    The Hibernian FC Squad 2019/2020

As more signing news approaches, thoughts turn to the composition of the squad for 2019/20

Neil Lennon ran a first team squad of 24 last season and I believe that 24 is again the aim for Paul Heckingbottom this season.

Currently contracted for next season are

    Goalkeepers: 2

    1. Marciano
    2. Maxwell

    Defenders: 9

    3. Stevenson
    4. Gray
    5. Hanlon
    6. McGregor
    7. Jackson
    8. Porteous
    9. Whittaker
    10. Mackie
    11. James

    Midfielders: 10

    12. Allan
    13. Slivka
    14. Newell
    15. Horgan
    16. F. Murray
    17. Mallan
    18. Boyle
    19. Vela
    20. Middleton
    21. Hallburg

    Forwards: 3

    22. Kamberi
    23. Shaw
    24. Doidge

Therefore the squad is now full.

I'm not aware of the likes of Campbell, Innes Murray, Gullan etc being promoted to the first team this summer so without further departures, I expect 5 signings this summer, most likely James, Doidge, Omeonga, Gravenbirch and McNulty.

Who do you want in the door first?

    15. F. Murray
    16. Mallan
    17. Boyle

    Forwards: 2

    18. Kamberi
    19. Shaw

    Therefore squad places

5 more bodies would be some turnaround and a busy window. There is always a possibility that we move on a couple of players?

Id be happy with all the above singing in any order 😁

Once those 5 are confirmed i will be happy.

Is McNulty a possible still? Thought we'd been priced out

Given that we heard a lot of talk about the squad being stretched last season and how much injuries impacted us, I wouldn't be surprised to see us try to increase the total number slightly.

Seriously though I’d be happy if we get the five named by the OP with Doidge being first.

Need a goal scorer in early

Doidge and James look like there’s a good chance of them so I’ll count they two.

I’d fancy we need another more senior GK? Unless they feel Dabrowski is ready.

I’d like to see Omeonga back and I’d like us to go for Shankland considering he’s free.

I’d also like to see Shaw go out on loan to be replaced by McNulty and I reckon we need a big geezer to sit in front of the back 4. Basically a new version of the Bartley that we signed 4 years ago. A more box to box midfielder coming in with Slivka going out would be my choice aswell.

So I’d like 8 in, 1 out permanently and 1 out on loan from that list. Big ask, and I’d probably settle for the 5 in if it was 2 strikers (Doidge being one), the boy from Yeovil, a box to box midfielder and a holding midfielder.

Personally I would ditch it. I think he was a decent-ish player but I don't particularly want us to spend a stupid amount of time negotiating for maybe an expensive deal by our standards. Could find plenty strikers of similar or better standard elsewhere imo.

Would happily take that although I’ve got a feeling we will go for a GK unless PH has full confidence that young Dabrowski can step in when required.

Defence will be sorted once the James deal is concluded.

    Midfield definitely needs a DM.

Would personally like to see Shaw go out on loan to a club where he will get regular 1st team football. Playing regularly for his development is surely better than warming the bench if we do indeed sigh both Doidge & McNulty whilst also keeping ahold of Kamberi.

What is Heckingbottom wanting 24 players based on? Has he said something?

Usually a 1st team squad is around 23/24 players

I think I remember him saying he wanted 2 players for each position with development players supplementing the team. Off course I could be making this up.

Not sure what happens with a player who can play a number of positions?

The system started when Stubbs took over.

    For each position

    A senior pro
    An ready made younger replacement
An up and coming youth player

It is the ideal but there will of course be players that provide cover for various positions

The addition of Doidge leaves 4 squad places up for grabs.

  20. #19
    3 players left ?

Though I think some will leave ?

    Flo
    Rocky

Hopefully not but McNulty and Omeonga would be great signings to have back as know the club and manager plus fans love both.

Formation I think will be 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1

No idea who slots into where in these formations though

I am concerned we are light in central midfield, and I keep forgetting about Slivka, which tells its own story.

Can Hecky coach him into playing some kind of deep lying role?

Will definitely be interesting to see. Hopefully the new signings and any further new additions hit the ground running. Also both Boyle & Porteous recapture their good form before those nasty injuries they picked up. I’ve gone with the following 4-3-3 as that is the formation we played last season but then again, Heckinbottom may change that up a bit.

    Marciano

    Gray
    Porteous
    Hanlon
    Stevenson

    Mallan
Jackson (I’m sure he played a few games as a DM for Barnsley when Heckinbottom was in charge)
Allan (play just off the striker)

    Boyle
Kamberi (having Allan back will be great as the both of them had a great partnership the last time they played together)
    Newell

    subs:

    Dabrowski
    James
    McGregor
    Slivka
    F.Murray
    Horgan
    Doidge

Right now I reckon we’re 3 non-attacking midfielders short. A couple box to box midfielders and a defensive midfielder would be top of my wish list. If we got that I reckon we’d be in very good shape. I’m the same with Slivka, if he stays then hopefully he’d be an addition to the pool rather than an integral part of it.

I’d suspect we’ll be 4-2-3-1 this season mostly. Not many managers play 4-4-2 anymore so if that’s the case we maybe only need 3 strikers with Boyle as a last resort.

Unlikely. He can't tackle. He is better suited to a central role at the top of the pitch.
I think he may move on before the window closes.

That’s how I see it from what we currently have.

    My ideal side would be:

    Rocky

    Gray
Any 2 of Daz/Porteous/Hanlon (know nothing of Jackson)
    Stevenson

New big ******* of a DM
Omeonga or someone equally as energetic and hard working

    Boyle
    Mallan
    Allan

    Flo/Doidge

Know nothing of Newell either and Horgan is a very good option aswell.

With 4 central defenders already I doubt it. Porteous hasn't even secured his place and he's far ahead of anyone else from youth side.
