smith sent over a cross at about knee height and Ormond threw himself full length to head the ball in at the back post This time there was no offside so HIBS were 2-1 up and that was how it finished although there was a scare in the last minute when Fleming hit Youngers crossbar with a header

HIBS won their remaining two home games beating Third Lanark 7-1 and Raith Rovers 4-1 but sadly even although they finished on the same number of points as Rangers 43 and with a superior goal difference 42:41 they lost the title on an inferior goal average 1.82 to 2.05

I always thought Ally Brazil was a dreadful player & that clip, vs Dundee Utd, does nothing to change my opinion. He either commits a foul or gives the ball away on every occasion. I have never seen a player look less comfortable on the ball. Totally beyond my comprehension how he played so many games over so many years.

I thought that too until I played against him at the end of his career in the east of Scotland league - and he strolled the whole match. Best player on the pitch

The worst thing that happened was he scored with a penalty in that friendly. Of course when it mattered in the LC penalty shoot out, he missed comfortably!! Luckily Pierce rode to our rescue!!

Maybe nerves affected him and the real player was seen that day with nothing at stake.

My brother was sat beside an American tourist who said “ Gee this is exciting what happens next?”

He replied “ He kicks it over the crossbar “

Shocked by this almost paranormal expert prediction he turned to see my brother head in both hands

He was a very awkward player to play against and, unfortunately, to play alongside. After years of watching silky midfeilders he was never going to be a fans favourite. What I will say is, imo, under Stanton as manager he had a couple of very good seasons as a defensive midfielder.

    Hibernian 4 v 0 Motherwell 21/4/1979

    Bremner
    Rae
    Campbell
    Callachan

Motherwell rocked up at Easter Road already relegated but that hadn’t stopped them defeating Scottish Cup Finalists Rangers the week before so HIBS would have to be at their best

Rae got the first for HIBS and Ralph Callachan soon added a second

Motherwell hit the bar in one of their rare attacks

    Hibernian 3 v 1 Rangers

The final home game of the season fell to be played on Monday 21st April 1958 and it would bring Rangers to Easter Road on what was a hugely emotional night for everyone connected with Hibernian Football Club Lawrie Reilly would pull on the green and white jersey for the last time and it was perhaps fitting that Rangers would provide the opposition given the number of times Lawrie had faced and tormented their defence in years gone by as the Glasgow club battled HIBS for the top prizes on offer in Scotland

HIBS won this last home game winning 3-1 with the retiring Rellly scoring along with Baxter and Aitken

The Scottish Cup Final with Clyde was only days away

Hibs fulfilled an obligation to play a friendly against Nithsdale Wanderers and they duly obliged by thrashing their hosts but this game would be significant in being the first time the famous forward line of Smith Johnstone Reilly Turnbull and Ormond would play together and little would any of the spectators realise that this forward line would go on to dominate Scottish football in the years to come

    Gray 19

Teenager Damon Gray making his HIBS debut shot HIBS ahead on 19 minutes following a mistake by Andrew Considine Russell Anderson equalised with a well placed downward header from a tight angle on 25 minutes following a Scott Severin freekick

Another mistake by Considine let Dean Shiels in on 44 minutes and he showed tremendous composure to round Jamie Langfield and shoot home from a tight angle through the legs of despairing defender Richard Foster on the goalline

Into the second half and it all kicked off after 5 minutes Shelton Martis failed to execute a routine clearance and Andy McNeil thought he would rescue the situation by bringing down the in rushing Mackie with a flying Kung Fu kick McNeil redeemed himself with an excellent save from Mackie’s spot kick

Midfielder Sean Lynch was then sent off for a high challenge on Chris Clark John Collins immediately brought on Boozy Benji and Ivan Sproule in an attempt to hold what we had as Aberdeen turned up the heat

Mackie’s luck was out again as he struck the post before Foster hammered home a short freekick from 22 yards to equalise with 10 minutes to go

