    Mistakes in song lyrics

Now from the song ironic when nothing in it is actually ironic except that maybe it appears the singer doesn't know what it means.

I would be interested in your opinions on the song "perfect" by Eddie Reader particularly the chorus. We have been arguing for years over this with mates so I would be interested in thoughts on here:

    (It's got to be perfect
It's got to be worth it, yea
Too many people take second best,
But I won't take anything less,
    It's got to be perfect.)

Person A says: "Too many people take second best" she then replies to that in next line saying "but I wont take anything less" as an answer therefore she would take 2nd best. She then says its got to be perfect without making any differential between perfect and 2nd best.

Person B says: Nothing wrong with any of it.

    Thoughts

‘Too many people take second best
Well I won’t take anything less’

No sure if that helps your argument but just had a wee listen and it’s definitely the word ‘well’ as opposed to ‘but’.
And now it’s in ma heid... thanks awfully! 😁

It's poor grammar, and it's irritated me for years, but she means she won't take anything less than perfect.

In fact she goes on to say so again.

Artistic license, I think it's called.

    And it's "But" not "Well".

I've always thought it was "but" so that video intrigued me, but they're definitely mistaken.

I've just played it on Spotify and used Shazam and then SoundHound, to identify it. As well as telling you the song title and artist, they both give you the lyrics too and both list it as "but".

You'd be lucky if you could find a single lyrics site which would have it listed as "well".

Anyway, it doesn't matter. It still makes enough sense.

My first and only thought is that Person A may be making the same mistake as saying 'a packet of biscuits are waiting for you in the kitchen'.
Not all words refer to the thing immediately preceding them!

Picture yourself on a boat on a river, with tangerine trees and marmalade skies. Is Person A jumping up and down because rivers don't have skies? No, because it's the picture that has the marmalade skies, not the river.

The song, Perfect, is by Fairground Attraction, Eddi Reader never released it herself. #pedantic
There is no such thing as too much yarn, just not enough time.

I’ll out myself as a sad pedant aswell. One that seems like a mistake to me is on Oasis’s “Hey Now”. The verse goes....

    The first thing I saw
As I walked through the door
Was a sign on the wall that read
It said you might never know
That I want you to know
What is written inside of your head

This suggests that the sign on the wall reads “It said you might never know...”

The “It said” just duplicates “that read”! Not sure how Noel signed off on this, although granted the lyrics are kinda nonsense anyway. Glad I got that off my chest!

Just to join in with the pedantry, there are a few valid examples of irony in the song "Ironic".

I assume he means there were few, if any, examples of irony in the song.

Which, I assume, is what F17 was alluding to.

i.e. It's ironic that there are so few examples of irony in the song "Ironic".

He said there “were a few” the pedant in me says it should have read “were few”?

    That’s ironic eh?

I think my brain just exploded.

I should have quoted the OP in my initial post as they said, as I've seen said a few times by various folk over the years, that the lyrics of "Ironic" don't describe any ironic situations. The pedant in me disagrees.

In 'If I can't' by 50 cent, he says

"you'll get hit, and homicide will be asking what happened".

However, given that homicide deal with murder, if someone was to hit and homicide were to be involved, the individual in question would presumably be dead and therefore not worth asking what happened.

I don't have time to look at all the lyrics just now, but if you were to go looking for a knife and instead found 10,000 spoons, that would be ironic.

I wouldn't have counted them. As soon as I saw all those spoons, I would have exclaimed, "Oh man, there's millions of spoons!"
