The first tray that will form part of our ground-breaking retractable pitch has been delivered to the new stadium site.

This world-first design at our fantastic new home will see the playing surface split into three sections.

Each section - weighing more than 3,000 tonnes each - will be made up of 33 trays, making 99 in total.

The first of the three pitch-long sections to be completed will be the west section, followed by the east and finally the central section.

The trays for the west section are now being delivered in batches over the next fortnight.

OUR RETRACTABLE PITCH EXPLAINED...

Our new stadium will house a grass pitch sitting directly above an artificial surface - the first stadium of its kind in the UK to have two pitches inside the same bowl in order to create a truly world-class multi-use venue.

The fully retractable grass surface will be used for football matches whilst the artificial pitch underneath will be used for NFL matches, music concerts and a range of other events, in order to protect the integrity of both playing surfaces.

Sheffield engineering specialist SCX have designed, engineered, built and will install the innovative real turf football pitch, which will sit in three pitch-long steel sections, weighing more than 3,000 tonnes each. The surface will retract under the South Stand to reveal the artificial playing surface underneath.



Once the grass pitch is returned, the joins are invisible and undetectable allowing for a Premier League quality playing surface every matchday.

The retractable grass playing surface will take approximately 25 minutes to slide in or out of position before the remaining infrastructure can be incorporated for the relevant event.

The stadium looks amazing and you can see it for miles. Really stands out when you drive the North Circular but you can also see it from my neck of the woods.

I can generally take or leave modern stadiums but this looks well worth a visit.

Speaking to a Spurs Fan a few weeks ago and he said the long term plan is to turn that end into 'Safe Standing'.


That would be an incredible sight.

For some reason the progress of the building of the stadium has been showing on my Twitter feed for a while now. It looks like an unbelievable stadium. I can’t see how anyone can look at it and say it’s not the best in the country. The acid test will be how atmospheric it is in a game that will have so many football tourists in attendance. They seemed to have given atmosphere a lot of consideration when designing it though.

Was lucky enough to go to a few big games at WHL and atmosphere was brilliant - hopefully it translates.

I think they had an enormous waiting list, so hopefully there are plenty of proper fans in the ground.

The European games usually offered opportunties for tickets.

Hope they will again as I’m keen to go.

Only been to 1 match at Wembley (pain in the arse to get to and the food is ****).

Yeah funnily enough went to spurs v Aalborg in UEFA cup years ago as my first ever game - they went 2 down I think and came back to win 3-2, with a young Gareth bale playing as a very attacking left back! My second game was, bizarrely, Alex McLeish' first game in charge of Brum city. City went two or three up, spurs got it back to 3-3 only for Seb larsson to score a worldy in the last minute to give Birmingham a 4-3 win - needless to say with those two results, they reminded me of Hibs!

It's not definate that they will do this, they've just said it has been built so that they can convert it in an hour, if they want to.

Been following the stadiums progress from the early stages, coz I'm a bit of a train spotting nerd when it comes to football grounds

It looks absolutely mindblowing and has to be the best stadium in the UK and one of the best in Europe. They have done a great job of addressing the one thing that lets a lot of new stadiums down by ensuring that what its atmosphere will be like was one of the first things they considered … without a doubt criticism of the low rake of the stands and their distance from the pitch at the Emirates concentrated their minds.

£800,000,000 being spent by a single English club and our whole country cant find the money to transform our national stadium into one fit for the 21st century … mental

Build in association with the NFL. Not sure if the NFL helped provide some of the funding but that's why there is an artificial pitch. I'm sure I read that they wont need to shut off the first 5 rows or so like they have to at Wembley either because the pitch is lower for NFL and the stands are raised slightly from pitch level.