Hibs effectively ended Celtic’s title hopes with a convincing win at Easter Road

Alex McGhee was brought down inside the box by Johannes Edvaldsson - who was having a shocker and had already pulled down Willie Murray and handled in the box - but the Referee Mr Hatton decided that the original infringement took place just outside the box

It mattered not a jot as defender Bobby Smith stepped up to coolly hit his freekick around the wall and past Peter Latchford who was slow to assess the situation

Into the second half and as Celtic launched attack after desperate attack HIBS caught them on the counter and as young Lindsay Muir bore down on goal Edvaldsson had no choice but to pull him down inside the box as the HIBS man skipped past him

Ally MacLeod effortlessly slotted the penalty kick past Latchford

The opener was only delayed as Reilly scored with a fine solo effort and then turned provider for Ormond

Bobby Combe added a third into the second half before Kelly pulled back a late consolation for ‘Well

Hibs were in demand and only two days later they defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at White Hart Lane thanks to a Gordon Smith double

The Scottish Cup Semi Final 22/4/2017

    Hibernian 2 v 3 Aberdeen

    Holt
    McGeouch

Where to begin? If any game sums up Neil Lennons tenure at HIBS it is this one Wrong team and wrong tactics The ball gets played back to John McGinn from kick off he looks to take the ball for a run gets ambushed by 2-3 Aberdeen players Bartley wins the ball back plays it back to MacGregor who is slack with a pass to Ambrose Rooney latches onto it through on goal 1-0 Aberdeen

Hibs struggled to gain any foothold in the match and the most noticeable thing was that the ball was not sticking up front and just kept coming back Fraser Fyvie picked up a booking wide on the right giving away a free kick Christie lined up the free kick and went straight for goal whipping the ball in with pace and beating Rocky at his near post

Neil Lennon changed things bringing on 36 year old Grant Holt for the already booked Fraser Fyvie Suddenly the ball started to stick upfront and the whole dynamic of the game changed Holt pulling a goal back almost immediately with a header from a Boyle cross

Into the second half and HIBS drew level with a goal of real quality Dylan McGeouch slotting home after a superb one two with Holt but sadly for HIBS he had to limp off after celebrating his counter too much

As so often happens in Cup ties one stroke of luck turned the game Aberdeen’s way Hayes did well to make space for a shot from long range and the ball appeared to pose no threat to Marcianos goal until it took an unfortunate wicked deflection off MacGregors leg and trundled into the net

Hibs had one last throw of the dice as they tried to hang on to the cup Rocky came up for a stoppage time corner and headed towards goal but his counterpart Joe Lewis held onto the ball to ensure Aberdeen progressed to the final

Hibernian moved to within one point of second top The Rangers with this victory over Livingston

Scott Robertson guided in an early opener Myles Hippolyte levelled with a superb volley past Mark Oxley and Jason Cummings restored HIBS lead forcing the ball home at the second attempt following a scramble in the box

Just before half time Cole of Livvy saw red after picking up a second yellow

Things were looking ominous for Livvy when HIBS were awarded a penalty kick into the second half but goalkeeper Jamieson saved McGeouchs effort

Hibs were not to be denied for too long however and in the 82nd minute substitute Dominic Malonga in typical fashion latched onto Fraser Fyvies long ball to dribble his way through the Livvy defence to make it 3-1

    Scottish League SPL 22/4/2006

    Hibernian 2 v 1 Hearts

    Riordan
    Benji

Abdessalam Benjelloun came off the bench to score the winner for Hibernian as they dented Hearts hopes of Champions League qualification

Following a typically frantic start it was the home side who took the lead after 14 minutes Jay Shields robbed Paul Hartley in midfield and fed Sproule on the right The Irishman drove his cross to the back post where Derek Riordan took a touch before brilliantly rifling his right footed shot past Craig Gordon into the far corner of the net

HIBS held onto their lead until a few seconds before half time Bednar chased a speculative long ball into the box which was being shepherded by Gary Caldwell back to Zibi Malkowski however the ball slipped from the goalkeepers grasp allowing Bednar the easiest of chances to roll the ball into the empty net

