    Even 'One Step Beyond'?

    Surely not.

    😫
That was on Stiff. Madness only two tone track was The Prince.

Allied to an all white line up, and Suggs being a Chelsea supporter, meant they attracted the wrong type of people early on.

The Prince was clearly a tribute to Prince Buster and black culture as was much of the debut LP and pretty much all their output. They attracted the wrong type of people long into their career including Hibs casuals at a punch up at Ingleston..
No fault of the band. Suggs is an absolute toff and speaks long and hard still of where their influences came from.

I was punk but embraced all of it including the fancy mods and their hush puppies. Loved 2tone and the Oi! / skin stuff that came on the back of it, most of it well meaning, some of it misunderstood but a lot of it dodgy to say the least. Still have a punk brain (ergo mouth) if not the lifestyle, and it doesn’t half get me into trouble 40 odd years on.
Early punk gigs played a lot of Jamaican Ska in between the bands as there were plenty records to chose from but not so many punk ones. The Ruts classic, Staring at the Rude Boys sums it up.

Staring at the Rude Boys is late in that respect NH.
By the time that appeared there were 20 punk 45s a week and the Ruts had a few out.
Don Letts is the man to look up, Clash videographer and Roxy club DJ in 76/77 playing dub and reggae as there certainly weren’t many punk records around. He’s also immortalised on the cover of the Black Market Clash LP with his punky dread attitude.
No doubt The Ruts picked up on the influence and had their first 45 (In A Rut) as a double A side with reggae band Misty In Roots on the People Unite label. The Ruts were fabulous and took protest and embrace to another level in their writing and performance. R.I.P. Malcolm Owen.

It was bewildering at the time, as One Step Beyond, and the song "Madness" were also by the Prince. This wasn't long after Jimmy Pursey had been driven to a breakdown by Sham 69 gigs being infiltrated by the ultra right.

Crazy times, when you consider the main reason The Jam couldn't play Belfast was because of using Union Jacks as part of their image.

True. And prior to that The Clash had taken photo opportunities in Belfast (inspiring the Complete Control b-side ‘ City of the Dead’ and got rioted out of a gig. Heavy manners indeed. Crazy times but I’d swap the scenes for now!
Throw Skrewdriver, 4-skins, Last Resort and the Oi! Stuff into the mix a couple of years on with agitators like Crass, The Upstarts and the aforementioned Ruts and you have Southall, Brixton and Toxteth. I’d like to see Boris deal with that lot

I remember that. It was bowfing We played against them in a round robin type thing at ER, iirc.

Easter Rd and Tynie. Skol cup. Watching Hertz v Man City whilst waiting on Hibs v Coventry in the decider was bloody turgid stuff.

I also remember Joe Corrigan giving Colin Campbell a dull one in the Hibs v City game at Tynie.

I was at the one at Easter Road. I don’t recall much entertainment. A few folk dozed off in the sun lying on the grassed area at the top of the terracing.

The opener was at ER too, Hibs v Hearts. Beat them, then Tynie through the week v City and then ER again. It would be pretty enthralling if we tried it now!

Can you see a song like "Stand Down Boris" ever making it into the charts? (Younger readers should Google the whole concept of pop charts.)

Coventry City's 'Brown-strip' for that 1970's 'Skol Cup' - quite rightly imho, described as 'the worst strip ever' !!

The 2 things I remember about that tournament was the blazing sun, it was beautiful - AND that truly awful strip - it was minging !

The pink had one of the most minging headlines ever, as well.

    "Colin is Hibs Goal Skolar"

They fairly milked the fact that he had just graduated from university.

That derby was my first match. I remember getting pretty bored during the Coventry v Man City game immediately afterward.

I only attended the midweek game at Tynecastle but none of the ER games.

I was only a kid, so had to go to whatever matches I was taken to by an adult. My Grandad, who took me to the game, was a Jambo so Tynecastle it was.

My first ever match was also a derby, the SC Qtr Final at ER earlier in the year (Hibs won 2-1).

We should bring out a double-denim kit in tribute to the Proclaimers “Sunshine on Leith” LP cover.

Didn't one of the international sides play in a faux-denim strip?

Got me thinking of old retro tops and ended up buying a Jorge Campos Mexican top on ebay - handy for 5's!
