The greatest song not to get to number one

Currently listening to Vienna and it got me thinking. What other classic songs didn’t make it to the top of the charts.

    United we stand here....

"Vienna" - Ultravox (held off by "Shuddap You Face" by Joe Dolce, much to Midge Ure's understandable chagrin).

Good call. A double classic held off the no. 1 spot by a third rate pub song.
(A bigger act of injustice than the Shuddup You Face one.)

Stevie Wonder, Yester-me Yester-you Yesterday. A classic stuck at number two, and if my memory is right the number one was "Two little boys" by some paedo

Last Christmas surely worth a shout here. Albeit the Wham juggernaut was halted at no2 because of Band Aid and they featured on that as well.

Now I've had time to think - the one the band that most deserved a top spot but never achieved it - The Who and their no 2 - I can see for miles.

God Save the Queen by the Sex Pistols only made number 2 in the official charts. Fix.
    Every gimmick hungry yob,
Digging gold from rock and roll
Grabs the mic to tell us,
    He'll die before he's sold.

Wind of Change - The Scorpions. Great song, got to number 2 in the UK charts, one of the most significantly political songs of the early nineties, celebrating Glasnost, end of the Cold War, fall of the Berlin Wall and the hope for future peace in Europe.

Quite a few Bowie songs never made it to no. 1. Life on Mars, Suffragette City, Changes,...
