I think Eddie was pretty insistent on it being his way or else but as he would be carrying the can that’s understandable.Managing players who were developing during the more relaxed ‘60s would be difficult. He was a great player and coach and at his peak was terrific at the most important part of the job-putting the right team on the park.
Joe was so popular because as teenagers we had been used to watching players in their late twenties and early thirties-almost pensioners when you’re fifteen. Suddenly here was one of us terrifying defences all over Scotland. He was fast, brave and good looking-how could he fail.Great days.
Eric Stevenson said in his book that Eddie Turnbull was used to being top dog as a player and he wanted to be top dog as a Manager and that he resented Joe Baker and Pat Stanton being idolised by the fans

Strange behaviour really if true you would think he would be happy to take a back seat as he was Head Honcho anyway

It was definitely his way or the highway

You don’t hear any player bad mouthing his abilities as a Coach it is just his man management that is called into question perhaps that was the difference between him and Jock Stein?

Him and Stein could be described as polar opposites. Stein - maybe the best man manager ever, not too hot on tactics. Turnbull was at the cutting edge tactically through the 60's and 70's, but was horrible to his players. No coincidence that Stein appointed Eddie as his assistant when he got the Scotland job, he wanted his tactical nous.

Eddie chilled out when he got over his illnesses and had his knees fixed in later life. Used to see him regularly around Stockbridge and he was always affable and keen to chat about the Hibees. Still foul mouthed though, but humourous with it.

Spot on & Eddie loathed Stein. You're also correct about Eddie being more affable in later life. He was guest of honour at one of our London Hibs gatherings & we regularly met up with him at ER after that. A story I've told before sums Ned up. We took him to a Spurs game, & met Bill Nicholson, the legendary double winning manager, in the Legends lounge. Eddie was introduced to the members & Tommy Harmer, ex Spurs from 50's came over & said hello. He said, " I remember playing against you Jocks, you weren't a bad side". 'Not bad'? said Ned, we f****d you 5-2!! A Ned classic!

Tony Mowbray had left the building and Mark Proctor took his troops over the bridge for this Monday night fixture HIBS threatened to run riot but Dorus De Vries in the Pars goal kept the Hibees out performing heroics

HIBS broke his resistance on 44 minutes when Ivan Sproule accepted Chris Killen’s pass to lob the goalkeeper and settle the fans’ nerves going into the second half

Sproule returned the compliment on 62 minutes when he set up Chris Killen after a trademark mazy run Michael Stewart then drilled a shot off the crossbar before substitute Benji confirmed the points when he fired home a pass from fellow country man Zemmama. Chris Killen then rose to head home a Zemmama corner to complete a miserable night for Dunfermline

One of the great European nights at Easter Road- HIBS actually led 2-1 - and probably the first time my green tinted eyes actually noticed an opposition player JOSE ALTAFINI- what a player!

Claudio Gentile opened the scoring just before half time

Stanton a header from a Brownlie cross and Cropley - a tap in when a lob on goal was headed onto the underside of his own crossbar by a Juve defender- gave HIBS the lead then the Italians brought on the ageing grey haired 36 year old striker.

Lightning quick HIBS could not cope he scored one made one for Cuccureddu and added a second

Alan Gordon once told me that when the ball was up the other end of the park Gentile would pull the wee hairs out of the back of his legs and do other illegal things to wind him up

It was John Blackley with the V sign. Was at game and 10 mins after it was abandoned the fog lifted. I have been at Easter Road a game against Motherwell where the referee played more than 10 mins in fog which was much worse than the fog at Parkhead that day. My father who was a referee was disgusted at the way Davidson handled the situation and also the way the Scottish League handled it.
I worked with Stuart Rennie the Well keeper. He remembers the game because noone told him the game was abandoned. He was on his own on the pitch thinking we must be doing some attacking at that end. . They didn't even miss him in the dressing room.

A goal came for HIBS when Lawrie Reilly was through on goal and got pulled down in the box. He picked himself up placed the ball on the spot and shaped as though he was about to take the kick when Eddie Turnbull ran forward and hammered a thunderbolt past the stunned keeper

Archie Buchanan then hammered a daisy cutter through a mass of legs in the box to double HIBS’ lead

Gordon Smith added two more after the break the first when he was set up by a good move involving Johnstone and Reilly The second when he picked up the ball just inside his own half dribbled past Baird and Haddock and drilled a low shot past Wilson from the tightest of angles

    25/10/2003 Scottish League Premier Division

    Hbernian 3 v 1 Kilmarnock

    Murdock
    Riordan
    O’Connor

Bobby Williamson eased the pressure on his position at HIBS with this win over his old club

Tam McManus was given a rare start and he was looking hungry and dangerous from the off out on the right wing. His 13th minute corner was met by Garry O’Connor and after the striker’s initial shot was blocked Colin Murdock was on hand to stab the ball into the net to score his first goal for the club

HIBS doubled their lead three minutes later when Derek Riordan picked up a threaded pass from Stephen Glass inside the Killie box spun round the challenge of Freddie Dindeleux and poked the ball through the legs of Francois Dubourdeau from six yards out

Kilmarnock pushed forward to try and get back into the match with Fowler and Boyd going close but Daniel Andersson in the HIBS goal managed to repel everything Killie could throw at him

Substitute Colin Nish managed to pull one back for Kilmarnock on the 80th minute and as they piled forward searching for an equaliser Garry O’Connor slipped the ball under Dubourdeau after a swift counterattack in the 90th minute

A Managerless and struggling near the foot of the table Aberdeen arrived at Easter Road looking for a change in fortune for their undoubtedly talented squad

The fates were against them however as HIBS led at half time thanks to a Drew Jarvie own goal.

