    Techno music thread

I was wondering if there was any old techno music fans amongst us. I spent a huge part of the 90s in clubs and all nighters like rezerection. If so give us some of your favourite tunes. I’ll start.

I’m not going to lie, I did quite like some of the cheesy stuff, but I also loved the real hardcore stuff and a bit of breakbeat as well.

Was it "Sublime" that they used to hold at Wilkie House?

I wasn't a regular, but some of the messiest, wildest, most brilliant nights of my life were in there. I only think I went a couple of times but if I'd gone much more then I probably wouldn't be here today.

(I also remember how bleak the few days afterwards could be, I shudder thinking about it).

Not sure if you would call it "techno" exactly but there were a few 90s "dance bands" that I saw around that time (95-98) who were outstanding live - Orbital used to be quite an experience, Lemonjelly at T in the Park were pretty good too.

Loved Orbital after being introduced to them by a good friend.

I know what you mean by definition - I always thought of them as a sort of 'intelligent techno'. What got me most was that they recorded fantastic studio albums but also put on outstanding live performances, where they would adapt their tracks to reflect they were playing in front of a crowd, almost like rock bands often do.

I saw them at the Cream Millennium party in Liverpool.

They mixed Chime into the bells at midnight, it was outstanding.

Studios were a dive but great fun. Some dodgy characters up to all sorts and don't think I ever saw fight. Compare that to George street and you wonder why e's aren't issued by bouncers in the way into every club😂

I was into it, preferred the detroit and the german stuff to the cheesy hardcore. The Trésor stuff from Berlin was absolutely fantastic. A lot of us were the same, drifted from house to techno to electro and then stopped listening to it completely when we got old and sensible and the big commercial clubs took over.

Tried to gain entry to Trésor nightclub in Berlin last summer and as expected knocked back at the door. Heard all the stories about the techno clubs in Berlin and their ultra strict door policy but we tried around 4 clubs and didn't get in a single one.

We were told to dress very minimalistic, keep calm in the queue and have some knowledge on who was playing that night but no luck. Anyone else experienced this in Berlin?

My mate was just there at new year. Said it is basically impossible to get in unless you are in a mixed group, ie no groups of lads. In terms of dress, he was wearing his kilt as he had been advised the opposite, dress in a way you stand out from the average crowd. Who knows what the rules are.

He was at Berghain, apparently do what you like, apart from take photographs😂😂

Been to both Watergate and Tresor, we were not in a mixed group and didn't have any issues with entry. We had a great night/early-morning in both, only place we got knocked back from was Weekend which was booked for a private event.

I never went to Tresor but went to some brilliant hardcore nights in Germany in about 94, amazing venues, no idea even what towns we went to! still very underground scene, a lot different to Pure, and the Germans all seemed to be better dressed and not as off their faces as the Scots My daughter is into dance music now, and she went to Tresor last year, which is the most 'make you feel old' thing its possible to conceive of. I gave her my old Tresor mix tape and she looked at it like it was a phonograph

I was going to start a similar thread, more of that in a minute. Pure and Wave were incredible nights to be at, (although a special mention should be made for the Sativa drummers). I was playing my 2 vinyl Pure albums at New Year. Picking a favourite band is almost impossible but Orbital are the only band that I can’t not go and see (If that makes sense). I was in Manchester to see them early December, it was incredible. You had to be there to believe the vibrations in the toilets. They are playing Brighton and Hull this year and I still need to organise time off work. Back on topic for a Pure classic.

I saw Lenny Dee a few times. The German stuff from that period really set the standard.