This goal seemed to galvanise Hearts at the start of the second half with Bednar twice hitting the ball just wide of the post and Aguiar and Tall also going close to giving Hearts the lead

This inspired HIBS Manager Tony Mowbray to change things and introduced Scott Brown Paul Dalglish and Benji to the proceedings the latter two combining to allow the Moroccan to fire home the winner from 16 yards on the 78th minute

Benji was so delighted at scoring his first goal for the club that even though it came at the Famous Five end he insisted in celebrating it in front of the South Stand which housed the baying Jambo hordes despite being held back by a somewhat relieved Zibi and getting booked for his trouble

Hibs Zibi Whittaker Murphy Hogg Caldwell Shields Glass Konde Sproule Fletcher and Riordan

I agree with you about the quality of the video. It's a whole lot better than some of the other stuff I've seen from 30-40 years ago.

    Hibernian 2 v 2 Hearts

    OConnor
    Riordan

A late goal from defender Andy Webster earned Hearts a share of the spoils in an entertaining Edinburgh derby

Hibs went in front early when striker Garry OConnor swept home a low Scott Brown cross from close range But Hearts hit back with Lee Miller crashing in a powerful strike after good work from Mark Burchill Hibs regained the lead in the second half when Derek Riordan thundered in a wonderful shot but Webster nodded the ball in to equalise on 88 minutes

The home side stay third in the table but Aberdeen who won at Motherwell have closed the gap to two points in the race for a UEFA Cup place Hearts remain eight points behind their city rivals and will find it hard to make up ground in the four remaining games

HIBS looked eager to make amends after last weeks surprise loss to Livingston and started the game in positive fashion Hearts were pinned back and found themselves trailing after just eight minutes A Riordan corner was cleared as far as Scott Brown on the edge of the penalty area and the midfielder quickly slipped the ball back between Hearts defenders allowing OConnor to slide in and force the ball into the net

The visitors came close to an equaliser soon after when Burchill headed a Paul Hartley freekick against the base of the post but Miller had the ball in the net on 23 minutes after a neat flick from Burchill was met by the striker and lashed high into the net from a tight angle Webster almost put his side in front a minute later but his header was well saved by Simon Brown HIBS appeared stunned by the Hearts comeback and completely lost their way giving the ball away cheaply and losing out in every midfield challenge

Tony Mowbrays side survived a sticky spell and thought they had regained the lead three minutes before halftime when Gary Caldwell rose to meet a Derek Riordan corner The Scotland defenders header was thumped clear by a Hearts player with the home team protesting that the ball had crossed the line

Striker Amadou Konte making his first start for HIBS did well to create space for a shot early in the second half but his poked effort was tipped wide by Gordon From the resulting corner Konte diverted in a Dean Shiels shot but the linesman’s flag cut short the home fans celebrations Gordon then had to make another great save to stop Riordans powerful shot across goal However the Scotland keeper had no answer to Riordans next effort The young forward cut in from the left flank after 63 minutes and thundered the ball inside the far post from the edge of the penalty area Riordan created an almost identical chance minutes later but this time Gordon was able to stop the shot

HIBS had a lucky escape when keeper Brown put the ball down without noticing Miller behind him The Hearts forward nipped in to steal the ball and Brown appeared to impede his opponent who had embarrassed him however Mike McCurry did not see any infringement and the ball was cleared

Hibs were punished for not making the most of their second half chances when a Hartley free kick was forced home by Webster on 88 minutes

Hibs just had four League games remaining before the squad could sit back and enjoy the 1966 World Cup the first of these games was away to St Johnstone at Muirton Park with Bob Shankly looking for his troops to do the double over the Perth saints That feat was duly achieved when goals from Stein Scott and Stevenson earned a 3-1 victory a Richmond penalty giving the saints their goal in the first minute of the game

The highlight of the game however was the performance of young Colin Stein who not only scored one but laid on the other two Shankly described Jim Scott’s goal after brilliant lead up play by Stein as one of the best he had ever witnessed
