    Robbie Rensenbrink passes away

Tonight at age 50 I suddenly feel more than a bit old as I read that Dutch footballer Robbie Rensenbrink has passed away.

I have quite a lot of football memories before this, but the 1978 World Cup in Argentina was my first experience of live football on nearly every day for a month or so.

Probably more vivid because of course we played Holland (as I am sure they were referred to then) in THAT game, where Robbie scored, and they were of course the eventual runners up.

    Rest in peace Robbie.

I was going to say ...

No way he could be 50. He played in the 1974 World Cup.

    Then I read the OP again. It's the poster who's 50. Do'h!

One of the familiar names from that era.
Netzer, Neeskens, Breitner, Kempes, Gentile, Zoff. Great times for football.

Double Doh, yeah, I thought the same, was thinking he must have been 8 when he played in world cup 78.
Like the whole Dutch team of that era his name is etched in my brain, felt so sad when they lost 74 final and 78 was no better, loved that team

Must be that I phrased the original post badly, I’m 50, made me feel old last night when I heard the news.

Arie Haan as well. Not as well known but scored two screamers, one against Zoff, seemed to shoot from anywhere but the car park.

Sad to hear about RR that team was great to watch.

    Arie Haan.

    Scored some absolute screamers.

In those days with limited TV coverage it was the Dutch and Brazilians who lit up the television screens with dipping forty-yarders or Exocets that ripped the netting from the stanchion
There's only one thing better than a Hibs calendar and that's two Hibs calendars

How Holland managed to avoid winning the World-cup in the 70's is one of life's greatest mysteries ........ and tragedies !. They were an absolute joy to watch - and Cruyff was just out of this world !

One of the unsung heroes but a vital part of that Holland team in the 70s.
    RIP Robbie.

When fitba was fitba, no gonna see games and teams like that anymore.
Each team (almost) had so many great talents they were a joy to watch. With Holland more than most.

Magical times as a boy, that Holland side meant everyone wanted to be them in the backies. Made the first batch of sticker collecting an absolute joy too with their brilliant names. R.I.P. Robbie.

Its long forgotten now but in the World Cup Final of 1978 with the score at 1:1 and the game in second half injury time Robbie Rensenbrink hit the post.

An inch from sporting immortality for still a supremely talented player.

Argentina won in extra time 3:1.

Over confidence, and a chip on their shoulder about the war are two reasons given for 1974.

Having scored early, they proceeded to take the pee out of West Germany. This lack of professionalism came back to bite them on the backside, as it eound up the Germans.

Simon Kuyper put this down to the fact that they wanted revenge for the invasion of Holland. He went further and said that when Germany equaliser, it totally deflated them and old inferiority complex came back to haunt them.

They were a superb team, and in their defence it appears there was a lot of dirty tricks leading up to the final. One was to put a rumour out that Cruyff was having an affair. His wife's arrival on the eve of the game must have been unsettling, to say the least.
