    Hibernian History Day 7

    Season 1881-82

    Owen Brannigan was encouraged to join Hibernians from a team named Anchor who had played their games in Holyrood Park. Brannigan was to have a sixty-five years association with the club.

    3rd September, Hibernians beat the Black Watch Highlanders, 22-1 in a friendly match, a club record that stands to this day.

    8th October, a new stand at Hibernian Park, Easter Road was opened; a crowd of 5,000 watched Hibernians beat St Bernards 2-1 in the second round of the Scottish Cup.

    December, Hibernians FC referred to as ‘Hibs’ for the first time in the Scotsman newspaper.

    Hibs team - Danny Browne, Malachy Byrne, James McKernan, Sandy Watson, James Waugh, Michael Whelahan, Patrick Cavenagh, Tommy Lee, Willie Donnelly, James “Tailor” Flynn, Owen Quinn, Willie Cox, Frank Rourke, Gillie Byrne, James McFadden, Pat Stanton

    25th February, after defeating Hearts 4-2, Kinleith 6-0, Hanover 6-1, West Calder 7-1, Hibs beat St Bernards 4-2 in front of 8000 spectators at the final of the Edinburgh Association Challenge Shield played at Tynecastle.

    April, Hibs returned to Lancaster on tour to replay the same opponents as the previous year, Hibs fared better, drawing against Blackburn Rovers and Blackburn Olympic and again beating Bolton Wanderers, this time 3-1.

    Also enjoying this . We seem to have played in a lot of different grounds in early years . I presume East of Scotland competition is what later became East of Scotland Shield ? Owen Brannigan`s 65 - year association with Hibernian is incredible .

    I know the most recent Pat was a descendent of Messrs Michael Whelahan but was this guy a relation of anyone too?
