The council have recently underwent a program of signal re-controls. The green man phase has been set to come on, even if there has been no request.
The idea is to give pedestrians a priority, but if there nobody there to press the button,,,, do they need priority?
Isn’t that like the whole purpose of traffic lights in the first place? If a pedestrian wants to cross they press it which gives them priority to cross. But yeah that’s exactly my point, 4 times I had to drive that way yesterday, and 4 times I was sat waiting for nothing and no one.

This is so that people don't have to touch the button during the Covid-19 crisis. Other councils have been doing the same.

They’ve only just done it down my way if that’s the case, seems a bit late in the pandemic to do it.

Only one council worker made it to the Zoom training course. He's been awfully busy doing it on his own.

    Don't understand this.
"Traffic signals will also be re-calibrated to ensure an automatic pedestrian phase, meaning they will be set to turn red even if there’s no one waiting to cross."

If they're installing sensors which turn the lights red when someone is waiting to cross, why is there a need to turn the lights red when no one is waiting to cross? Is this just so that someone and no-one have equal rights? PC gone mad.

At the bottom of Clermiston Road on the corner near specialised signs there are a set of traffic lights, when the green arrow light appears but the top red light is still there it means you can go straight ahead but not turn left as the pedestrians have a green man and right to cross clermiston road. People beep their horn when you
don’t go and turn left as people go ahead on the green light, can they not understand traffic lights!
Raising this again, sitting at the same lights on Saturday, the green for go ahead is on but red for turning left. I am sitting at front of queue with left indicator on waiting for light to change, blue Mercedes behind me stationary then decides he will pull out, go round me and turn left through the red light! Just as he starts this manoeuvre the lights change to green, fortunately I realised what he was doing or we might have collided as I pulled of and he turned left from the outside lane. Think I’ll start to give these lights a miss and go straight ahead and turn left up Kaimes Road instead, probably safer.

The new style traffic lights that go green for the cyclists a few seconds before the green for cars. I’ve started to notice more and more drivers using the cyclists green as an excuse to get away quickly and make a right turn before the oncoming traffic gets going.

On another note no one will ever be bothered again by the alleged reckless driving of a yellow branded La Favorita Fiat 500 😁

Yes, I have already spotted a few of them for sale at Arnold Clark, they are all white when unwrapped.

People who park right on junctions of residential streets, not only do they narrow the junction but sometimes when turning right you can’t see anything coming unless your nose is more or less in the path of oncoming traffic. Especially vans as you can’t see through them as you can a car.

I was at a junction the other day which had double yellows to stop this... so to get round this, a van had simply parked on the pavement instead of the road.

Absolutely, I dropped off in the old school building half way up lochend road the other day. There was a van parked on both sides of the exit right on the corners. You’re basically using the force to get out and hoping no one hits you.

That’s brutal when folk do that. The other thing is when cars park opposite each other on a narrow street so you’ve got just the width of your car to get through the gap they’ve left.

You’re driving along and see a car ahead of you waiting to cross your line of traffic to turn right from a side road. There’s a massive gap between you and nothing coming from other direction so you are wondering why they haven’t gone as they have a clear view of a clear road both sides. They wait and wait and then when you are almost upon them they pull out!

In the days before cameras everywhere some people used to take great delight in knocking their mirrors off when squeezing through in their battered old vans.

Here in Berlin you often see the police, a tow truck and fire brigade driving around the side streets. If the fire engine has trouble getting through anywhere due to parked cars, they get towed and impounded. No ifs or buts, they're gone.

How do they decide which car gets towed?

Like say I park on one side then someone else comes along and parks opposite so the fire engine can't get through?

The roads are designed so that if the cars are correctly parked, then fire engines would have no trouble getting past, however some parking infringements would normally only warrant a ticket from a warden. I guess the fire engine is brought to enable the police to say without any doubt that the parking infringement was a hinderance for the fire brigade gaining access to any particular area. It also serves as a visual reminder to drivers/parkers that there is a real danger caused by irresponsible parking infringements.

Private car, then who knows, but in shared vehicles I can understand it.
The company I work for are encouraging personnel to use their own vehicles when there isn't enough company vehicles to abide with social distancing rules, they're also asking all employees in shared vehicles to use masks/gloves when driving and a full wipe down afterwards with anti-bac wipes.
