    Western General history

    Looking for some help here.

My American-based cousin was born in the Western General in 1975. He's coming over soon, for the first time as an adult, and I'd like to show him where he was born.

None of the older members of the family can remember where the maternity unit was, and I haven't been able to find anybody at the WG who can help.

    So, your mission, Hibs.net.....etc etc.

Both my kids were born in WG in late 80’s, would it have been the same building in 1975?
It looked over towards the Beatson centre

    Possibly.

An older building, on the right of Porterfield Road as you go up from Crewe Road South?

We definitely went in the Alexander Donald building, up the stairs and along the corridor

I did my nurse training at the Western General from 1976-79 and had my son there in 1990 just before the maternity unit closed. Maternity was housed in the main hospital, entering at the clock tower on the first floor, towards the Crewe Rd South side over that time. The old building which has been replaced by the Anne Ferguson building was originally the nurses home.

    Thanks for this.

Any ideas what the maternity unit is now?

So was it the Clock Tower building I’m thinking of, not AD building
Our 2nd one was born within 10 mins of getting in, no wonder I wasn’t paying too much attention
I do remeber looking out a window, facing towards Comely bank cemetery

Thanks Crops for the thread, bringing many memories back!

On page 3, think it was in the Andrew Donaldson building, looking onto the grey area, south of the Infectious diseases unit

    Good stuff, Billy, thanks.

Will try and rattle my mum's memory banks with that.

If anything else comes to mind, give me a shout.

Thanks for all your help, folks. Hibs.net does it again.

I've just been in the WG, and maternity was indeed on the first floor of the clock tower building.

    Thanks again
