    Now I'm a union man
    Amazed at what I am
I say what I think, that the company stinks
    Yes I'm a union man

When we meet in the local hall
I'll be voting with them all
With a hell of a shout, it's "Out brothers, out!"
And the rise of the factory's fall

Oh, you don't get me, I'm part of the union
You don't get me, I'm part of the union
You don't get me, I'm part of the union
    Til the day I die
    Til the day I die

    Us union men are wise
To the lies of the company spies
And I don't get fooled by the factory rules
'Cause I always read between the lines

And I always get my way
If I strike for higher pay
When I show my card to the Scotland Yard
And this is what I say:

Oh, oh, you don't get me, I'm part of the union
You don't get me, I'm part of the union
You don't get me, I'm part of the union
    Til the day I die
    Til the day I die

    Before the union did appear
My life was half as clear
Now I've got the power to the working hour
And every other day of the year

So though I'm a working man
I can ruin the government's plan
And though I'm not hard, the sight of my card
Makes me some kind of superman

Oh, oh, oh, you don't get me, I'm part of the union
You don't get me, I'm part of the union
You don't get me, I'm part of the union
    Til the day I die
    Til the day I die

You don't get me, I'm part of the union
You don't get me, I'm part of the union
You don't get me, I'm part of the union
    Til the day I die
    Til the day I die

She’s got a smile that it seems to me, reminds me of childhood memories

silver horses, run down moonbeams, in her dark eyes

She told me come but I was already there

I’ve seen a million faces, and I’ve rocked them all

But I gotta get out, I gotta break out now, before the final crack of dawn

She was more like a beauty queen, from a movie scene

Rebel souls, deserters we are called

Like a fool, I fell in love with you, turned my whole world upside down

And as we wind in down the road, our shadows taller than our soul

is this the real life, is this just fantasy

we're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl

On the National Express there's a jolly hostess
    Selling crisps and tea
She'll provide you with drinks and theatrical winks
    For a sky-high fee
Mini-skirts were in style when she danced down the aisle
Back in '63 (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
But it's hard to get by when your arse is the size
    Of a small country

I may not always love you,so long as there are skies above you. You never need to doubt it ...

I see seas of green, red roses too

Well I'm not the world's most masculine man
    But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
    And so's Lola
    La-la-la-la Lola la-la-la-la Lola

I've always wondered about those lyrics.
Is Lola glad that 'she' (Lola) is a man or is Lola glad that the singer (Ray Davies) is a man? Or both?

If we are doing confusing lyrics then how about this mind bender from Billy Bragg.

“I was 21 years when I wrote this song,
    I’m 22 now but I won’t be for long”

If he wrote it at 21, why does it say he’s 22?

Those lyrics are from Paul Simon's "The Leaves That Are Green" are they not?

He's saying he wrote the song when he was at least a year younger - he's singing it right now while fast approaching his next birthday.
Well, that's how I read it.

From New England and the confusion is he's either a very slow writer or the song is unfinished.

If I had written a song last year when I was say, 21 years and 11 months old, and I had then stuck it in a drawer. Today, a year later (I'm now 22 and 11 months old), I take the song out the drawer and sing it to you and say "I was 21 years when I wrote this song. I'm 22 now but I won't be for long - because I'll soon be 23"
Can't see the confusion unless you're thinking he's taken 21 years to write the song?

Not originally - Bragg "borrowed" the lyrics from Simon's song as he was a great fan of S&G ...

"I was 21 years when I wrote this song
    I'm 22 now, but I won't be for long
    Time hurries on"

Kind of similar thing to (sorry, again) Pulp's 'something changed'.

"I wrote the song two hours before we met
I didn't know your name or what you looked like yet"

    Nice... but confusing

Spider Murphy played the tenor saxophone
Little Joe was blowing on the slide trombone
The drummer boy from Illinois went crash, boom, bang
The whole rhythm section was the Purple Gang

    Alone here in the kitchen
    I feel there's something missing
    I'd beg for some forgiveness
    But begging's not my business
And she won't write a letter
    Although I always tell her
    And so it's my assumption...

Just what is it that you want to do?
Well, we wanna be free, we wanna be free to do what we wanna do
And we wanna get loaded and we wanna have a good time
And that's what we're gonna do (away baby, let's go)
We're gonna have a good time, we're gonna have a party

Yeah, but you have changed your original song and are effectively writing a new one.

He is either 21 and has said he is 22 or he is 22 and said he is 21.

Anyway, probably not worth all this discussion and thanks for the info about S&G - I didn’t know that, just love New England as a song.

Where does it say I've changed the original?

Ach, no matter, you're right. It's not worth taking this any further.
