In the 'Greenest club in Scotland' thread one poster stated that beavers are not fish. The thread was locked before I got the chance to comment so I'll do it here:

In the 17th century beavers were classified as fish by the Catholic Church so that their meat could be eaten on Fridays. So were capybaras.

Pirates wore eyepatches so that when they went below deck out of bright sunshine they could lift the eyepatch and have one eye already accustomed to darkness.

Same reason that cabin lights are dimmed at night and on bright during the day with window blinds open on an aircraft.

I always thought it was in case their ship was attacked in the night!

    ‘Thaaaaar ship’, not ‘their ship’

There's only one thing better than a Hibs calendar and that's two Hibs calendars

Few planes have different deck levels though!

Cabin lights are dimmed in an aircraft at dusk / night to allow you to see the emergency lights on the floor easier.

Window blinds are opened for landing to allow the cabin crew to see outside.

Both are basic emergency situation prep.

I think it's the other way round - if they were attacking ships in daylight they needed to be able to identify enemies as soon as they went down to darker, lower decks.

And that reminded me of another one. Pirates didn't necessarily talk like pirates until Robert Newton played Long John Silver in a 1950s film of Treasure Island. They came from all over the place and would have talked in many different accents.

That makes more sense as if it were night time anyway your other eye would have adjusted by then.

    Right you aaaarrrrrre.

Lights are dimmed at night to ensure passengers and crews eyes have adjusted to the light conditions outside should they have to evacuate. Blinds are opened for landing for the same reason and to allow the fire brigade to look inside the cabin in an emergency. Trust me on this

Well I suppose all the scenarios stated make make sense!

As for pirates I’m disappointed to hear they didn’t all speak English in a pirate accent...life ain’t gonna be the same now!

If you liked a tipple of a single malt during prohibition, you could legally obtain a bottle of Laphroaig. Due to its smell reminiscent of antiseptic it was mistakenly given a medicinal license, so you could go to your doctor and get him to prescribe you a bottle from the chemist.

The Eiffel Tower is painted 3 different shades of brown, changing from dark at the bottom to light brown at the top. This gives the impression that it's a uniform colour.

I've been too but in my head it's (wrongly) the same colour as the Forth Bridge.

The Hibs team in the 1958 cup final against Clyde didnt contain any players 6'0 or above in height.

There is no recorded case of someone who was born blind developing schizophrenia. However someone who loses their sight at a later stage in life is at a slightly increased risk of developing it.

De ja vu is information bypassing the short term memory to the long term making you think you've seen it before

When dying, life flashing before your eyes is meant to be the brains reaction to an unfamiliar situation trying to find solution to whether we've been in the predicament before