Davie Robb equalised just after the interval but further goals from Des Bremner and substitute Bobby Smith sealed the points for the Hibees

    Cropley 12
    O’Rourke 14,52,61
    Brownlie 55
    Duncan 57,64

Magical HIBS booked their place in the quarterfinals of the European Cup Winners Cup in magnificent style

Once again Turnbull’s Tornadoes hammered out a warning to all of Europe with a fantastic seven goal rout of Albanian Cup holders FC Besa

Eddie Turnbull had forecast a green and white blitzkreig and once again he was bang on

HIBS teased and tormented and finally tore the heart out of a plucky but completely outclassed Besa side No praise can be too great for this HIBS side as they took all the strain out of a potentially tricky away leg with seven magnificent goals

It was almost an exact repeat of the humiliation of Sporting Lisbon with an extra goal thrown in for good measure

Right from the opening whistle HIBS attacked FC Besa The Albanian goal surviving many narrow escapes before HIBS finally broke their resistance in 11 minutes Alan Gordon crashed a left foot shot which beat Besa keeper Arkaxhiu but hit the crossbar Alex Cropley however was alert to any slip ups and was right on the spot to head home

The HIBS fans went wild and Besa crumpled 90 seconds later when Jimmy O’Rourke grabbed a second from close range when he gratefully accepted an Alan Gordon headed knockdown to fire home

Into the second half and going down the slope HIBS hit them with five goals in 12 wonderful minutes

The Albanians had no answer to the pace power and precision passing of this wonderful HIBS side

The first came when Cropley raced on to a through ball from Stanton he beat two defenders before cutting the ball back for O’Rourke to slam home

Two minutes later Edwards sent Brownlie clear on the right The full back raced deep into the Besa penalty area and slammed HIBS four ahead

Four minutes later HIBS had their place in the quarterfinals assured when Arthur Duncan moved inside tricked his way past two defenders and hammered in a great left foot shot

In the 62nd minute O’Rourke bundled his way through the middle to grab his hat-trick and HIBS’ sixth goal

Three minutes later Duncan scored the best goal of the night when he accepted a Gordon pass and fired home a raging left foot shot from all of 25 yards

Besa who were sporting throughout got a late consolation when Kariqi scored on 67 minutes

New signing Jim McArthur watched this game from the Stand I am sure that he would have been impressed by the performance of his new teammates

Drew Jarvie seemed to score every time he played against us so it makes a change to see it was an o.g.

    27/10/1991 Skol League Cup Final

    Hibernian 2 v 0 Dunfermline

    McIntyre pen
    Wright

After a dull nervous first half in which HIBS’ only chance was when Ray Sharp passed the ball back to goalkeeper Andy Rhodes leaving his goalkeeper one on one with HIBS striker Keith Wright - fortunately for Sharp Rhodes managed to fall on the ball at the feet of the striker-the first half ended all square

Knowing his side had to score first if only to calm the growing nerves amongst the Hibee legions on the terraces and in the pubs and clubs Manager Alex Miller simply calmly reminded his players that they were better than the Pars man for man and as a team and all that they had to do was just relax and take control of the game and their reward would come

HIBS kicked off for the second half shooting towards their own fans and were like a team revitalised HIBS immediately won a corner which ended with Gareth Evans shooting narrowly over the crossbar
In 48 minutes the breakthrough came Michael Weir played a neat one two with Wright and burst into the box only to be fouled by the hapless Sharp who grabbed at Weir’s waist but was unable to bring the HIBS man down That was enough to make Weir mis-kick and topple over and three quarters of the Stadium shouted ‘penalty ‘and Referee Brian McGinlay had no hesitation in pointing to the spot

Tommy McIntyre the coolest man in Hampden stepped up and sent Dunfermline’s ace penalty stopper Andy Rhodes the wrong way from the penalty spot

It was all one way traffic after that but the fans sensed that HIBS really needed to finish Dunfermline off Billy Davies having their first shot on target in the 75th minute

Five minutes from the end Weir and Evans dispossessed Cunnington before Weir played a lovely one touch through ball to Wright who went hurtling through on goal leaving Norrie McCathie and Davie Moyes in his wake before calmly placing the ball beyond the advancing Rhodes

The fans knew it was all over but Brian Hamilton still had time to rattle a post with a 25 yard thunderbolt and Pat McGinlay fired a Graham Mitchell cross just wide

    27/10/1985 Scottish League Cup Final

    Hibernian 0 v 3 Aberdeen

After knocking out both Celtic and Rangers HIBS were really up against it against Alex Ferguson’s all conquering Aberdeen without Captain Gordon Rae

Stevie Cowan brought out an early save from Jim Leighton but after that it was all Aberdeen John Hewitt for Aberdeen sent over the perfect cross for Eric Black to open the scoring after 9 minutes three minutes later he was at it again when he provided another perfect cross for Billy Stark to head the second

HIBS did try to get back into the game but the Dons defence was brilliantly marshalled by Willie Miller

When Eric Black got his second and the Dons’ third the Cup dream was over for another year

Paul Kane did test Jim Leighton late on with a 25 yarder but it was too little too late
