The US railroads and Roman chariots is an entertaining tale but it's largely an urban myth. Like all the best myths there are some elements of truth in it and it's persisted for over a century.
Snopes had an excellent article explaining the facts and the fiction a few years back but I'm dammed if I can find it now.
